Sony Announces DualSense Edge Wireless Controller

Today, we are thrilled to unveil the DualSense Edge wireless controller for PlayStation 5, the first-ever high-performance, ultra-customizable controller developed by Sony Interactive Entertainment. Designed to give you an edge in gameplay by allowing you to create custom controls, the DualSense Edge wireless controller invites you to craft your own unique gaming experience tailored to your playstyle.

You can make the DualSense Edge wireless controller uniquely yours by remapping or deactivating specific button inputs and fine-tuning your aim by adjusting stick sensitivity and dead zones (the distance your analog stick moves before it's recognized in a game). In addition, each trigger is adjustable with options to tailor travel distance and dead zones to your preference. For example, you can manually reduce travel distance of the triggers for faster inputs in competitive FPS games or reduce the dead zone for precise throttle control in racing games.

NGS Launches The Shrimp Gaming Keyboard

Give yourself the freedom to position your hands as you desire with this darn cute spacesaver. The Shrimp can enable some proper ergonomics. No more twisting your keyboard, hands and shoulders into awkward angles to find a feasible gaming position. The Shrimp can serve you both at home and on travels. At home it will wait patiently for when you hop into gaming.

The Shrimp is amazing for travelling. When normally travelling with a gaming laptop, you most likely carry a gaming mouse with you. You would probably not carry your keyboard along as it's way too big. You probably also don't much enjoy using the keyboard on your laptop. Tiny keys without proper feedback, hand positioned almost touching the laptop screen, yikes! The Shrimp is definitely something that would fit your backpack.

Overloop - condemn countless copies of yourself to death in a dystopian puzzle-platformer

Indie publisher Digerati is delighted to announce it's teaming up with developer Charge Games to bring clone sacrificing puzzle-platformer, Overloop, to PC, Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. Overloop will launch first on PC, arriving 26th August on Steam, Epic, GOG, Humble, and other storefronts. The console versions will follow in Q4 2022 (exact release date TBC). Created by Charge Games - a development duo of George Kobyakov (programmer, game design, artist) and Charles Bardin (narrative design, sound design) - Overloop is a light-hearted adventure set in a dark future where big brain scientists create a cloning gun - the Quantum Matter Replication Device - and their profit-hungry paymasters sell it to the masses, with disastrous consequences.

"We are a small team, but we are huge game fanatics. We're especially crazy about fun gameplay, atmosphere, and humor. And story. And music," explains Kobyakov. "Our goal was to successfully combine all these elements into a game, and we think we've achieved that with Overloop. It's the game we've always wanted to create and we can't wait to share it with the world!"

AMD Ryzen 7000 Series Processor Runs Phison PCIe 5.0 SSD with Micron 232-Layer NAND Flash

During this year's Flash Memory Summit, Phison, a company known for SSD controllers and now flash drives, demonstrated a system running AMD Ryzen 7000 series processors based on Zen 4 architecture. What is interesting about the shown specification is that the system was running an engineering sample of an upcoming Zen 4-based CPU with the latest storage technologies at impressive speeds. Using a Phison PS5026-E26 SSD controller, also called E26, the PCIe 5.0 SSD is powered by Micron's latest 232-layer TLC NAND flash. This new NAND technology will also bring greater densities to the market by promising higher endurance, higher read/write speeds, and better efficiency.

With AMD's upcoming AM5 platform, support for PCIe 5.0 SSDs is a welcome addition. And we today have some preliminary tests that show just how fast these SSDs can run. In CrystalDiskMark 8.0.4, it achieved over 10 GB/s in both read and write. We know that the E26 controller is capable of 12 GB/s speeds, so more fine-tuning is needed. Being an early sample, we expect final specifications to be better. The system is powered by an engineering sample of a six-core, twelve-threaded Zen 4 CPU running at unknown clocks, codenamed 100-000000593-20_Y. We can expect to see more of this technology once AMD's AM5 platform lands and Phison-powered SSDs hit the shelves in September.

