In Win GreenMe 750 W Review

Introduction

I would like to thank Caseking.de & Overclockers UK for supplying the review sample.

In Win is among the very few companies with the ability and production line to build the Power Supply Units (PSUs) they sell themselves. This is not to be taken lightly since PSU manufacturing is pretty complex, and R&D departments also require very expensive equipment for a sophisticated production line. In Win will also have to produce a large enough number of units to sell them at a good, competitive price.

We already reviewed the 650 W GreenMe unit with our old set-up and found it to perform decently. Today, we will put on our new test bench the strongest member of the GreenMe line with a capacity of 750 W, but this unit is only equipped with two PCIe connectors, while PSUs of its capacity should at least have four. We can’t find a reason for a 750 W PSU to only have two PCIe connectors since a single VGA with two sockets or two with one simply won't use the power this unit can deliver. So, the GreenMe-750 starts the game significantly handicapped, which isn't good. Its other characteristics include a non-modular design, Bronze efficiency, a white coloring scheme, and four +12V rails. This PSU competes in both the mainstream and the middle categories, and we will check the unit to see if it it worthy of its nearly $100 price tag, which puts it into a highly competitive market segment.

Efficiency is Bronze and the unit is equipped with all popular and essential protection features but OTP (Over Temperature Protection)—a, in our opinion, very crucial protection feature. The GreeMe-750 isn't modular but Haswell ready because of the DC-DC converters it utilizes to generate the minor rails.

Cooling is handled by a 120 mm fan. Its double ball-bearings ensure a long lifespan but aren't as quiet as sleeve bearings, though they last much longer. At three years, the warranty is long enough for the PSU's category, and the price looks high considering its features.

Four 12V rails equip the PSU. Their combined power is unfortunately much lower than the total capacity of the PSU, which is strange if we take into account that the minor rails are generated by DC-DC converters which are fed by the +12V rail. The latter rail should, normally, deliver the maximum capacity of the unit alone. The 5VSB rail is, on the other hand, strong enough with 3 A maximum current output.

Cables & Connectors, Power Distribution

Native Cables
ATX connector (500mm)20+4 pin
4+4 pin EPS12V (500mm)1
6+2 pin PCIe (500mm)2
SATA (500mm+150mm+150mm)6
4 pin Molex (500mm+150mm+150mm) / FDD (+150mm)3 / 1

In Win made a major mistake here. They equipped the unit with two PCIe connectors only, rendering its capacity almost useless since its other connectors won't need all the power it can deliver. Lower capacity units with 500 W are equipped with two PCIe connectors, not 750 W ones. In Win should look into this and add two additional PCIe connectors in their next revision, which would allow this PSU to exploit its full capacity. All cables are also short, especially the main ATX and EPS ones. A couple more SATA and peripheral connectors would be very welcome. All connectors use 18AWG wires, which the ATX spec sets as the minimum gauge size.

Power Distribution
12V1ATX, Peripheral, SATA
12V2EPS
12V3PCIe1
12V4PCIe2

Power distribution is good because only the EPS connector is on 12V2 and the PCIe connectors are on 12V3 and 12V4.

Packaging

The unit comes in a carton box that is 100% recyclable. In green-colored font on the front are the series and model description, a scheme of the PSU, and the 80 Plus Bronze badge. The three year warranty icon resides next to the 80 Plus badge, and near the bottom-right corner, In Win states that the DC-DC converters utilize 105°C capacitors.

A label on this side gives the unit's model number and net weight, and its manufacturing country. This unit was manufactured in China.

A bit of text on the side states that In Win's primary goal while designing these units was to protect the environment, which is good to know. We are pretty sure that many upcoming buyers will appreciate In Win's Green policy.

At the rear of the package are a brief features description and the power specifications table. The label on top mentions that $1 will be donated to WWF for every GreenMe PSU sold. This is a nice move from In Win, and other companies will hopefully do the same in the future.
