Diablo IV has Attracted over 12 Million Players

During last week's Gamescom presentation of Diablo IV's upcoming Season of Blood (due October 17), Rod Fergusson—general manager of the franchise—announced that the game's user base had surpassed 12 million. He also proudly declared that the active population has spent around 1.3 billion hours playing the extremely popular, and evidently highly addictive, action RPG. Number crunchers estimate that this works out as 100+ hours (on average) per player. Blizzard Entertainment and Activision have chosen to not release official sales figures for Diablo IV, but Fergusson's disclosure provides us with a rough picture of how well the game has sold since launching on June 5 across multiple platforms. It should be noted that the fourth entry in the long-running series has not been released via game subscription platforms.

Blizzard Entertainment has started teasing the second season of new content: "At the behest of their dark master, a newly turned army of ravenous vampires has set their sights on Sanctuary. The master's sinister plot remains a shrouded mystery but their pursuit for the blood of innocents has caused an uproar. You must learn to hunt the hunter—your fate depends on it. Season of Blood will introduce a new Questline for you to uncover, Vampiric Powers to wield against their originators, 5 additional endgame bosses with the ability to target specific Unique and Uber Unique items as a drop, and more."

Blizzard President Denies that Diablo IV is Destined for an Xbox Game Pass Release

Blizzard Entertainment has once again refuted claims that their blockbuster (online only) action role-playing game, Diablo IV, is coming to Xbox Game Pass at some point in the future. PicPay, a Brazilian payment app, has been displaying adverts presenting Blizzard's latest ARPG as a current prospect on the Microsoft game subscription service. Blizzard boss Mike Ybarra was quick to shoot down this rumor as it hit news site—in a reply to Game Pass Tracker (on Twitter) he succinctly stated: "This is not happening." A couple of media outlets are now reporting that the Diablo IV advertising banners have been removed from the PicPay app.

Ybarra's career includes a twenty year stint at Microsoft—he was Corporate Vice President of Gaming prior to joining Blizzard Entertainment back in 2021. His former colleague—Xbox boss Phil Spencer—made clear (last September) his company's ambitions for several Acti-Blizz franchises, under conditions of a successful acquisition of the publishing group: "We intend to make Activision Blizzard's much-loved library of games - including Overwatch, Diablo and Call of Duty - available in Game Pass and to grow those gaming communities." Microsoft is inching closer to finalizing the proposed merger, so it will be interesting to see whether Blizzard will break with tradition when the new management steps in.

Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty DLC Pricing Revealed on GOG

Fans of CD Projekt Red's action role-playing Cyberpunk 2077 are looking forward to the release of extra content—the Polish gaming company has not set a firm launch date for its upcoming Phantom Liberty DLC campaign, but their own digital distribution platform - GOG.com - has aready spilled a few beans this week. Keen-eyed gamers noticed that a German language listing for the expansion had appeared (likely by mistake—it no longer exists) on GOG with a "BALD" tag—meaning that the DLC is due "soon." This information was captured in screenshots and quickly uploaded to the Cyberpunk subreddit.

Industry insiders are expecting CD Projekt Red to make a Phantom Liberty-related announcement at this year's (currently ongoing) Summer Game Fest, but media attention has already focused on the apparent pricing set for this piece of DLC. According to the screenshots Phantom Liberty will be available for a €29.99 pre-order price in Western Europe territories, which suggests a possible charge of around $30-35 for North American customers. Comparisons to The Witcher 3's post-release experience will inevitably crop up, and gamers will be questioning whether this expansion will offer good value for money—CD Projekt Red has indicated that this is their most expensive DLC undertaking in terms of development costs, but that has no bearing on how much content will exist within the final retail release. Recent company earnings calls have demonstrated that sales of their existing titles are slowing down, so CDP leadership will be looking forward to new product hitting the market soon-ish.

