A big thank you to Deepcool for supplying the review sample.

Deepcool has been around since 1996 and has since then grown to become the industry heavyweight they are today. In recent years, they have begun to focus on the enthusiast DIY market by delivering solid products, including cases, power supplies, heatsinks, fans, and all-in-one liquid coolers. You can also say that the company marches to the beat of their own drum, which proves especially true when you take into consideration their off-the-wall cases, like the Steam Castle and Quadstellar. These examples, among many others, showcase the company's ability to think outside the box with a willingness to try new things. For these reasons and many more, Deepcool continues to excel in the DIY PC market.

In today's review, I look at the Deepcool Gamer Storm Assassin III. This heavyweight heatsink might be able to trace its origin back to the original Assassin, but brings with it a host of changes compared to the original namesake I reviewed back in 2013. When it comes to heavyweight coolers, the Assassin III lives up to its name by weighing in at a massive 1464 g, but with that size comes potential for exceptional cooling performance as the cooler sports seven Ø6 mm heat pipes. Considering its massive size and dual 140 mm fans, I expect great things, so without further delay, let us take a closer look.

I would love to show you the pretty box, but Deepcool decided to ship my sample by slapping a label on the regular box, so the nice picture on the front is pretty well hidden, to say the least. I can at least tell you it is indeed the Assassin III because of the large bold print at the bottom. Things get better when we take a look at the left side, which has a mechanical drawing of the cooler along with its dimensions. Turning the box, the back is where the cooler's features and specifications are listed.

Another turn of the box nets us another quick badge-centric overview of the cooler's features along with a nice big packet containing shipping information. Finally, the top of the box has the Gamer Storm logo. Overall, I will say while the packing slips and labels ruin a nice-looking box, it did arrive relatively unscathed, which is, at least in my area, rather amazing.

After opening the box, I was greeted by a small cardboard box encasing one of the fans, while the actual heatsink was encased in foam packaging, which was quite a surprise. With that having been said, the box arrived relatively unscathed with only a minor dent on one corner, which left me quite impressed. While the way it shipped made my box shots pretty much useless, we can take away one thing here, and that is that your Deepcool Assassin III should arrive safe and sound unless someone with a forklift runs it over. Yes, I have had it happen with another product and it did not survive.

The mounting hardware is fairly straightforward with a universal backplate, backplate screws, standoffs, and Phillips-head nuts all being quite similar to other top tier-designs. Thankfully, due to the lack of ARGB lighting on this model, the wire mess that comes with it won't be an issue.
