Didn't the Sims 3 have the record for highest cost for all DLC? Something like $88,000

"A simpoint is worth 10 cents. So everything on the Sims 3 store costs approximately $74,486.50. As for DLC/the game itself, the total is $439.81. So grand total, you're looking at $74,926.31 to own everything the Sims 3 has to offer."

wtf The funny thing is that some people are paying these prices for the DLC or they wouldn't be able to get away with charging so much.

Lol dlcs... All those costumes come to mind, I wouldn't want them even for free.
We're living in an epoch of cash cows.

I remember when Diablo 3 reaper of souls (it's not dlc but whatever) got released. Lol you almost had to pay a full price as if it was Diablo 4. I used to call it "Ripper of poor souls"

5 figure game prices? Are they mental? Or are we buying a briefcase filled with white dust, packed in neat little packages or a digital entertainment medium? Sometimes it seems there is no difference...

Its a simulator some of their stuff adds scenic routes others add real life locomotives etc. Funny thing is you dont need them all example. I love the steam era so have no need for the diesel locomotives or electric etc etc. Its a die hard simulator. It is what it is.

Anyone who is a parent, and has kids that play video games can tell you DLC is the real con.
buys COD for 59.99...2 months later little "jimmy" jus twont shut up unless he gets the New dlc for COD...a god damn map($30)! 2 months later again. .. now there are new Skins for guns... guess what....Little jimmy wants that too($30).....and so on and so forth until the next con is released. But it's obviously not just children...that damn counter strike is just as bad. "uncle can i have $10" "for what" "theres a dlc I want" ....then i find out its a different LOOKING knife. not a DIFFERENT knife... A Different LOOKING knife!! :banghead: DLC, can lick my B-a-l-l-Z.

Do you remember the days when additional game content post launch was something to look forward to?

Pepperidge Farm remembers.

On a serious note, this is how most of the world is going, isn't it? Go to the Saint's Row 3 page, and the amount of DLC is absolutely preposterous. Same idea for Saint's Row 4. Before either of them got in on the action you had Team Fortress 2, selling random gear in relatively rare containers. EA and the other publishers do this because we're invested in this crap enough to claim it's amazing even whenever it isn't.

What I'm really looking forward to is the point where these people get too greedy. Whenever something like an NFL or FIFA game is sold with half the teams as paid unlocks we'll actually see some consumer anger. That will be a sweet day.

For the time being though, this is a niche product charging niche prices. Everybody wants what they see as the best segment of the railroading experience in a game, but there isn't ever going to be a huge user base. The DLC therefore is catering to whatever that player is willing to spend money on. It's hard to swallow as a complete package (read: impossibly insane), but at the same time it gives the enthusiast exactly what they want without costing them several hundreds of dollars for stuff they don't. Would you pay $20 for a dozen maps $10 for the 3 maps you'd actually play?

However the TS 15\16 though sim on steam would make it look good, it is partly why i will not buy a game today on release i can wait like i do for stuff come on Netflix no bother to me and saves me tons of money.

So to me they are only shooting them self's in the foot and it will backlash at some point as i always end up paying much less in the end with the DLC's.

However some of the locomotives are made so poorly that they should be giving the money to the customer!

As long as people are buying the DLC's are here to stay.

...I'm going to try to address the word soup that I'm seeing. Please correct me if I'm missing the points.

1) You can get games cheaper if you wait.
Absolutely. There's always a dedicated group of people who do this. Thing is, by the time they're cheap nobody is playing them any more. Part of a lot of games is the story, and it's difficult to say Bioshock would be as stunning if you knew that Andrew Ryan wasn't the final boss months in advance of playing it. Welcome to the internet age, where gratification must be instant and enormous.

2) DLC is shooting publishers in the foot.
I think @64K summed it up best. YOu can't be shooting yourself in the foot if you make more money from DLC than from the base game. While you and I might find it personally dissatisfying, that doesn't mean it isn't profitable.

3) Simulators on Steam make this DLC look viable
Yes and no. What I said was that this sort of DLC fiesta was acceptable on a niche game. It's market is very dedicated, and they're willing to fork over large amounts of cash to get exactly what they want. It's a lot like Steel Battalion, where they sold a $200 chunk of plastic controller to immerse players in the mech seat. Steel Battalion didn't sell well, but it didn't have to move a million units to be profitable. They charged more, because their market supported it.

This model doesn't work for thing like TF2 because everybody wants to be part of the biggest event. People are less willing to spend money because there are tons of alternative options. That doesn't exist with the train simulator market.

As much as I hate to say it, train simulator can charge what they want for whatever they put out. They've no competition, and their player base is getting exactly what they want. You may not agree with it (I know I don't), but the reality is we aren't their niche. As such, our opinions don't matter. We can't vote with our dollars, because we have no alternative.

I actually did just play through Bioshock a few months ago, and I had NO IDEA. Sometimes it's fantastic to be as out of touch as I am!

Although point 2 and 3 i agree with which does depend on the game in question how ever point 1. i cannot agree with i found that BS3 was a alright game without finding or spoiling the experience and to be honest with BS2 the DLC ( well one of them )is what made it much better as that's when the real game actually came alive.

I knew it was a alright game ( hate the unreal engine ) but after waiting a year and getting with DLC's for $18 made it worth while. As for anyone playing it still i don't care if people playing it still or not as there are very few games that i play online constantly and those games always have people playing them.

Most part DLC's are just trash lets face it, and more and more of these company's are adding important stuff in them story wise they are a kinda must have.

There is ways to find out stuff about a game without spoiling it and tbh with most things the best experience is personal experience, and it's not as if i got to rush some were talk to to people about it.

Let's agree to disagree.

The reason I made point 1 is that any truly good game is spoiled quickly. "The cake is a lie" was a phrase shortly after Portal became a thing. I knew about the ending to Bioshock Infinite days before I could get the game (at the time I was away from home). It's hard to really shield yourself from any spoiling for the 6+ months before a game decreases in price to the levels you're talking about.

On a side note, I have no clue what games you reference, so if you could alleviate that ignorance I might understand your perspective a bit more.

Likewise, DLC in itself isn't bad. For every dozen crappy skin packs you get something like New Vegas's stuff. For every dozen gun skins you get something like Bioshock Infinite's completely new story. Heck, in games like Mass Effect 2 you got Lair of the Shadow Broker, and cosmetic DLC for your characters. DLC isn't bad, it's just greedy people abusing it.

I think we stand together when speaking about cosmetics, and loping off content at the end of development for early DLC. It's shady, and anyone guilty of doing so is not to be trusted. At the same time, New Vegas would have sucked without Honest Hearts and Lonesome Road to fill in all the story gaps (though the other two are great, I feel they didn't exactly impact the main story in the same way).

Honestly, I love DLC. I hate those that would turn additional content into a leech on an otherwise good game. There will be a point when somebody step too far, heck Square's "Enhance your game" pre-order crap proved that people were actually willing to stand against that drivel. My hope is on that day the partitioning of content dies, but we are reasonable enough to embrace DLC as an expansion of what we love. DLC isn't a dirty word, yet it's hard to say this when you see how publishers are using it to kill the industry.

Edit:
I actually did just play through Bioshock a few months ago, and I had NO IDEA. Sometimes it's fantastic to be as out of touch as I am!

Agreed. My best experience with this sort of thing is System Shock 2. Having not played 1, it was great to beat the game and get a twist ending.

I like how the game dev replied, "Well you would never buy all train models for a real set, so that's okay for a video game too." He knows exactly what he is doing, extracting money from old rich guys that have more time and money than living room square meters.
