Worth it to upgrade from 4870 to 5870?

I wanna enjoy the coming Crysis 2. Clearly my 4870 wont even be able handle Crysis 1 well. I read some reviews and it seems that 6870 is not good over 5870. I'm currently looking at some 5870 for sub 200. Do you think it is a good update or no?

Yes! I upgraded from a 4890 a while back to the 5870 and noticed a massive difference.

Mate, I just went from a 4890 to a 6970. Everything looks heaps better but the frame rate is the same.
What I am trying to say, is if your into 'benching' or numbers, then yes. Its worth it.
If your into enjoying your gaming, as in making it look nice, then buy the next gen card instead.

The 6 series may not be as fast (so to speak) but they dont have as much of a performance hit with all the nice stuff on as the 5 series.

From a budget standpoint, HD5850/GTX460 1GB . I personally like the GTX570 and HD6950. Those would be the cards I would choose coming from my own personal 460, not to mention i upgraded from an HD4870.

You will see a big improvement in games, 1x 4890 is enough to be considered as a mid-range card, going to a 5870 should more than double your performance and allow you to turn up all the eye candy at 1080p resolution without any problems.

EDIT: Although looking at your processor you may not get too big of an improvement in some games that are more CPU dependant.

I upgraded from a 4830 to a 6950 and tbh I haven't seen that much of a difference...
Not even in the eye candy...It's my CPU.....The only time I really feel a difference is when I OC the dog snot out of it...

I'd upgrade the rest of your system first....

Yes you will see a big improvement, like everyone else has said.

For me having a 4870X2 i wont see much of a difference as they perform pretty much the same, that said you could go crossfire 4870's for cheaper and have a similar performance?

If you get an XFX HD6870 dual fan card, grab it. Worth it for 230-240$

If you get a HD5870 deal for less than 240$, then grab that

I am in the same boat, but I've already decided to wait for HD7000 series. Then it will be good upgrade and even bigger difference in performance.

as tesselation isn't a real big deal (imo), then I would suggest a 58xx over 6xxx (less 6990 for obvious reasons)

but on the same point, you could just xfire with another 4870 - is it 512 or 1Gb you have? if its 512, then i would buy a 1gb 5870 but if the price is good for you get a 2gb 5850 and overclock it, this then gives you the option to upgrade ur cpu without need for another card for atleast 1-1.5 yrs (push that 2-2.5 seeing as you still have a 4870)

Why would he want to buy a slower card for more money?

Me too but ( explained lower down )

Me too :P. and your right to a point it just depends on what you play.

Which to me is were people go wrong when looking for a upgrade. It's always worth checking the forums of games some times to see how the card works.

Games like Fallout 3 \ Vegas play smoother were games like Rv6 Vegas 2 play just the same. And then you have games like Arma 2 were there is not much difference at all but the extra ram does help.

So the real question is what games you play ?.. Then a better assessment can be made which would suit your requirements better.

Honestly your 4870 will be fine with Crysis 2. I can play it with my 8800GS with decent fps. Dont compare Crysis 1 with 2 the first was poorly coded and couldnt run on the best gpu's. If you have money to burn go ahead and grab a 5870 but your 4870 still has life

THats why i said buy a HD5870 if it's lesser than 240$, you dont understand english mate?

6950 1GB models are a lil cheaper, maybe put that into ur card equation? a quick search on the Egg puts 6950 1GB ~ $30-50 more than some 5870s. I would personally look at 6900 1GB models over a 1GB 5870 even if it meant saving up a bit more $$

whoa!! calm down kids lets keep this thread on topic:laugh:

Dude, I'm using a Sapphire 4870 1GB right now, and I OC'ed to 790/975 (from 750/900), and I get 40+ frames on Crysis 2 Multiplayer demo (Graphics set to Advanced, and around 30-35fps on Hardcore).

Honestly dude, you really don't need to upgrade. Save your money and get a new video card when it TRULY counts. I'm sure by the time the 7000 Series comes out, that's when you'll need a new card.

Every PC game now, video card maxes it out with an average of 40fps. This includes Dragon Age 2, Starcraft 2, League of Legends, and I guarantee that games like Guild Wars 2 and Mass Effect 3 (due for November) will still be maxed out on an average of 40fps! but still, NO LOWER than 30fps. But then again, it's all preference in terms of how much fps YOU want.

I'd rather just wait for a 7000 Series from Sapphire, but that's just me. The 4870 is still future proof for another 1-2 years.

I just did 4890 to 6950 now shader unlocked and it was a nice boost in performance.

Tho the rest of my system is up to date to push the card.

I just got a 5870 and love it!! great card all round. If you can afford a new 69XX go for that otherwise a 2nd hand 5870 would be a great little upg.

In saying that does your monitor support 1080? If you are gaming @ 1650 then I wouldn't bother upgrading the gfx card at all.

I went from a 4870 to a 6950 (flashed to a 6970) and the difference is awesome. If you can afford either a 6950 or GTX560 - then I'd highly recommend it.
