Technical Issues - TPU Main Site & Forum (2022)

This is the post in question

Images loaded fine here for me too

Could the permissions of the files have been incorrect, or they tried loading during whatever thing you were tweaking at the time on the servers and smashed F5 too hard?

Permissions are all automatic, didn't do any server work on Saturday evening

Might be a good idea to exclude user-generated content from the banning engine, so that people can't sabotage each other

Ok, so it wasn't anything we were doing wrong or any type of attack then. Started to get a bit concerned that something hinky was going on.

What was changed to fix the problem has had a side-effect: Images in posts are now failing to load and display.

Additionally, as I tried to upload this screenshot, the upload failed and I had to switch over to the alternate network and browser again to get this posted.

EDIT:
And I'm now getting the "err_connection_refused" message again. I was fine until I clicked on the link Mussels posted above to see which post he was referring to. If I had to guess, I'd say that post from @onemanhitsquad has broken something, needs to be hidden/deleted and closely examined.

Same here, lol. I'm on a VPN now, running out of networks  I was able to get IP banned on mobile by visiting that page. The website ceased to respond after I got back to the main Forum page - not while I was on the Nostalgic Hardware thread.

Except, on mobile, photos still do not load. I managed these screenshots, which I must link to externally as I'm having the same photo upload issue too. "Security" error.

Standard mobile and desktop mode with Firefox on Android.

edit: Yeah, that post needs to be deleted. It's 100% the cause of these issues - no fault on @onemanhitsquad , just a weird accident.

It really does.

no fault on @onemanhitsquad , just a weird accident.
I don't wish to lay any blame, but we can't rule out a janky form of attack until the cause is known.
(Nevermind)

Either way, that post seems to be the root of the problem and needs SWIFT removal.

EDIT:
Just tried to report that post and the relay point was insta-banned. Had to change relay points again to restore access. So let's try this;
@Tatty_One @bogmali @phill @Mussels @the54thvoid

Will one of you please delete the following post so we can stop with this nonsense?
https://www.techpowerup.com/forums/threads/tpus-nostalgic-hardware-club.108251/page-553#post-4746920

I'm very certain we're not the only users getting insta-banned after accessing it.

I'll leave it in @w1zzards hands - he can undo any bans that happen, but mostly he needs to find out *why* this is happening
I'm not affected - which makes me think it's some sort of permissions thing where mods/staff can see it, but regular users cant?

Did an attached image think it's posted in the mod lounge, or something?

I'm familiar enough with Xenforo to know you can hide that post without actually deleting it. Please do so.

@W1zzard
This problem is not exclusive to TPU logged in users. I've had a few friends visit the page with that comment and within a few seconds they are unable to access the site at all.

I'm going to guess that as you say, those images have elevated permissions, and that when your browser loads the page as a standard user / guest, all those requests to load the images are denied and are considered multiple attempts at loading a prohibited page. Hence the text only, no actual loading of the image. All of the 403 errors that W1z PM'd me from my IP address contained each of those photos' names.
Again.... guessing. Hopefully W1z is able to diagnose how exactly this occurs.

Ah I get it now .. you must be logged in to view those attachments .. not sure why.

I've updated our scripts to ignore all permission denied errors for attachments

Edit: found the problem. These images were posted as attachments to another post, that he deleted. And since the post hosting the original content is deleted, XenForo will show a login page for all non-moderator users

Thanks for taking the time to fix this W1zzard :)

I visited that set of posts on Friday and have not even been able to come back to TPU until this morning. Was like the site was down completely.

I was in the nostalgic thread and went to thank @lexluthermiester for noticing that the images would not post. That was the last time I was able to get to TPU until now.

Thanks for letting us know, and very sorry about the troubles. After fixing the detection script I removed all IP bans for all users who could have been affected by this.

In case anyone is still unable to get in, ping me here, or w1zzard@techpowerup.com

Hi,
Can someone go here and see if it opens ?

Or do you get this

Indeed, those mondays .. had I looked more closely on your error page I could have told you that your system clock is wrong

Hi,
What was it "contained a date in the future" bit on the error page

Error code: ..._future_response

also in the description "contains a date in the future"

That makes sense in hindsight - some of our users like lurking logged out, and being from a deleted post explains a lot about permissions
(I've made that mistake before and glitched things, trying to copy attachment links from one post to another)

Is there a way to suggest a correct sub for some new postings? I ask as although we have a sub for crypto the threads end up in a lot of other subs, maybe a word filter suggestion? Also not just crypto, but other hardware as well, might make the forums a bit easier to transverse for noobs.

Example, LHR miner thread, when trying to add it to the Graphics card section would pop up/suggest that it should be in the cryptocurrency subforum instead?

Or someone asking about SSD Raid would get the suggestion to post to the storage sub.

I know it all gets indexed the same by our mighty lord Google.

Report the post, add the suggestions, and if it makes sense, mods will move them.

Hi,
Had a few follow up posts not be merged automatically with my last post on a thread like it used to be, which by the way was a pretty cool feature now not happening.

Maybe ?

Working here :/
Is there a time limit ?

Last didn't merge was here

Automerge isnt active for several forums, certain threads, and I vaguely remember there being a time limit
