XFX Radeon 4890 "Hissing" or "Whinning"

I've noticed that my 4890 hisses whenever it's under load or even rendering a simple game of that 3D chess game that's on Vista. I've read that there's something called "whinning" but i'm not entirely sure if it's the same noise. I was wondering if this is normal and if someone else has the same sound. I've also read that it might just be the capacitor under load, can some one clerify?

My 4870s do it. its normal.

Its the capacitors I do believe, dont worry about it. :toast:

It's either capacitor whining or coil whining. The coil whining can be fixed by dropping some hot glue on it. But it's normal, nothing to really worry about. You'll notice it when your graphics card is rendering light loads in excess of xxx fps. At least that's the time I most notice it on my GTX260.

I have had many many cards do this - including 4870's, and they have all been absolutely A'OK.

However, it doesnt stop it super-duper pissing me off.

I am soooo happy that my current cards do'nt buzz, they are the first in a VERY long time not to. here is a short list of my recent cards which buzzed under idle and/or load.

GTX295, GTX260 core 216, 2x HD4870 (both buzzed), 8800GT, 9800GTX, 8800GTX... the list goes on.. my current cards (in specs) which do not buzz are non-reference, mite have something to do with it *shrug*

WTF? i remember reading some where that ati cards use digital voltage regs and DO NOT hiss or whine. my 9800gt doesnt though, but my motherboard does!

My 4850 is doing the same at high FPS. Also tried different PSU and it reduced the sound by half.

Yup, my Sapphire 4890 does it as well. Annoys the crap outta me sometimes. Until I put headphones on.

hehe... just turn up your speakers. that's what i do to not hear my Case Fans. although the noise isn't that bad.

Alot of threads on this currently, have people never heard of this before, it's been quite a potent problem in recent times. As mentioned, there are various solutions for the problem.

So much power going though it at high frequencies i do believe. Older stuff you will notice a wax like compound around a coil which solves this issue. All though they would not likly use this on v cards due to heat.

Caps I can see because of the "boiling". Anything thats solid like a coil would only squeal due to vibration. I could be wrong but if a coil squeaks it maybe lose. Ill give my dad a call tonight. He used to be a weapons avionics expert for years. If anyone would know it would be him......or W1zz :laugh:

i think lose plays a part of it and at the right frequency makes it move more\faster coursing it to be heard. Some times you'll see them with a like wax or hard plastic covering..

Like said above hot glue would solve it most likely but you would have to be careful that the hot glue does not melt the isolation on the wire plus would void the warranty.

Some transformers do it too.

I wear headphones most of the time and dont have my pc sitting on top of my head, so i dont notice it if it does, then again i might not have a reference card either.
