I play RPG over everything else, but on consoles it seems to be dying, 5 remember back on the ps2 and ps1 and n64, goin way back there was always a dam good rpg to play, not like that anymore though . . .

for the most part pc games r made to run with a mouse and keyboard, console games r made to run with a gamepad

and u coudlnt be more wrong about pc gaming is dieing.. its never been stronger and any report you read see's pc gaming as a growing industry. Some reports that show retails sales will report its down because alot of people have converted to digital download.

What i want to see are better ports, i meanhow hard would it be to port MGS, Halo and FF to the PC?

And yet they fail hard at doing it

It's actually seems to be easier to port from the PC to the console, than to port a game originally made for a console to the PC.

Remember that if you make a game for a PC, you've already tested it on a ton of different hardware and then to port it just have to make it work on one (like XBox, unless you are also porting to PS3 etc.). When going the other way, you have a game that was perfected on one machine and now it has to work on lots of different hardware.

That being said, I think many developers get lazy (or are under perssure to release) and don't take the time to make it really PC friendly.

I think its more the pressure to get it released on time. EA for example runs its developers ragged to get games like FIFA out each year for the xbox360, PC, PS3 and Wii. Even managing that once a year for the past 10 years is incredible.

You know I never got the yearly sports game releases, especially now. Most times that I've played consecutive years in the game, I've barely noticed a difference. It seems to be more for the differing teams and trades that have happened. Well, now we all have game systems that can be updated with a small file. Maybe make sports games a platform that lasts 2 or 3 years, and it gets updates to reflect changes in team makeup.

Although I know there are people out there who buy every year, I would probably buy every third or fourth year of these games. Mind you they can probably make more money off yearly releases.

pc gaming wouldn't die at all,i'm sure most people would agree that FPS is by far better than console, most people today play console cos they don't do any research on what kind of system requirement or what component they need to run the games.
console is just for all the people who wouldn't pay lot of money to keep upgrading there PC to run whatever the game they want play.
I'd say PC gaming is for those who are mature enough about there attitude etc;never heard any little 10-12 year old when i play something online act like a complete moron going "i'm going own youu" you get that sort of crap from console.

it is not dying, many people have a console and pc .like myself and also have fps games like cod on both, or maybe thats just me , i enjoy having the option to play great games on pc aswell.

when a game is made for console, they are made for one video card, one CPU, one sound card, and one, pre-set amount of ram.

Consoles are for lazy people who want it to work like a DVD player. plug it in and away you go.

So PC gaming is directly related to the amount of space they get in a retail store? That's fine then, PC World near me has 6 24 foot gondolas FULL of PC gaming, and has 4 8 foot gondolas for Console gaming. :)

Also, a question to you all, How many "pirates" pirate the game and then go on to buy it? I know I do. I have a massive stack of PC games that I've bought after downloading the game and loving it. I've probably spent half what I spent on hardware this year on PC games.
I also have a stack of games I WISH I'd downloaded first instead of spending money on them, but eh.

They say PC gaming is dying because of pirating, but there are a lot of people who download the game, and then go and buy it.

left 4 dead, TF2, plants vs zombies. i saw and briefly played all of them pirated, before buying them through steam. and the games are great, so i'll buy any sequels or expansion packs no questions asked.

MS is in a tough spot with gaming - games are one of the top reasons we use Windows and with no games arriving, people my very well be more inclined to use other platforms - Lucky for MS, they are not the only ones shoving games out for Windows, so they can decided to put a game on the 360 only and not really worry about masses of angry PC gamers buying an Apple just to stick 'em one. The challenge they face is that if a block buster (Halo 3) is PC AND 360, the PC sales (pirated copies too) will eat into the 360 ones - hell, almost everyone I know owns a PC and only a few of them own a 360... Like me, they will not rush out and buy a game system just to play a few games when they know that most of them will be on PC eventually via a real release or emulator.

