So tell me about Crossfire X.

I just noticed that my motherboard is Crossfire X compatible. What exactly is Crossfire X? I have googled it, but I can't really get a straight answer. It seems that it's the latest generation of Crossfire and that you can use up to 4 cards and mix different cards together. So what is the skinny on it?

more than 2 cards mainly. Also ability to mix and match different cards.

In your case JC it would mean you could do a 3850 + 3870 or 4850 + 4870. I'm running the 4850 + 4870 setup now and it's working great!

I was planning on doing a set up with a 3870x2 and 2 3870s. But since have gone with 2 4850's and have no need for the 3870x2, and have already sold the 3870s.

Best bet is to use 2 identical cards, but it on a budget then yes you can use different makes and models. The higher end card will allways scale down the to lower end cards performance when using differant cards.

Make sure you get a 512mb one, if you get a 256mb 3850 your 3870 will only be able to use half of its memory.

must be of the same genaration so no 38x0+48x0 crossfire
everything on the HD 3800 Generation can be crossfired
everything on the HD 4800 Generation can be crossfired

and max 4 GPUs, so basicly you can run a 4870 X2 plus 4870 and a 4850, or four 4870 or four 4850, or two 4870 X2s can be connected

got it?

if you mix ram sizes it will downgrade the fastest card to the amout of the slowest like if you got a 4870 with 512MB and get a 4850 256MB in crossfire you only get 256MB on the 4870