Console Gaming Under Water: First Custom PS5 "Slim" Employs PC-like Watercooling System

YouTuber Matt Perks, known as DIY Perks on Google's video-sharing platform, has achieved the title of owning the world's first "PS5 Slim" console... by creating a custom watercooling system that's aimed at keeping the AMD-designed chip in check while rendering some of the most impressive games of this generation. Thanks to the custom watercooling unit, the PS5's usual 4-inch width was reduced to a mere inch - and due to improved operating temperatures, it's likely the hardware will see increased longevity. Barring any catastrophic leakage, of course.

Perks made use of a copper sheet to channel water over the PS5's APU, while also including thermal bridges that distributed the contained water throughout the consoles' SSD and power delivery subsystem. There is a secret to the consoles' slim profile, however, which should also answer one question you're holding on your mind: where, in that single inch frame, did he fit the pump and radiator for the embedded watercooling?

ASUS ROG Strix SQ7 Specifications Finally Revealed

Just under a month ago, ASUS posted a teaser for its first internal SSD, the ROG Strix SQ7 and now the company has finally released the full specs. It is indeed based around the 12 nm Phison E18 controller, as predicted by our Editor-In-Chief, something he spotted from the sneak peek picture. Although ASUS didn't specifically mention what kind of flash the drive is using, they kindly left the flash model number visible in one of its pictures of the drive. Although the full model name isn't visible, enough of it is visible to identify it as Micron's 176-layer TLC flash. The ROG Strix SQ7 also sports a DDR4 cache, as expected, although ASUS doesn't mention clock speeds.

ASUS claims the drive will deliver sequential read speeds of up to 7000 MB/s and write speeds of up to 6000 MB/s, which places the ROG Strix SQ7 in direct competition with several other Phison E18 based high-end drives from the likes of Kingston, MSI, Sabrent and others. Unfortunately, ASUS doesn't mention IOPS or random performance, although an unspecified "large" SLC cache is mentioned. Other features include TGC Opal and AES 256-bit encryption. ASUS also provides its own SSD dashboard, which of course is ROG branded, but looks like a skinned version of Phison's standard SSD dashboard, rather than something custom made. ASUS also provides a copy of NTI Backup Now EZ software and the drives appear to have a five year warranty. ASUS mentions PS5 compatibility outside of the PC space. No word on pricing or retail availability was provided and so far ASUS has only listed a 1 TB model.

ZADAK Announces TWSG4S PCIe Gen4 x4 SSD

here's another hot new ZADAK product on the market, and this one is going to take gamers one step beyond. It's the TWSG4S M.2 PCIe Gen4 x4 SSD, and it delivers read-write speeds that many Gen4 x4 SSDs can't - 7,400 and 7,000 MB/s, respectively. This is an ideal expansion SSD for new game consoles and PCs, giving players the chance to dominate their games. It ships with two powerful heatsinks in the box. One is made of ultra-thin graphene and the other of aluminium, and they reduce the operating temperatures by 15% and 35% respectively.

Either will fit inside the PS5, but notebooks will only permit the installation of the graphene heatsink. PC gamers will quickly see the advantages of this SSD, but it's also fully compliant with the technical requirements and physical dimensions of Sony's PS5, so console gamers will love it too. One of the most unique features of this product is the design. Sure, there's an aesthetic similarity that makes it the perfect partner for the PS5 in looks. But it also features a heat dissipation portal that's been crafted to suggest the dimensions of the PS5's DualSense controller. It's subtle, like the tiny PlayStation symbols that adorn the DualSense itself, but gamers will appreciate the difference.

Sony Announces Initial Variable Refresh Rate Support for PS5

Today, we're excited to announce that Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) support will start rolling out globally to PS5 players this week. On HDMI 2.1 VRR-compatible TVs and PC monitors, VRR dynamically syncs the refresh rate of the display to the PS5 console's graphical output. This enhances visual performance for PS5 games by minimizing or eliminating visual artifacts, such as frame pacing issues and screen tearing. Gameplay in many PS5 titles feels smoother as scenes render seamlessly, graphics look crisper, and input lag is reduced. Previously released PS5 games can be fully optimized for VRR through a game patch and future games may include VRR support at launch.

