why are many of my applications so blurry in windows

this happens in widgets and many other applications and its very annoying

Something with your hardware acceleration (video/gpu) seems off.

Did you try the latest chipset drivers / BIOS for this specific laptop? You can check the manufacturer website for any updates. This looks device specific.

Yup, the scaling. ^^

Set it to 100% log off / on and the apps will look clear again.

100 percent scaling is terrible
 
I have my scaling at 300% currently but I've tested many out and I've never come across windows showing menus and text like that.
 
That looks like over-tuned software image sharpening to me.

Exactly I wasn't focusing on the not-pixel-perfect text, but rather the sidebar there with those artifacts.