Two Diablo IV Expansions in Development at Blizzard

The Diablo franchise's general manager Rod Fergusson appeared on the Kinda Funny Xcast last week, only a few days before the fourth game's full launch - episode 140's interview segment focused on Blizzard's final preparations and post-game content (seasonal and possible DLC) calendar. Fergusson indicated that his team was very busy and will have more work to do: "As I sit here we're about to launch the main game, we're finishing up season one, we're working on season two, we're working on expansion one, we're kicking off expansion two…we're working on that now and we haven't even launched the game."

Blizzard Entertainment received much criticism for its slow and sparse trickle out of seasonal material for Diablo III, and Fergusson is keen to not repeat similar post-launch patterns with the latest entry in a very long running series (the first game debuted back in January 1997!). Diablo IV has been built with a live-service format in mind - thus allowing for greater and more substantial content to be delivered over seasonal time periods. Blizzard is likely aiming to compete with the likes of Bungie (Destiny 2) in terms of keeping an online game alive for a while - Fergusson outlines a key goal for his team: "We're going to be supporting Diablo 4 for years to come - (with) very rich seasons, much richer than we had in Diablo 3."

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom - 10 Million Units Sold in Three Days

Nintendo has proudly announced that the latest entry in its long running Legend of Zelda series (dating back to 1986) has already hit remarkable sales figures only a few days post the official launch date - Friday May 12. Yesterday's tweet from the company's North American branch stated: "The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has sold over 10 million copies worldwide in its first three days, becoming the fastest-selling game in the history of the Legend of Zelda series. Thanks to those already enjoying Link's latest adventure!" Nintendo has also revealed that their exclusive open world adventure was the fastest-selling game in Europe for the Switch platform. Various news outlets have also pointed out that Tears of the Kingdom is now the fastest-selling Nintendo game (on any system) in the EU trading region.

The preceding game - Breath of the Wild - was released on both Nintendo Switch and Wii U consoles back in 2017, and has since amassed close to a total of 30 million unit sales (referring to Statista data). According to a report published by GamesIndustry.biz Tears of the Kingdom has become 2023's biggest physical video-game launch in the United Kingdom. BBC UK News reached Piers Harding-Rolls (Research Director at Ampere Analysis) for comment - he said: "The huge opening sales of the latest Zelda places it amongst the biggest paid-for games ever released...With estimated gross sales of well over $600 million (£480 million), this title is comparable to some of the best-ever launches but falls a little short of the very biggest - for example, Grand Theft Auto V delivered over $1 billion in sales in its three-day launch window...Zelda has always been a beloved franchise for Nintendo fans but the success of the Switch console and the reinvention of the franchise into an open-world experience has transformed its appeal."

Bandai Namco Declares 20.5 Million Elden Ring Unit Sales

A recent Bandai Namco investor report has indicated that FromSoftware's hugely popular action action role-player has sold a total of 20.5 million units, which is highly impressive when you consider that the game launched last February. The publisher and developer's preceding Dark Souls series, as a whole, was reported to have sold 27 million copies in total by mid-2020. Bandai Namco states that uptake of its recently released games titles have not met company expectations, but FromSoftware's smash hit seems to be picking up the slack: "Repeat sales of existing titles such as Elden Ring were strong, especially overseas, worldwide sales reaching 20.5 million. New worldwide titles got off to slow starts, but smaller more medium-sized products moved steadily."

The report suggests that interest in Elden Ring is expected to dip: "We expect a pullback in repeat Elden Ring sales, which made a particularly large contribution to this previous year." The Elden Ring twitter account boasted about hitting the 20 million sales mark back in February 2023, so it can be assumed that a mere 500,000 units have been sold in the interim period between then and this month's investor report. Bandai Namco's document states that an Elden Ring DLC/expansion is in the works, but no further details are provided about the content or release time frame.