VRR will arrive globally through a PS5 console update over the next few days (make sure you are connected to the internet to receive the update). Once you've received the update, VRR will automatically be enabled for supported games if your PS5 console is connected to an HDMI 2.1 VRR-compatible TV or PC monitor. You can also turn it off under "Screen and Video" in system settings.

Sony Previews the PlayStation VR2

After a long wait, Sony has finally released the first pictures of its upcoming PlayStation VR2 headset and it clearly follows the design of the original, but looks sleeker, possibly due to the use of a lot more white plastic. The most obvious change is the inclusion of four cameras in the headset itself, much like what we've seen in VR headsets from other manufacturers, which are used for tracking. The PS VR2 should also feature eye tracking, although it seems like Sony is still negotiating with it suppliers as to which technology will be used. It still connects via a cable to the PS5 console, but it seems like Sony has upgraded the displays significantly, as the company claims 4K HDR support, without going into any further details.

Sony talked a lot about the design of the hardware and about how the new headset and controllers were designed to "become an attractive part of your living room decor" while also keeping the gamer immersed in the VR games they're playing, "to the point where you almost forget you are using a headset or controller". As such, ergonomics have apparently played a key role in developing the PlayStation VR2, to make sure it's comfortable to use, no matter the shape or size of the player's head. The only new hardware features mentioned include a lens adjustment dial and a new motor for haptic feedback. For those in hotter climates, Sony has also added a new air vent, which might also be handy for those wearing glasses. Unlike HTC, it doesn't seem like Sony has gone for a fan assisted vent. Sony also announced that PS VR2 headsets are already with game developers and that the company will be sharing more details about the hardware in the future.

Sony Announces PlayStation VR2 Specs and Horizon VR: Call of the Mountain Game

Sony today has confirmed the first specs for its upcoming update of the original PlayStation VR hardware. The PlayStation VR2, as it's (predictably) named, will feature an entirely new display array consisting of dual OLED panels (2000 x 2040 per eye), enabling 4K HDR content to be directly beamed into the users' retinas. The panels enable a 110º field of view and up to 120 Hz refresh rates. The PS VR2 headset will now feature inside-out tracking, which means there's no need for external accessories: four cameras placed on the headset itself will take care of hand and positional tracking, with some help from the new Sense handheld controllers (which integrate the haptic feedback and adaptive triggers of the PS5 DualSense controller).

While wireless VR technologies have become more common, the PlayStation VR2 will require a single, USB Type-C physical connection with the PS5 console - and it's unlikely it will ever properly work outside Sony's ecosystem. This is partly due to Sony listing a number of new sensory technologies that are being integrated into its VR2 headset such as eye tracking, headset feedback, and 3D Audio (processed via the company's Tempest technology). Sony describes the eye tracking implementation as serving as a new possible input for game experiences, whilst also enabling technologies such as foveated rendering to enable higher performance to be extracted from the PS5 hardware. Allying foveated rendering and eye-tracking should bring about a much-needed breakthrough for VR performance - theoretically, the system can apply Variable Rate Shading (VRS)-like technologies according to the user's eye position, reducing rendering quality in line with the less detailed captures of humans' peripheral vision compared to the pupil's central focus point.

ViewSonic Launches 28-inch 150 Hz 4K Monitor with PS5 Support

ViewSonic's new VX2882-4KP seems to be the 4K gaming monitor for those looking for a no-nonsense design, as it could be mistaken for a Dell office monitor. That said, not everyone is keen on the over the top designs some gaming monitors of late have featured, so it's nice to see something a bit more normal here, especially for those that use their PC for more than just gaming.

Unfortunately the only stand-out spec is the 150 Hz refresh rate, which lands somewhere between most 144 Hz 4K monitors and the two or three that can do 160 Hz. It's not an overclock setting in this case, as it's the official refresh rate of the VX2882-4KP. ViewSonic went for an IPS panel here, although it only has a brightness of 300 nits, which is not as impressive as much of its competition, neither is the HDR10 rating.
