@op : have you tried this method?

Install from Disc rather than download from steam.

Great find and it's more or less as I thought, Valve really want you to run the latest copy regardless of your situation or technical expertise. Therefore, they make this kludgy version that only works off the disc and for PC's only. I hate being forced like that.

I hate Steam's Backup and Restore system as well, because I made a 400GB backup of all my games, and when I go install them on a new machine, Steam has to download crap off the internet to install a game regardless (and then starts downloading the game, which stalls the rest of the game installations), and by the time it gets through all the games it has finished downloading them from the internet and not copying them from my HDD. It's dumb.

Yours is a very good example of the enforced updating. Dumb indeed. I wonder if it's got anything to do with antipiracy? It could be, because to get the updates off the servers, you need to authenticate. What do you lot think?

Yes, but doesn't it then immediately start the online update with no option to back out of it?

Probably, i loathe steam generally, they try to make you install everything from the internet, make it hard to play games offline, and infringe our rights and privacy with the excuse of piracy when its THERE fault they get pirated, not ours!!

It installs from the disc but will update as well any patches etc, so its better than downloading the whole game.far as i know anyhow qubit:)

That's what I was going to say. I just reinstalled windows, installed steam on top of the old install, launched a game and *poof* it just worked like nothing had ever changed.

Hi there,

Well, I'm trying to install MW2 for the first time, and it's giving me the same problems as the first post. I've tried all the suggestions here, including "instal from media", but no luck. I really don't want to download the whole damn game. Anyone else have any suggestions?

Thanks.

I'm beginning to think this is a systemic problem, as there are now multiple threads here and elsewhere about it. I'm just wondering if it could be an issue with a steam update or something.

1. open steam, click install game.
2. wait a minute while it creates the directory, then pause the download.
3. Exit steam and close it down
4. install the game from the disk into the directory created by steam.
5. open steam, go to game properties for the game.
6. click "verify the integrity of the game cache"
7. wait for steam to download missing portions (patches etc)
8. play

I tried doing that maybe 6 months ago, and half of my games ended up being corrupt as well as causing general Steam problems so I wiped everything and started over.

I wish Steam also had an "Install All" or at least a checklist to install whatever games, because you either have to install them one by one, or you can use the Backup and Restore crap that takes 3 days for a 500GB library and doesn't even use the disc because it decides to download the game anyway after getting the "magical files" it needs to start installing the game. Love Steam, hate dealing with the games and backup BS. Still better than finding a million scratched CDs though.

Tried that, didn't work, it opened up Steam and started downloading the whole game. But I don't see how it could work anyway, as you need Steam to install, unless I'm somehow doing step 4 wrong.

no you're doing steps 1 and 2 wrong. steam creates the directory, you stop steam and then you install the game from the disk to that directory.

also steam must be off, not in offline mode but off, aka no steam services in the task manager when you install the game.

I haven't read the entire thread, but here's a method I know that works:

Log in to Steam and click on Library.
If you have already tried installing the game, right-click on the game, select Delete local content, and confirm.
Insert the first disc into your computer.
Close Steam (Steam > Exit).
Press Windows Key + R to open Run
In the Run window type:

"C:\Program Files\Steam\Steam.exe" -install E:

Replace E: with the CD/DVD drive you are installing from if is not correct.
Replace C:\Program Files\Steam if your Steam installation is not in the default location.
Press OK. Steam will launch and ask you to sign in if you do not have your password saved. Your installation should continue from the disc.

OK, I tried again. I started installing, let it begin the download. Then I paused the download and exited steam properly. I then rain the setup program on the disc - the options it gave me were play, reinstall, uninstall. I select reinstall. It then starts up the steam client service automatically. After 2 minutes or so, it then pops up the message "validating Steam files - 100% complete" and when I go back to steam, I see the downloads are still there and still paused.

I've also tried the command line to try force the install from the disc, but no good either. This is really ridiculous - what point is there to buying the discs if you cannot install from them?

I think I've run into that acouple of times where it would still think its downloading. when you un-pause it will act as if nothign has downloaded but if you let ir run a few minutes, it will detect the rest of the game files. It's some kind of glitch in the steam game manager.

Did you try BP's method? you shouldn't have to download the whole game if you've got the disk. I agree that's ridiculous.

Tried BP's method already, no good. I tried letting it run, but it was definitely downloading, not spooling off the disc. No idea what else to try. Annoying, as I finished MW1 yesterday, so want to get into MW2.

I think it's a steam problem as I've tried the Run "Steam/Steam.exe -:install :E " etc for other games and it has worked like a charm. Seems now, a download is the only way to go! :(

Ok, there was a steam update, and now it is installing from the disc. However, once installed, it then starts the game update process. Problem is, it seems to want to download the entire game, again! So it seems to be partially fixed, but still no good.

it sounds like install from disk is broken on steam for this game. bummer