PC gaming is not dead - PC gaming will always be a richer experiance assuming the game is not overly buggy (i know only people like us care about graphics and such but...), and there are far more Windows PCs in the world than there are modern gaming systems. Yes, it is annoying to see only a small section for PC games in most stores, but how many Sims expansion packs and Blizzard Battle Chests do they need? Usually, you will only see generic MSN games on CDs, new releases, and the HUGE hits, like Diablo 2 and the Sims games - this is because those stores do not typically sell computers, they sell games and gaming systems. Since they are selling gaming systems, they want games there to help sales. Since you already own a PC and likely any older games you like, they only have games like I just mentioned - new, hits, and cheapo.

Hmmm... you know, last time I was at Wal Mart their Games for Windows section had nearly as many games as the 360, PS3 and Wii sections... the game system's section looks bigger though because of the Guitar Hero and Wii Fit hardware... So mayhaps this 'PC gaming is dead!' assumption is based on an optical illusion and not an actual count on games (depending on the store mind you).

I doubt mac would become a viable gaming machine with their current model of OS. Maybe linux but the amount of people who use windows for games is miniscule compared to the amount of average joe's who need it for email and stuff.

OS X is certified Unix now actually. ^_^ And yes, you have a point, but even a good chunk of those basic users like to buy a PC game every once in a while.

EDIT: I thought I would point something out - new PC games typically cost the same as their 360 conterpart and I've seen many 2007 games that are still $40+ so MS is not losing $ on the games either way, but if all games were PC and 360 at launch, MS would not be selling 360s... Another thing too, a 360 uses a PowerPC chip, and at the moment, Windows only runs on x86\64 CPUs (though it can be ported to PowerPC and RISC [Windows NT folks]) so you cannot just grab a random PC game and shove it onto a 360 without investing $ into recoding it a bit.

Besides, you cannot just pop open a 360 and install more RAM and drop in a 4870 X2... PCs are much funner in that aspect :D

sorry didnt read the other answers and Im sure someone posted this already.
uhh how about uhhh money?!?!?

Well pc gamers are the smart ones....take it every couple(maybe like 5 :/) years a new console comes out... so people have to buy new consoles to play whereas a simple upgrade can get you going on a pc or somtiems you get away without having to upgrade at all. win :)

What is wrong with the current OS model?

Snow leopard is almost pure performance enhancements :p

OS X actually provides a lot of cool animation tools that are unavailable with windows. There isn't a focused development like Direct X, but OGL works perfectly fine. Its good enough Microsoft doesn't want it around (i.e. attempts to leave it out of windows). The hardest part about gaming on OS X is getting a machine with good specs :p

The OS is fine, in fact ideal for gaming but Apple's restricted hardware is what makes it unlikely and unsuitable :( but when apple change that then it will end up like windows performance wise.

90%+ games on Windows are coded with DirectX. Apple doesn't offer DirectX and that is biggest reason few games are ported to Apple operating systems. Most Apple games are OpenGL.

OGL support isn't difficult..

Blizzard does it. EA now does it. ID does it.

Wait, what? ;)

Try not to get too anti-apple, it's contagious. :p

I was actually surprised when Microsoft tried to kill OpenGL. They know the only reason they have any remnants of a market share, and they're guarding it with everything they got.

It is a downgrade from DirectX in the graphics department and most publishers are absolutely convinced that graphics are thee most important feature of a game.

Note the games that are designed for Windows and Mac like Spore. The graphics aren't anything to get excited about. The Windows version still uses DirectX but they're not using all the tricks DirectX supports that OpenGL doesn't.

OpenGL is used all the time in CAD, game design, etc. It just isn't popular with the game developement community except for Aspyr (which ports DirectX games to OpenGL for Mac).

.

Thats all the mainstream gamers think about anyways, why change things?

I don't care about graphics so yeah, OGL is fine by me. I'm the minority though.

Still, DirectX is designed for games including standardization of input, audio, video, and networking. OGL only targets part of the entire DirectX package. From a developer standpoint, DirectX offers a lot at no additional cost. That's why it is so attractive and clearly the dominate force in personal computer game development.

PC games dead. HAHA thats funny. i am a PC gamers coverted from concoles. PCs are ahead of there games. you can still play with decent FPS with a single core and a 7600GT. so you can build a $450 rig and play on that system for years!

also PC> concoles. IMO.

lets all kick back and game, no matter which you have.