Diablo IV Developers Discuss Post-Launch Content

Over the last few months, we have communicated details about customization, Endgame offerings, moment-to-moment gameplay, and given players a first-hand taste of Sanctuary through Act I during our Early Access and Open Beta Weekends. But what about the post-launch experience, and how do we plan to increase the heat? We'll answer this question by explaining our approach to Seasons, Season Journeys, Battle Pass, and the Shop, and how they work in unison to enhance and diversify the robust campaign and Endgame offerings available to players at launch. There was also a Diablo IV Developer Update Livestream today (see below) that further expands on the aforementioned areas—give it a watch after reading this blog.

Stoking the Flames of Hell: Seasons
Seasons are quarterly releases that will add additional gameplay features, questlines (with new and old faces alike), Battle Passes, Legendary Items, class balance changes, quality-of-life improvements, and much more. Seasons will introduce fresh concepts and ideas into the world of Sanctuary, for all wanderers to enjoy while simultaneously iterating upon your baseline experience. Above all, we want Seasons to be celebratory moments; something to look forward to and enjoy with your friends and other members of the Diablo community. Season 1 will begin in mid to late July, and to embark on this next chapter, you must first complete the Campaign. Because of this, we recommend you begin your pursuit of Lilith in advance so you can jump into the first Season as soon as it becomes available.

Dragon Age: Dreadwolf Not Arriving Anytime Soon

Electronic Arts has not included Dragon Age: Dreadwolf in its projected release schedule for the ongoing financial year (2023 to 2024) - industry insiders have previously suggested that the fourth entry in the series was marked down for a later-in-2023 launch. EA's day old financial report details a number of already announced games within a rundown that ends in April 2024. The schedule includes the recently released Star Wars Jedi: Survivor game, as well as Immortal of Aveum, a Lord of the Rings mobile title, F1 23, Madden '24, Sports FC (a FIFA successor) and extra content for Apex Legend and Sims 4. A mystery pair of games are due sometime after April 2024 - a mainline EA Sports title and an unnamed racing sim.

An in-progress Skate sequel joins Dragon Age: Dreadwolf in the far off fields of mid-2024 or beyond. Bioware started to hint about a potential fourth game in late 2018 - with vague promotional material popping up during the autumn Game Awards event. The Edmonton, Canada-based development team has been quietly working on Dragon Age: Dreadwolf since then, with very little preview material issued in the interim - a non-gameplay teaser trailer was shown off way back in 2020. Gary McKay, general manager at BioWare, revealed last autumn that the game was fully playable from beginning to end, and recent information suggests that the Dreadwolf team has expanded in size to include Mass Effect series staffers. A former franchise and Bioware veteran, Mark Darrah, was added on as an external (expert) consultant on the project.

Nier: Automata Sold 7.5 Million Copies, Creator Evasive Over Possible Sequel

The official NieR Series Twitter account declared a sales milestone this week, and showed a great appreciation for its fanbase: "You'll be delighted to hear more than 7.5 million copies of NieR: Automata have been sold or shipped to date. Thank you for your love and support!" PlatinumGames' action role-playing game has accumulated very decent numbers over a six year period - NieR: Automata first arrived on PlayStation 4 and PC back in March of 2017. Thanks to highly favorable reviews from the computer game press, and word of mouth spread throughout the gaming community, the unlikely spin-off (from the Drakengard series) has become an enduring classic. It also helps that NieR: Automata broke free from being a PS4 and PC timed exclusive, and later on found its way onto the Xbox One and Nintendo Switch.

It is probably safe to assume that NieR: Automata has made a return on its production budget, so talk naturally turns to the prospects of a hypothetical third entry in the series. PlatinumGames and the game's creator, Yoko Taro, have remained very tight-lipped about a possible continuation. The normally eccentric video game director took a more straightforward approach when sharing good news about his game's healthy sales figures: "It seems that 7.5 million copies have been sold. It's so awesome that it makes me dizzy. I can't exceed this number for the rest of my life…I can only thank everyone who supported me!" Taro has taken a more evasive stance when dealing with questions regarding a third Nier title.
