Battle Royale? More Like Profit Royale: Fortnite Reportedly Tops $1 billion in Revenue

A report from analyst firm Superdata has put in perspective the craze regarding Battle Royale-type games. Fortnite, developed by EPIC, is now estimated to have earned more than $1 billion in revenue since its launch last year. And it all seems to be going uphill - the game earned some $304 million in May alone solely on its in-game microtransactions, a 4% increase over the still impressive $296 million figure in April. Consider that EPIC only added the Battle Royale game mode last September, and the voracious pace of revenue increase becomes obvious - just the months of May and April account for more than half of the $1 billion being reported here.

Make no mistake: like in all things, there will be an inevitable tumble in popularity and revenue as the game ages, even if it has just now entered its fifth season. However, the rhythm at which funds are flowing into EPIC's coffers will surely enable an even bigger, more impressive experience come Fortnite's successor, which you can bet will be ready to pick up the slack once revenue slows down. It becomes hard not to justify developers' options towards developing these kinds of games over others - it really does seem to be this is where most money's at.

GamerNerves@RyneSmith The gunplay doesn't feel tight, I don't like the idea of building walls for cover, the controls feel little bit too floaty and there is no real atmosphere or any background lore. These are the reasons why I personally don't enjoy Fortnite. I didn't like PUBG either and top of the repetative and horribly paced core gameplay there are still so many technical issues that really hamper the experience in that title. Currently I'm playing and liking Quake Champions which is a very different kind of game compared to Fortnite. I still really like the concept of Battle Royale, but there is no game yet that has done it well enough for my taste.

EDIT. edit edit edit
My comment wasn't directed at you so I apologize if you felt that way. I respect your opinion, it's just people that say "ugh this is trash" without really giving it a try based on graphics or skins.

I have yet to play quake champions, maybe I will give it a go.

I just don't see how it made so much money..... I mean, I play Rocket League like 4-5 days out of the week, but I don't see any need to spend money on it. Maybe I'm a cheap bastard. I payed for the game, and I also paid $5 for some keys to unlock crates, but then i felt like I was getting screwed pretty much instantly--so I stopped.

I watched a few youtube video's on it and it looks really dumb is it a battle royal FPS or is it EQ landmark cause I can't tell. I have no intentions of even downloading and installing it based on the video because it looks terrible and really don't get the hype around it one bit. It looks more oddball designed than the completely sporadic and random bolt sizes on a import vehicle.

Don't spend money on microtransactions, only on real content. Cosmetics and such are cheap and lazy way to make money and should not be supported in any way. Some people say that they are good, since they can make a game free-to-play, but they are only supporting the values of the companies behind this and the value of making money easy.

I really like Rocket League and have played it over 200 hours on PC, but I have not bought anything inside the game. I'm already 25 years old and can compare items and their values in a store, online or live, but the real audience of these cosmetics items are usually kids and very young people who are not mature enough to decide sensibly how to spend their money. Their parents can put some limited amount of money on their gaming account and then they waste the money on these virtual items, not that kids would not have wasted money in the history on trash before, but so it goes and it's the moral of this business. My advice is: do not support microtransactions at all! Pay for your games and buy content that is creative and adds to the experience.

On top of this nonsense the younglings buy those crates/lootboxes which are pure gambling and addictive.

Damn younglings..... Other people thank God that I don't have kids yet. I tend to agree with them. I'd be a savage bastard to them, making them do chores and respect elders......
