New lappy - who dis?

Buying fairly new hardware can be a little risky with Linux. Ended up with Pop! for now until I have time to see if I can get Debian configured. Pop! enabled both the integrated and discrete GPUs right out of the box, with a choice of which to use when right-clicking an app to run.

That's actually amazing!
I know for a fact Optimus is still a major PITA (primerun %command% being my greatest ally on the Steam parameters line), between the UHD630 and GTX1050 on my laptop.

I never got that working right on my Lenovo w530 my desktop environment freaks out every time I switch and one time I had to recover using timeshift and command line cuz the desktop environment would refuse to load. Not fun lenovo!!! ugh!

When the first AMD Threadripper CPUs announced and released, Pop!_OS has them working right after short time while other Linux distributions had issues and then System76 (owner of Pop!_OS) shared their fix to other Linux distributions.
System76 builds and sells PCs with Linux in mind. That is why they are good with hardware. Any dude who tried the OS, had their rare hardware just works right away without any fiddling. This is the really special thing about this OS is excellent hardware support.

I wish I could claim some mad linux skillz, but I just went through a few distros until I found one where everything worked in a live environment. Other were close, some had stupid things like the keyboard not working, but Pop! was a go right away. I'm pretty impressed considering this has a Realtek WiFi card. I assumed I'd probably need to swap it out for an Intel, but got lucky.

I didn't expect to work at all. I'm really excited that it worked out of the box. Possibly because it's all AMD so no nvidia driver package to mess with. I thought I'd have to use something like corectrl to manage, but so far so good. I assumed I might need to use Windows until the hardware was supported.

Definitely plan to check out the latest kernel when I have some time. This week is crazy at work and I'm traveling this weekend.

I really wanted to buy a System76 laptop, but this was such a good deal considering the specs I couldn't pass it up. I am thinking about one of their keyboards though. Just really expensive.

You can take a PC/Notebook and try Linux From Scratch and after that Beyond Linux From Scratch. There you learn a llot about linux and all the programs behind.

what's wierd is the realtek wifi on this inspiron is working fine... it's only a 1x1 card tho but it's good enough for now..

While the 1920X is a nice model, the 2920X is the better buy, for the money, currently.

Don't want one too bad... twitchy, expensive, and even more expensive to upgrade. I might get a 1950x... but a 2990wx is more than a new cpu... but yes it's bloody fun to run!
And yes I just checked... the 2920x is the best price for first gen... but I'll need at least a 16 core for my next purchase....

I found there are a lot of problems with slow distros like Ubuntu or worse mint or pop. On ultra new stuff. I think a lot of that will go away since we are at a turning point where new kernels are getting put into distros live and install environments.

I usually find a way, external wifi or Ethernet if I run into these problems and install the newest kernel and these problems tend to go away.

rolling releases like suse (my favorite) fedora or arch are less prone to these problems.

lets all remember this is a screen shot thread though. I love convos like this especially for this section if you want to move on to compatibly let’s create a new thread so we can help others since they wouldn’t look in a screen shot thread for that info….nor should they

I don’t want to have to boot anyone but we are steering off course more and more frequently now.

This is the RAM usage of OpenBSD after the PC has been up for almost two hours.
I find it quite impressive considering it is not a bare bones setup.
It is a fully functional 'desktop setup' with bspwm, Polybar, sxhkd, nitrogen and picom all running at that time.

It is also interesting how the system thinks about security, it makes the security of other systems feel primitive.
