Hi, I am thinking of upgrading my current GPU (the Gigabyte GTX 780Ti GHz Edition) to an RX Vega 56 or a GTX 1070. I have seen some benchmarks from Hardware Unboxed, the average across all of the games he tested at 1080p, was the same. My main monitor is an LG 2560x1080 monitor. Is it worth upgrading? My CPU is also the Intel Core i5 6600(non k).
Thanks from Jez :)
EDIT 1: I live in Australia, the prices are kinda high for the GPUs and the RX Vega 56 is not here yet only preorders.
EDIT 2: I have seen some prices of GPUs, I have found a RX Vega 64 for $30AUD cheaper than a GTX 1080, Is that a good option. Some GTX 1070's I'm looking at are the GALAX EX OC White, MSI Duke and the EVGA FTW2. What card would you go with?

Well the 1070 is a good upgrade and it will consume less power than your 780Ti.
I've got one with a 1440p G-Sync monitor and I'm pretty satisfied with it.

yes, if you find 1070 or vega 56 at ~ vega's MSRP

It's definitely worth upgrading that old card, but don't get Vega. Go for a 1070 or especially 1080 if you can, you won't regret it.

The problems with Vega are that it sounds like a hairdryer, chucks out lots of heat and consumes lots of power. And the framerate performance isn't all that either. Just stay away from this lemon. I'll probably get flamed by others for saying this, but it's the truth. Just check out the reviews on TPU and other sites to see what I mean.

And that noise: even the relatively noisy Founders Edition NVIDIA card doesn't put out anywhere near that level of noise. Save your sanity.

Thanks, I'll see what other ppl say :)

My CPU is too weak for a GTX 1080 xd

If you have sufficient case airflow (2x intake + 2x outtake I'd say is suffcient) then get the one priced lowest IMO. If they are really really close in price (like 20$ more for Vega) my choice would be the 1070 as well. If Vega is cheaper, definitely go there. If you lack the case airflow, get the 1070.

HOWEVER. Given the currently smaller price gap between a 1070 and a 1080 (because 1080 is less efficient for mining which is a hot thing ATM) it may be well worth moving up to a 1080. Its a serious boost from the 1070, 25-30% more perf for a lower price difference in most cases.

The bottom line, don't overpay for a 1070 :P

About the CPU, I'm running a much older but OC'd 3570k and yes, with a 1080 there is a *slight* CPU limitation but only in very small selection of games, there are many occasions where I can get the 1080 to sweat and that's just running 1080p as well. You run a higher res, so the CPU limitation will be lower. Its hardly a real bottleneck, and nothing's stopping you from plugging the GPU in a new rig in the future. Also GPU demands even at the same res will keep going up, CPU not so much.

I also had a 780ti before this, it was quite an experience both in heat and performance going to Pascal.

I currently, for my cooling setup, I have 2 120mm fans up front and a 120mm AIO exhaust in pull.

What CPU do you have?

Note that if it's too weak for a 1070/1080, then it's also too weak for Vega.

Why not complete your system specs in your profile? The forum can then help you better.

EDIT: I see you've edited your OP. Yes, that's pretty old and will bottleneck any modern card, even your 780 Ti to some extent. You can still play ok on it though, if all you want is 60fps. Ideally you need a CPU and a GPU upgrade, but I get that this costs a lot of money.

This situation will probably be building heat in the case, Vega will have an impact on that and not in a good way. A 1080 with one outtake is already a bit over the edge of comfortable unless you run your fans at higher speeds (noisy)

@qubit i5 6600, he said in TS

I'd reckon on a 1070 it won't have a noticeable impact, but on a 1080 you might lose 10-15% perf worst case due to CPU clock capping at 3.9Ghz. Depends in a big way on what you play most.

The i5 6600 isn't too old, about 2 years.

Sorry, I was thinking of the really old 6600 from a decade ago. My bad. In that case, your CPU is fine and won't bottleneck a 1080.

Keeping in mind what I said about Vega, do you still wanna go for it?

If you want to upgrade now (as in this month) you should go for the GTX1070 but if you can wait until October (maybe AMD can get over the shortage) you could probably get an RXVega 56 aftermarket for a decent price. Do you have Freesync on that monitor?

No.

-1070/1080 if you want to upgrade now and cheaper

-Vega 56/64 if you can wait till october/november, make sure you have well ventilated case and good PSU.

@Jez :) upgrade to: GTX 1070 / 1080 otherwise, keep your GTX 780ti, solid card, solid cooler, little bit noisy, but ultra efficient! also your CPU is pretty capable to handle a GTX 1080 / 1080Ti, Skylake i5's are solid processors,

Also, fill your System specs here!, will help to be helped!

Regards,

Stick with the 780Ti for now, once Vega and non ref designs are in go to a local shop and have them do a test if possible for noise.

Your thinking of the Vega 64. The 56's power consumption and noise is actually pretty good.

I have a few 1070s (Gigabyte G1-Gaming 8GB) here. They throw out some very good frame rates at high settings. They are pretty quiet too.
1070s are a good buy.

1070 is a good GPU, but at the current price, it is overvalued. I remember before the mining craze occurred, the 1070s were approaching $300, which almost had me buying one. The mid-high end GPU market is still inflated due to mining. If you absolutely need to upgrade, on a budget, get a 1060 6GB. Very good performance for this generation at this price range. If you've got money to blow, then a 1080. The Vegas are intriguing as well, but we probably won't see the supply of them increase until the end of the year.
