GeForce GTX 560 called GTX 560 Ti and releases Jan 25th

About a decade ago when programmable shaders were new, NVIDIA identified its first graphics processors that used them under the GeForce 3 series and 4 series with the "Ti" marker (for example, GeForce 4 Ti 4800), to demarcate them from mainstream "MX" series, which lacked them (eg. GeForce 4 MX 440). Exactly a decade later, there are faint indications that NVIDIA is reintroducing the Ti marker. This was found out on close examination of a leaked 266.44 GeForce driver, which recognized an unreleased NVIDIA GPU as GeForce GTX 560 Ti. This baffles us. To begin with, this doesn't seem like a notebook GPU, second, we don't know of anything big in works at NVIDIA. One plausible explanation we can come up with is that NVIDIA is using "Ti" to simply make its GTX 560 SKU "look" presentable on paper, especially since the SKU may face competition from Radeon HD 6950 1 GB the moment it's released.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 Ti is being introduced to restore competitiveness to NVIDIA in the sub-$270 "performance" segment, after it was depleted by AMD's introduction of the Radeon HD 6870 and Radeon HD 6850. With GTX 560 seeming imminent, AMD is preparing two new SKUs, Radeon HD 6950 1GB and HD 6970 1GB, which, coupled with cost-effective board designs, are expected to significantly drive down prices, restoring AMD's competitiveness in the crucial market segment. The GeForce GTX 560 Ti is based on new GF114 silicon, features 384 CUDA, a 256-bit GDDR5 memory interface, and core clock speeds of 820 MHz. The new SKU is slated for January 25th.

The GeForce4 MX DID lack shaders. It was nothing more than a modified GeForce2 MX.

Seems weird to think that after all these years, I could again have an nVidia Ti series card with an AMD FX processor. I remember one of my older machines with an AMD FX-55 and TI-4800 AGP 8x.

Sad we can't have a good nVidia chipset to complement, but I'm sure nVidia won't mind re-re-branding the 780a chipset for us...

They already did, the 980a. I'm using it right now. Pirifirm's Speccy identifies it as a 780a.

The 980 will be bulldozer, and thus FX, incompatible though, right?

That's why we'll need a 1080a. But wait! Nvidia doesn't like adding extra numbers, or we'd have an 12800GTX right now instead of a GTX580. So, I guess they'll call it the a18 instead? Or the a28, perhaps, seeing as we had no Geforce GTX1** cards.

I've owned at least four TI cards to date. Two from GF3 series and two from GF4 series.

GF3:
PNY GeForce3 TI500
ASUS GeForce3 TI500

GF4:
Jaton 3DForce4 Ti4200
BFG Tech GeForce4 TI4600

The ASUS GeForce3 TI500 was by far the most memorable part. It had software to monitor voltages of VRAM and other components via ASUS SmartDoctor and this was in 2001/2002. The fan died within few months though.

Great to see awesome branding resurrected.

It doesn't make sense for them to be bringing back the Ti for a lower high end board. Shouldn't NV have done this for the 580/etc? Unless they don't think those are worthy of the title. But still from the last info I saw on the GF114, its just an improved 104. Higher clock speed but it didn't seem like a night and day difference from the GF104 its based on.

Not that I'm against the Ti, just hope NV uses it right and puts it only on boards worthy of it.

You're missing the GeForce2 Ti.

EDIT: Sorry, missed the "I've owned" part...

I use to have one of those, I was always happy with it's performance.

If this card uses 1x6pin or 2x6pin and manages to use roughly the same amount of power as a 1GB GTX 460 it would be a great seller. Not only could this run on something like a 500w psu, it will be available for the regulars in the PC market, which make up a large bulk. Good move Nvidia :D Now we have to see the price and performance figures!! :)

And then we just need a HD6990 PRO that can be unlocked to XTPE. And the XL, and do not forget about the awesome GTO!

Yes...about NVIDIA card, and their ridiculous plan to resurrect the Ti name.

wait.......

History always repeat itself. So that's where NVIDIA's idea comes from.

I had a MX420, a PCI one even (less VRAM bandwidth than AGP version). Used it in my server and later on sold it on eBay for more than I paid. :D MX4xx GPU's had their place, considering back in 2002 when there were still tons of 3Dfx cards in circulation, a MX4xx GPU was a cheap way for those people with such hardware to get the latests API support for not too much cash, albeit with pretty poor performance at high-res.

at least they chose a cool name to ressurrect, and one from a great series of cards, I loved my Leadtek Ti4400.

better than calling this the GTX560 FX. no oldschool nvidia fan would have one then.
