Alienware Targets New Frontiers with Brand New X-Series Gaming Laptops

Some search far and wide for the "X factor" of mobile PC gaming -- the unique and significant quality that makes a product exceptional. Today, with the launch of X-Series we're proud to present Alienware's thinnest 15" and 17" gaming laptops, introducing the first-ever Alienware x15 and Alienware x17. With breakthrough system-level engineering controls to let you play the latest and greatest game titles with confidence, it boasts patent-pending cooling technologies, the latest performance components, framerate-splitting displays and Legend 2.0 design features. What's more, our collaboration with Intel helped us achieve one of the thinnest form factors ever seen in a PC of this caliber.
When developing the X-Series, we wanted to provide our community with more than just your everyday thin gaming laptop. We wanted to challenge the status quo and create something that redefines the ultimate mobile gaming experience. This was easier said than done due to the physical limitations and mechanical challenges that come with a thin laptop, but our team was able to overcome the challenge with tenacity, extra espresso shots and several engineering breakthroughs.

The result is not only our thinnest gaming laptops to date. Our new x15 is the world's most powerful sub-16 mm 15" gaming laptop. So, what did it take to get to this auspicious debut?

If You Can't Take the Heat…
Let's begin with heat, the enemy of all gamers. Advancement in thermal technologies within mobile form factors continues to be the #1 request from our customers. The cooling solutions found on the market today present real dilemmas to PC builders and tradeoffs are always being made. To properly address these thermal limitations, we needed to look inwards and reinvent the game ourselves. In turn, we discovered new materials and several new engineering methods, including five patent-pending, exclusive to Alienware. We're proud of the work, and even more of the results.

We've engineered the next evolution of our Alienware Cryo-Tech cooling technology which introduces Element 311, an exclusive thermal interface material (TIM) concocted from Encapsulated Gallium-Silicone liquid metal compound. This material exists between the CPU and their thermal elements to disperse heat and mitigate spikes in core temperatures from affecting the system's performance. Unlike what's currently available on the market, X-Series delivers up to a 25% improvement in thermal resistance advantage with Element 312, but in order to dive into those patent-pending innovations that'll require level 10 clearance to disclose.

Along with HyperEfficient Voltage Regulation for extended performance during long hours of gameplay, the X-Series offers more heat dissipation and gaming performance. The new exclusive Alienware Quad Fan design blows air efficiently through the system, chassis and internal hotspots, designed to help keep your gaming engines cool wherever you go. Finally, our patent-pending Smart Fan control technology utilizes AI to enable improved application performance as each fan independently spins-up, slows-down or remains steady according to various sensors strategically placed around core system components. Pretty cool, huh?

The culmination of these technologies allows gamers to enjoy their favorite games at high performance within an exceptionally thin form factor, while maintaining an impressive level of quiet and coolness.

Fly Like a Butterfly, Sting Like a Bee
At a first glance you'll see that a lot is new with the X-Series design. These laptops feature an artfully crafted and evolved, Alienware Legend 2.0 design identity. While this new identity, featuring Dark Core, first-appeared on our recently announced Alienware m15 R5/R6 gaming laptops, X-Series enhances this second-gen iteration to unlock high-performance in ultra-thin forms.

Visually, it's easy to be allured by the mesmerizing, single, continuous loop of bold stadium lighting, illuminating the rear hexagon venting pattern. Or the contour of smooth and gentle angles that produce purity of form. But it's not just about the glamour appeal, the new X-Series is designed in parity with engineering to maximize thermal benefits. We've purposefully placed vents on the top and base of X-Series notebooks around the quad fan design to help amplify airflow rate and boost thermal performance.

Not everyone has your requirements for a laptop. I live on the road and want the biggest screen, thinnest, most powerful, longest battery life, and cheapest device I can find.
The first laptop I owned was a fat ASUS and I will never buy that size again.
I own a razer since 2016 and now looking at a Zephyrus. Thin better not go anywhere.

That's YOU. I used to live on the go as well. I required a larger screen with desktop level performance. Portability was important, but battery life was NOT. I agree with Caring1, an ultra thin profile isn't important when it comes to gaming and high performance tasks.

I've had very powerful laptops over the past 10 years. I can tell that you that thin and powerful dont mix, if you want thinness, you will have to settle for underpowered GPUs even if that laptop is equipped with a 3080.

I agree with this. On paper, the specs appear to be very powerful. In practice, you are running at throttled performance due to lack of cooling. You can add dozens of snaking heat pipes, or throw in a vapor chamber to make it sound sexy, but the truth is that the fans and heatsinks are too small. At some point, the heatsink will soak up so much heat that the network of heatpipes to aid in heat transfer will have nowhere to transfer that heat. Its funny that even a 75W card from say Nvidia gets a chunkier heatsink than what we find on a laptop GPU/ CPU that could draw more power at peak performance.

To me, most current high end laptops are pointless, especially for the asking price. I rather buy a slim laptop for work and leisure, and a proper gaming console/ PC for games. Even a simple RTX 3060/ RX 6700 XT will easily do better than any gaming laptop since desktop variants have more power and better cooling, and won't easily run into CPU bottleneck if the CPU is sufficiently cooled.

I have a custom loop pc with a 3090. It does the big work in games when I'm at home. When I have to live on the road I want something thin and also light so as to be the opposite of heavy and bulky. I want a big battery for the times I don't have a wall socket. I want it at the cheapest possible price, because that's obvious. I want something powerful so as to run the games in the best quality possible within the constraints of a thin and light laptop.

Not trying to be snarky, but it seems like everyone is responding to my initial comment and basically saying an opinion is wrong.

I don't understand the sentiments in this thread. Lots of people understand the drawbacks of thin laptops. There are fat laptops for people that want that. I prefer the thin and lights. That's all I was trying to say.

That's cool. And a lot of people agree with you. That's not the problem that everyone is discussing however. Thin & light is a wonderful advancement in mobile technology. It is not however condusive to providing enough physical space to allow for high end parts to perform at the maximum as being thin means less room for cooling. The point being that "thin & light" does not equal high performance. You get one or the other, not both. Those of us who are saying we prefer the performance understand that it comes with the cost of being a larger and heavier system.

Now let's take the systems of focus in the article above. They have performance parts installed in them. Yet these parts can NEVER operate at their full potential due to the form-factor if the "thin & light" profile. They might get 80% or 90% the way there, but never the maximum. There's just room for the cooling require for max performance level nor room for the power delivery to match. So at the end of the day, with this form-factor you get a system with premium parts that can never offer it owner the best performance. If even 5mm of space clearance was added to the bottom chassis and better heatsink+fans options were installed, with no other changes, each of those systems could then be able to perform either at or closer to their respective best. But as is, it's a no go..

Good for them to have the guts to launch these sort of hardware - I will be properly impressed if they can dissipate 110w of heat in ambient temps of >30c.
