The Official Linux/Unix Desktop Screenshots Megathread

PCLinuxOS and F2FS as a root partition

Cool PC! I have looked at the EliteDesk Desk Mini's many times on eBay (Intel and pre-Ryzen AMD variants).
Thanks... actually this was only given to me like few months ago by wife's cousin... while organizing my computer room, saw this. Put my spare nvme and add my old 500gb HDD... and been using it since then... I barely use my laptop and desktop these days mainly because I like the silence of it.. :)

Linux mint was nice, but being on such an outdated MESA and kernel was causing issues with steam proton, and upgrading MESA broke things. Tried openSUSE. Installed borked itself, wouldnt boot to GUI. Swapped to majaro. Much better.

how would the kernel create issues is it a custom one??

wow that's a lot of cores....

Linux mint being an LTS runs on an outdated kernel. Said outdated kernel doesnt play nice at all with updated MESA. 21.3.1 was the highest I could get to work at all, and that required some tinkering. 21.3.9 is the latest amber release. Upgrading past whatever 22.x was stock with mint causes game crashes and other strange behaviour. Upgrading the kernel to fix that caused a buffet of other errors.

Correction, it runs on an older, known stable, kernel. There is a difference between "older" and "outdated". The Linux Mint folks focus on rock solid stability and carefully vet everything they include in their distro. This ensures stability and security, which is one of the many reasons why Mint is considered to be in the top tier of general public friendly distros, and deservedly so.

It's rock solid.....until you try to use steam proton stable, at which point it promptly shats the bed. Because it's version of MESA is outdated, and the kernel they use does not support the current version.

At some point the line is crossed from "older but stable" to "outdated". Windows 7 is "older, known stable", but most people would classify it as obsolete. Of course this is why I went to Manjaro instead of trying to upgrade mint anymore.

ROSA Fresh Desktop 12.4 and LXQt

I have been trying for some time to get quality audio sound from a Linux distro system over the analog connection.

What I have tried is, for example, configuring Quod Libet in bit-perfect mode.
Another thing I've tried is to have the audio apps use Jack instead of PulseAudio.

The result was that with these optimal audio settings still no acceptable sound quality could be heard. And other people could also hear the difference with OSS4 from BSD systems or Core Audio from macOS.

ROSA Fresh Desktop 12.4 has by default very good sound via music player daemon. Of the hundreds of Linux systems I have tested, it is the only one that produces a clinical sound using ALSA.

Why not use Pipewire? It will work with all apps that support the Pulseaudio API. I am also curious whether you have tried NetBSD with its sunaudio API and kernel mixer.

On the systems I've tested, PipeWire sounds exactly the same as PulseAudio.
I'm not talking about the ease of setup, or how well it works, or popping sounds and things like that.

I am talking purely about how correct the sound quality is on detailed and neutrally balanced speakers.
NetBSD and FreeBSD both use OSS4, with the difference that FreeBSD has an independent implementation of OSS4.

I think all BSD systems have real quality sound, but with Linux I only know of ROSA Fresh Desktop which produces sound approaching OSS4 and Core Audio quality.

woah that looks awesome! might do that on another system to try!

Garuda Dr460nized KDE? It is Arch-based and is basically just install and go, but it runs badly (especially audio) on virtual machines. No two words here: IT IS HEAVY.
It facilitates the installation of anything you might want to game on a Linux system with its tools at the Garuda Welcome utility (the first icon on the dock). Haven't had much time to actually try gaming on it, though.
I must say its dark theme sometimes gives me issues on using some applications though, e.g. FreeCAD.

so it's a bit resource heavy? have you ran it on a dedicated machine and what are the specs??

KDE on itself is never light, heavily customized that the distro comes then...
My laptop I run it on is equipped with a i5-9400, 16GB DDR4 and Optimus GTX1050/UHD630, installed on a Crucial MX500. With a rather robust machine like mine, it breezes through anything, some 4GB ram used with only the system and some tabs on FireDragon (forked Firefox) open.

Oh, I like those widgets! I'm just beginning and figuring out stuff, hence I use Conky but it's ..challenging.
Could you tell me what the cpu widget is? And does it work with gpu temp too?
