It's my data center mentality shining through.. lol.

I know it's a forum and not a production data center, but still. a quick post here or something that says hey, working behind the scenes for the next xx... you may see some xxxxx errors. please ignore until xxx.

Clearly not a huge deal.. but more of a courtesy. :)
I agree it would be nice and I don't like it either when the site is down without warning either, but unfortunately it's not always possible / practical to put up warnings due to the nature of the issue and perhaps its urgency. I'm sure W1z could give you a fuller answer.

Benchmark Scores Faster than yours... I'd bet on it. :)
Well aware guys... i ran servers and mainframes in the hardware side supporting dozens of pieces of software for a 1500 pereon user base. just saying, when there is a chance to do so, it would be nice to get a warning. :)

Post mortem after emergency work where we dont get a notification would be good too. Not to tell us what happened, but just like his post above...hey oger the past xx you have had some db issues.. i was working behind the scenes, should be resolved now...

...except proactive instead of reactive.

I agree, sometimes it is certainly difficult to perceive or announce maintenance periods. For all we know they are emergency anyway. That said I have ran large infrastructures before and like you think a post mortem would be good. Not that I feel entitled to an explanation, more that I would find it incredibly interesting.

I agree with you from the aspect of finding it interesting. But I doubt many would. And even among those, fewer would really understand. For example, I would find it interesting but I am an electronics technician, not a programmer. So if the explanation involved a bunch of programming terms, I would likely be lost. But I can be lost and still interested.

I wonder how many were actually impacted. I bet only a small handful. I note at this moment, there are 6892 total on line. 89 are members, the rest are guests and robots. Assuming something similar when those outages(?) occurred, I wonder how many saw the error?

Any of the active users at the time of the outage could see it. Looking through the thread, you see there are plenty of people that post and mention it. And of course, that's only the people that post about it...

Clearly not a huge deal in the least. I can't imagine how busy he is behind the curtain, but since he typically answers the 'what happened' anyway, why not make it proactive? :)

I really try to avoid outages hard, but yesterday I had no choice, also screwed up a couple of times :D Never stop learning

Of course throwing money at the problem is always possible, but no reason to waste money imo, to avoid those downtimes.

I made some changes to our instance monitoring scripts.

We run Pacemaker + everything in Docker, shared storage on GlusterFS.
nginx for all web things, a few days ago I got rid of haproxy in the stack by using nginx+lua

Feel free to ask specific questions if interested.

why not make it proactive?
Simplest answer is, being proactive = time wasted writing announcements while I could fix things in that time. These downtimes are also not scheduled or expected in any way.

I was online "" outrage i could not post several times for 5 to 10 min" :)
Its Not a life or sanity affecting thing i just switch tabs in browser to something else for a while before i retry or do Something else for a while.

Would be nice and informative for a Dumb Placeholder page to Show Site Status instead of Bad Gateway 502 pop up on these occasions

You can be proactive at the end of it too.. meaning, when done doing your thing, then hit the forums and let us know. The only difference from that and what you do now is responding to people wondering what happened versus posting it was fixed. :)

Again, clearly not remotely a big deal.

Quite honestly this site works better than others I chat on for the most part, and when there are the random problems, W1zzard usually gets it fixed pretty quickly.

Here's a site I always refer to in finding out whether a site is up or not: http://www.isitdownrightnow.com/. All you do is type in the address and it will check for you whether it's down or not. If it is, I always know W1zzard is at work fixing things, but that doesn't happen very often.

Personally I'm not bothered if there's no warning or maintenance message. I find this site if anything has convenience features most others don't, which end up saving you far more time and stress. Like the way it tracks what threads you've been active in, and the alerts for that take you right to the last response you missed.

It also retains what responses you started typing if you get interrupted, which I find helps avoid retyping a lengthy post. All you need do is visit forums that are no more than glorified message boards, like Steam, and the many features here suddenly feel like luxuries. Overall this a very well structured forum, the best of the best.

I remember seeing a big construction site logo on here years ago (2011-12). I think it must have been in your stock of images or something, which I think would look good.

Opens up newegg app to Sammy 950 for me...

Samsung s6, latest OS.

Very unusual stuff... I have S7 Edge and LG G5... G5 works with stock OS... unrooted... albeit my S7 is my daily driver with android 7 and rooted... and probably the ad block in host file includes that www.anrdoezrs.net.

Well false alarm then. Thanks mates.

@W1zzard -- big boss man. what you do with the MSI Gaming 1070 X review??? lol

you wrecked it.
Fixed. For some unknown reason the timestamp of the review post was newer than that of the first comment, so the site engine thought the review text was in the 1st comment and not my original post. fixed now!

I find it interesting that the encoded URL is actually: www.anrdoezrs.net/links/2012219/type/dlg/http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820147466&utm_medium=Email&utm_source=IGNEFL112416&cm_mmc=EMC-IGNEFL112416-_-EMC-112416-Latest-_-InternalSSDs-_-20147466-S3A6A&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_sp=&AID=11552995&PID=2012219&SID=

Clearly, some data collection is going on.
Sounds a little like what Google does when you click on a search result. It records the click before redirecting you. Probably to find out how many people click certain links.
This is our affiliate link for newegg. The forum adds those in transparently, so TPU makes a little bit of money when you buy something through the links (about 1%)
