I think thats more a case of microsoft being masters of keeping the hackers out the operating system.

Guess they cracked the ps3 !

for those interested. My friend did it awhile ago and its actually pretty snappy and quick.

Xbox is made by microsoft. Sony or nintendo could never get the rights to run windows based pc games on there concoles.

And as with Microsoft they couldn't on current consoles even if they wanted to. The hardware on a console may be similar to a pc but it isn't close enough. All 3 current consoles - ps3, wii and xbox 360 rely on IBM processors which have G series instruction sets and are not x86 compatible. The available memory on consoles is very low as well - you're looking at 64-128mb of system memory - no current pc game could run with that on a non x86 cpu. The graphics are old - the 360 uses a gpu based on early hd2k series gpus but lacks a lot of the power - in games like halo 3 it runs at a resolution of less than 1280x720 - some odd res around the 500 verticle pixel mark - that's due to the lack of power in the gpu. The ps3 gpu is based on the nvidia 7xxx series and the wii gpu is based on the gamecube gpu - not anywhere near new.

All of these weak or incompatible parts with pc games means that for a pc game developer to get them to work on a console and a pc they have to do a lot of code modification - this costs money and so they often release the console version first and code for the console first as they can make the console to pc transition easier due to not having to fine tune everything for the pc release and just put high system requirements to make up for inefficient code (they can't increase the hardware reqs of a console game).

Next you'll think "couldn't they use pc compatible hardware then?" - well yes they could, and then they'd be selling gaming pc's, which wouldn't fit their business model as they'd have competition, varying hardware configurations over time and non-exclusivity on their hardware platform which currently enforces brand loyalty on people with only 1 console.

As for xp running on a ps3 that's a highly b*stardised version of xp which i doubt can play any recent pc titles very well due to lack of gpu drivers and the low memory resources available on consoles.

I'd say that sums it up pretty well. ^^

haha dang I should have looked at his location......

Whoops, sorry that's my bad. I usually convert to USD or mention my numbers as CAD for ease of use to the forums.

First off I disagree, PC gaming is not going anywhere. I feel the main reason why the Mainstream get 360's and ps3's is the fact that 1. They don't know anything about computers/building them 2. Are too lazy to build one 3.don't have the money for a top of the line PC (even though a good one runs around the same or a bit more than a console not including monitor case and other small componets, unless you settle for a crap case, monitor, etc.) 4. Are ignorant and think consoles are better(that always makes me laugh) so no PC gaming is not dead. You forgot one add this to your poll: should bill gates cap himself? Poll: should we nuke all 360's due to the fact that they are junk and work for 4 months? WIN!

The reason I have an Xbox360 is because it feels different to be on the couch in front of the TV, perhaps with a friend over playing split screen. Its not necessarily better, just different. Past that, PC all the way.

My Xbox has lasted a year and is still going strong. Mind you I touch the thing maybe once a week for a few hours.

As long as people are buying $500 dollar video cards and $50 dollar games there will always be PC gaming. What I want to see is a cartridge system for games like back in the Commodore 64 days. :D

I have a dual system that plays SNES/NES games. All the pimps own one.

Its cool breeze I honestly dont even know the exchange rate these days. Not since my epic Windsor days

Well I treated my 3 consoles that way too. I only touched them maybe once or twice every two weeks sometimes even longer. All 3 died, my ps3 took alittle less than a year, the 2 xbox's took less than 4 months.

Mind telling us why they died?

pC gaming will never die... the controls are too good and the image quality is even better.

Red rings of death on crapboxes, firmware got
Jacked up on PS3 I still have to send it
In, I just don't really care enough to right now.

I disagree. PC gaming is not dieing. You based this conclusion on the fact that the local video game store doesn't really have a PC section, but they never really had a PC section. Ever since NES, the consoles have ruled the local game store. And PC gamers don't really care, we buy everything online.

You go to a store to buy a console and games, you go online to buy PC parts and games. I don't think PC gaming is dying, I think local game stores are though.

And the XP running on the PS3 isn't a hack, or anything special. All they are doing is running XP on a vmware under linux.(I believe it is vmware at least, but I know it is some kind of virtual PC.) Installing Linux on the PS3 has been officially supported for a very long time now, and when you run XP under Linux on the PS3 it is far from snappy. It is rather sluggish actually, OK for doing basic tasks, but gaming isn't possible at all.

Yeah the Xbox 360 is really quite a pathetic system, I feel like they should really almost be sued. More than half of the units put in production had to be sent in for repair. All MS did was release a couple of attachments you could pay them for extra cooling and extend their warranty that you would inevitably have to use. That's pathetic. Yet people keep buying them for some reason. If you needed a testament to MS's power you need look no further than the 360, I don't know if many other companies could release such a system with such a remarkable failure rate and still be actively competitive in the market.

I agree farlex. My brother had 3 die on him!!! Add that to my 2 and you have 5 total. Just from us.

I think you guys are representative of the total population too, that's what's even worse. I just wish halo 3 would get to the PC, that remains the only reason I would even look at one, but I have conceded to never buy something that is so poorly made. I'll have to borrow it or something.

bad deal I fixed my friends rrod deal because he voided his warranty. when I cracked the top to look inside I wanted to vomit at its design. They mid as well have incased it in lava :)

Please borrow one. I don't advise anyone wasting money on that POS. I loved my PS3 the only reason it got messed up was my fiancé turned it off by Mistake when it was updating and jacked the firmware up.

Yeah the design is pretty bad. You could cook eggs on it, that's about all they are good for.

Heh, that "PC gaming is dying" got old 4 years ago. :P

Fun thing about PS3 though: My brother bought something and got a PS3 for free (the old one, compitable with PS2). Now his 9 year old daughter have it connected to her 15" old TV, and the TV is painted yellow. Can you say a waste of computing power? :P
