I'm pretty sure you have to enable it yourself tho? Unless it's an OEM device running the OEM-installed system, like a laptop for example.
The services start automatically but then stop if no configuration is found. However, the problem seems to continue even after the service stops. So it's better to disable them until microsoft fixes the problem, or to use a better drive encryption program.

Windows 11 October 2023 Update crashing games and File Explorer

KEY POINTS

  • Windows 11 October 2023 Update has introduced a bug causing games like Starfield to crash with error code 0x89245106 and has negatively impacted File Explorer’s performance.
  • Many users have reported that the error prevents them from playing certain Xbox games. The error code, 0x89245106, indicates the OS couldn’t detect the default user for the game.
  • While Microsoft initially didn’t acknowledge the issues in their official release notes, they have since recognized the problem on the Feedback Hub and claimed to have rolled out a fix. Some users have temporarily solved the issue by uninstalling the problematic update.

Haven't seen these issues yet on my system after the update though.

That's the known Location Services bug in 11. (or what it used to be called)

I went back to 10 and it has been perfect for me, I will try 11 again maybe Spring 2024, not sure. For now I am happy on 10.

Software encryption in general is slow, doesn't matter if its used sectors only or the whole thing.
This is not true for all full disc encryption methods. For some, a user will barely notice or see the difference.

there is the bias. Thanks bro!
So you're saying he's not allowed to have an opinion without being considered "shallow"?

@Solaris17 @R-T-B
So this debate you two engaged in got me thinking and I went looking for the answers. I wanted to know for sure which one of you was correct. The answer was unsurprising. The OS automatic use of Bitlocker has always been situational and can be as varied as it can be fine grained. You are both correct AND incorrect. It just depends on the circumstances. As a rule, I personally avoid Bitlocker as it has been(and still seems to be after playing around with it this week) less than optimal. However, I will give microsoft credit where it's due, they have improved it's functionality.

As for your blanket comment;
It is well thoughtout.
As I just stated above, it has improved. Well thought out it is not.

This thread though is full of some really disingenuous people though. It pretty much contains the following members in 185 pages.
Really? Welcome to the club!

- Encryption is bad
No one has said this. Many, myself included, actively use encryption and many of us use full disc encryption. Bitlocker is NOT the only solution and it's FAR from the best.

- Disable Fastboot and UEFI
And? There are situations where disabling one or both of of those "features" can be of benefit.

- Windows 11 is terrible and I hate change
The first, yeah many have said it. Who cares? So long as they don't drone on about it, let them express their opinions. Sometimes it gives us pros a chance to offer a counter argument and perhaps let them rethink their position. It's happened.

- Microsoft steals all my data
They admit this! Directly and openly. How have you missed that?

It is an echo chamber for people that dont read:

- White papers
- Descriptions
- Tutorials
Considering that this group you described includes you...

There is rare exception to this for someone that is open to actual education or even a new idea.
Teaching is a skill, learning is a talent. Knowing the difference is part of what defines a person...

Same for me, only my surface pro is on Win11, for only two reasons:
- Hidden sub-menus.
- Absence of never combine.

I guess it depends on how you define "slow." Also hardware comes into play. At nvme level sequential transfer speeds it can be quite a cpu hog. On a sata disk though, you really aren't going to care much.

As for the rest, Solaris and I are basically in agreement now so not much to rehash.

Looks like Kaby Lake Refresh is now the oldest gen of Intel CPUs that is supported. It is pretty transparently artificial at this point (good old Wintel(+AMD) cartel) because what is the difference between the original KBL and KBL-R from the perspective of the OS? Yes, a KBL-R mobile i5 is a quad core but then they are still supporting old Celerons (I am not talking about the E-core-based ones), so it's not about the number of cores clearly. So my Latitude 7490 (which is my newest system) is right on the edge of what is currently supported. What are the chances it will be Comet Lake or Ice Lake for 23H2 or whatever the next major update will be?

Furthermore, I was planning to install 11 in a Hyper-V VM on my EliteBook (to work around the TPM 2.0 requirement, which the Excavator-based EliteBook may or may not meet, depending on whether mine has a dedicated Infineon TPM or only the PSP fTPM) but according to the MS website the VM host CPU still needs to meet the processor requirements (which the Excavator-based A10 does not, by quite a large margin)... I don't even see my old 1600 AF on the list (although the 2600 is on there), so I don't know if even my decommissioned X470 system would be able to run the latest Win 11.

At this point they are just making it unnecessarily hard for people to become familiar with their stuff because, honestly, I don't care about their BS requirements; I use Linux for personal use anyway, so they can get lost with regard to that. But for corporate IT (certainly entry level) you are in 90% of the cases expected to know Windows stuff. Yes, eventually I will build an Alder Lake (or similar) home lab, but that's $$$. It's really disgusting how corps are just relentlessly squeezing the common person in these times (and I am still better off than most).

Skylake/Kaby Lake and Zen (not Zen+) do not support HVCI and VBS. That is the difference. Newer processors do.

Virtualization-based Security is not a CPU feature. It is a(n optional, mind you) software technology in Win 11. It relies on the CPU feature MBEC, which was introduced with Kaby Lake (and Zen 2 apparently for AMD) to avoid emulating an equivalent technology at a high performance cost (this is from the MS documentation, by the way). Yet, Kaby Lake is not supported but the microarchitecturally identical KBL-R (e.g. my i5-8250U) is. What is even stranger is that a Zen+ chip such as the Ryzen 5 2600 is supported despite apparently not even supporting MBEC. It's completely arbitrary. Microsoft even has documentation on how to turn off VBS for better gaming performance but at the same time is forcing people to buy a system with a CPU that supports a feature that ensures that it impacts performance less. It is clear that it is merely a pretext to force people to buy new hardware.

The main thing is to make sure steam has it's own drive. Aprt from that, i can do a reinstall and be near as was in less than two hours.

Doesn't most cable ISP have data caps? I'm on ATT + Directv Fiber I'm guessing

company I go with allows me to pay 15 a month for no data caps. and its worth 15 a month for me, as I stream in 4k, watch youtube in 1440p, games being massive in size, etc. 15 a month is fair to me, if that ever doubles to like 30-40 a month i will prob stop doing it and just utilize my offline backups more.
