CM Storm Sirus-C Gaming Headset Review

Performance

The Sirus-C features a dual-driver setup in each ear cup, which is quite special. There is both a dedicated subwoofer and a full-range driver. When it comes to acoustic design, this one is a mine-field, especially when the drivers are in such close proximity to one another.

CM Storm did a lot to make sure the Sirus-C works with both consoles and PCs. The Sirus-C features a USB-powered headphone amplifier and sound card combination to ensure its double-driver setup performs as intended with all sound card solutions out there. Hook its mini-jack up to the headphone-out and insert the USB cable for console use and the USB sound card will only act as an amplifier, or a USB microphone for the PS4.

If you use the Sirus-C with a PC, you can run it with the USB plugged in as the in-line amplifier since it also features a sound card. The sound card CM Storm integrated into the cable is alright, but it is no better than any of the other in-line solutions that have come across our desk these past couple years. Such solutions are severely limited in terms of resolution and control, but can drive a headphone's volume to quite extreme levels.

Playing with the Sirus-C is a pleasant experience mostly because it is comfortable and its sound characteristics are somewhat dulled down. The treble is definitely not dominant and there is no sibilance of note. The midrange is not as detailed as that of other non-USB powered headsets from CM Storm, though. It seems as though the sound quality still takes quite a hit so long as a USB sound card is used since the Sirus-C sounds quite a bit better in console mode where the sound card is bypassed and nothing but the amplification is taken care of in its in-line box.

This type of headset is geared toward a niche crowd looking for instant plug-and-play capability on pretty much any setup, including consoles. If you just game on the PC, there are better and cheaper options out there, but that is really not the market CM Storm tried to get into with this model.
