I'm starting this thread with a discussion about the Wii U's technical specs and hardware.

My First question is how powerful is this in % of PS3/360

same as xbox in design but another core and 0.3 ghz more, should come out just above a ps3 in power and about 1/4-1/3 faster then the xbox

Pee U. That's what I think whenever I hear this name. I think we already had a thread on this anyways.

have the specs been released yet?

Size: Approximately 1.8 inches tall, 6.8 inches wide and 10.5 inches long.

Controller: The new controller incorporates a 6.2-inch, 16:9 touch screen and traditional button controls, including two analog Circle Pads. This combination removes the traditional barriers between games, players and the TV by creating a second window into the video game world. The rechargeable controller includes a Power button, Home button, +Control Pad, A/B/X/Y buttons, L/R buttons and ZL/ZR buttons. It includes a built-in accelerometer and gyroscope, rumble feature, camera, a microphone, stereo speakers, a sensor strip and a stylus.

Other Controlls: Up to four Wii Remote™ (or Wii Remote Plus) controllers can be connected at once. The new console supports all Wii™ controllers and input devices, including the Nunchuk™ controller, Classic ControllerTM, Classic Controller ProTM and Wii Balance Board™.

Media: A single self-loading media bay will play 12-centimeter proprietary high-density optical discs for the new console, as well as 12-centimeter Wii optical discs.

Video Output: Supports 1080p, 1080i, 720p, 480p and 480i. Compatible cables include HDMI, component, S-video and composite.

Audio Output: Uses AV Multi Out connector. Six-channel PCM linear output through HDMI.

Storage: The console will have internal flash memory, as well as the option to expand its memory using either an SD memory card or an external USB hard disk drive.

CPU: IBM Power®-based multi-core microprocessor.

Other: Four USB 2.0 connector slots are included. The new console is backward compatible with Wii games and Wii accessories.

this is all Nintendo has released.

expect the worst. Triple Core, no Blu-ray or internal hard drive.

the official E3 Nintendo Wii u page is down.

a couple notes.

in order for Nintendo Wii U to support Blu-ray they have to pay Sony a licensing fee and second, the HDMI does not support 7.1 LPCM like the Playstation 3 it only supports 5.1 LPCM but it's an upgrade over the XBOX 360 Dolby Digital 5.1

and

Nintendo also reveals that the system uses its own proprietary "high density" discs - rumoured to be an off-shoot of Blu-ray technology. The actual capacity of these discs is not revealed.

it could be hd dvd for all we know

Oh please god no...

It is probably a Quad-Core PowerPC-based CPU. Quad-Core's are kind of the defacto design these days, and they wanted it to be easy to market and drive home that it's better than the others. If they just repackaged the Xenon CPU people would notice and they'd have a harder time ensuring people knew it was better. I'm most interested in what kind of GPU is in this thing...

if it's Watson it will have 16mb eDRAM because each core comes with 4mb and Watson only comes in 4, 6 and 8 cores.

Watson is a software layer so i have no idea what engadget is talking about, they are most likely referring to the POWER7 chip family

they are. it's all over the internet, even business sites. I think Kotaku reported it first.

Nintendo FTW! :D

That new "controller" is like a handheld console in itself. Seems a bit ungainly to be using for gaming. It's huge...

It also looks as expensive as the console itself

the Wii U can only support one Wii U controller, so unless you break the one that comes with the system you won't have to buy additional Wii U controllers for friends and family.

Iwata said the Wii U will likely be priced over 20000 yen ($250). Reggie said the pricing will be competitive with Microsoft and Sony.

There was actually a specsheet somewhere, I'll look it up when I get home.

From memory, it uses a 3.2GHz PowerPC quad-core, 1GB of graphics memory, 512MB of system RAM, 16MB of eDRAM for the CPU, Blu-Rays and a RADEON HD4800 series-based GPU.

it's been posted already. it's pre-E3 and Blu-ray has already been debunked.

Only 3 words is all I have to say: I like it!

Finally Nintendo got it right.

Their proprietary disc format still holds roughly the same amount of data as a Blu-Ray disc, so that argument is irrelevant.
