Xigmatek Releases the Cobra D984 Processor Cooler

Xigmatek, best known with its RED SCORPION S1283, today announced the Cobra D984 - yet another direct heat-pipe CPU cooler with a name borrowed from an animal. Cobra D984 is a high end cooler build upon the company's "Fin connected to HDT base" and "H.D.T. Technology" where four 8mm heat-pipes are in direct contact with the CPU. The cooler measures 131 x 92 x 102mm (W x D x H), weights in 452 grams and features a 92mm PWM controlled fan with an aiflow of 39-54.6CFM and a noise level of 20-28dBA. The Xigmatek Cobra D984 offers support for Intel LGA775 and AMD AM2/754/939/940 sockets, but it is not compatible with the latest Core i7 LGA 1366. It can already be found for just under 30 Euro.

nice looking cooler, if its anything like there other coolers i ausme it will be great, its selling for $60 here in australia so thats a fairly decent price

i think it would be safe to think it would be better, why release a cooler that is worse then your current one, expecialy when that have one of the best 775 coolers around, why risk there reputation

I dont like air coolers that blow down onto the motherboard,surely its better to blow the hot air out of the rear case fan.

wolf2009is it going to be better than others ?
Doubtful, you can't do a push/pull and the heatsink is not as large, tubes are not as long etc.

it's lower profile, as there are still a lot of micro-atx cases and even a handful of mid-atx cases that wont fit an s1283

i have a vendetta 1 sitting still in the box here. bought it because my nzxt alpha won't fit 120mm coolers but this no doubt will fit. but like tigger says i don't like heatsinks that blow onto the mobo.

My thoughts exactly. Why blow hot air directly on top of the CPU? Maybe, its set to pull the air off the HS, even this would be increadibly inefficient. Puzzelled :confused:

if you have a side fan blowing cold air from outside, onto a heatsink like this, it can cool NB and other components around the CPU socket.

Guessing from model number, I doubt it will outperform HDT S1283

A side fan blowing cold air in wil cool the NB anyway right? What about those that dont have a side fan? This blows air directly onto the HS and out the bottom to the NB and RAM. In my simple minded thought it wouldn't cool as good as a HS that has air blowing from one side out from the other, like the s1283, True, or most others.

this is evidently not a performance unit (Though I would expect it to perform fairly well), with the non-U shape heatpipe setup which the high end performers use. This is a low profile cooler. It has only 4 heatpipes, compared to the higher end coolers which use effectively 6 (U shaped heatpipe = doubles the number).

I wouldnt expect too much from this cooler, but the size of it and the form factor makes it a unit that would be used in average systems that need extra cooling.

Well I have a s1283 and I can say the concept of Fin connected to HDT base is a really interesting concept! I doubt s1283 really needed to be that big..... why ? Because I already lapped it and my q6600 swaped as5 for MX-2 and sometimes when overclocking the Q6600 I get temps above 70C while the TOP of S1283 must be on ambient temperature, so it would be nice to see a upgraded s1283 to this concept.....
