Summary of first iPhone review impressions

Since the first iPhone reviews are in, Engadget.com made an interesting list of features which the iPhone has ... or has not:
  • The mobile version of OS X or whatever it is the iPhone runs takes up 700MB of the device's capacity. Damn son!
  • There's no way to cut, copy, or paste text! WHOA! Big, big mistake.
  • No A2DP support. That, friends, is such a huge bummer right there.
  • Sorry, music can't be used as a ringtone -- even if it's just a raw MP3. No additional ringtones will be sold at launch.
  • On a PC the iPhone syncs with Outlook for calendars AND addresses! Noice.
  • It supports Exchange in some capacity, according to Walt, but he doesn't exactly say how.

  • Pogue again confirms document file reading -- but not editing -- for PDF, Word, and Excel (only).
  • Adobe Flash support is officially out. It's just not in the browser. Neither is there any other kind of embedded video support. Sorry everybody, that's that.
  • It will take snaps, but won't record video. How can Apple love YouTube as much as it does and not realize cellphone-shot movies make up a sizeable chunk of the crazy crap you find on there?
  • Oh, and no MMS. And sorry, no voice dialing, either.
  • Contact groups can't be emailed as contact lists.
  • Apple sez between 300-400 charges the iPhone will lose battery capacity -- you'll send it in and get the cell replaced for a fee. Meh. We knew this would be the case, but still, meh.
  • Apple can (and supposedly will) be rolling out periodic updates -- no surprise there.
  • Battery life is, somehow, almost as mind-blowingly good as Apple claims for calls, music, and movies.
  • As we suspected, users are prompted with lists of WiFi networks if you're not nearby a trusted hotspot. We've seen this on other phones, and we're afraid this would get friggin annoying.
  • It's said to be very scratch resistant. The facade both front and rear apparently just doesn't pick up marring like regular iPods do.
  • Voice quality is said to be good -- not great.

.... I just can't bring myself to get one. OR stay with AT&T for that matter...

Edit: Oh wait, I just read one of the most hilarious things on that website:
How much will it cost?

LIke you care. As you already know, it'll be twice as expensive as other companies/ products with comparable features. But that doesn't matter, does it? No matter how much it costs, you'll feel special because you've bought an Apple product. If you forget how special you are, just look at your credit card statement.
Hahahah Apple certainly is special

Also, the phone is on the older 2.5G, rather than the high speed 3G.

There is simply no logical reason to justify this. Forced 2-year contract, forced AT&T, $60 a month for a mere 450 minutes, $600 starting price, non-replaceable battery, last-gen speed, difficult interface... need I go on?

There is simply nothing good about this whatsoever. I can't believe so many people are eating the hype without question. It's not like there is an absence of viable alternatives that don't bear Apple's seal. :shadedshu

I cringe to think of the horror that would manifest itself if one were to say, drop the thing and watch the uncovered screen shatter...

I plan on shorting apple after the end of the holiday in the next few days because you just named everything right there, then add a 5year exclusive contract w/ AT&T. So after your 2 year agreement is up, you can continue w/ AT&T or take your 600 overpriced/fragile copy of a zune :). Its good for apple because their niche market always forgets the flops they produce! It will take several revisions before this is even worth using as a phone...Its a phone, but from reviews I heard today it actually doesnt work very well in its primary role...but that might be AT&T, which your stuck to for 5 years!

My phone has 1GB memory (on a stick which came with it), an mp3 player, plays a few movie files and it only cost £40.

News just in: Apple blows.

The sad thing is that the rich Apple whores will buy this piece of crap in their droves, thus giving Apple more money to produce more crap.

well, personally, if it weren't for the slightly ridiculous price tag, and a $60/month plan, I'd love one. Widescreen movie player, digital audio, wifi, "camera", multi-touch sensitive, and it's a phone. It's almost the all-in-one I've been waiting for. Simplistic interface, barely any buttons, stylish looks, unlike the tiny keyboard touting smart phones. Eventually you'll be able to buy something like this without a plan, and by that time I hope to see numerous improvements.

Also, not having been mentioned in a long while, it's not really widescreen. it's some demented aspect ratio between 4:3 and 16:9.
and the internet is sloooow.
and 2 grand over 2 years for 450 minutes/month and 200 txt/month just blows. hard.
no noteworthy word on whether or not touch-sensitive keyboards suck... i suppose thats mostly a personal taste.
Also, the position-sensitive stuff sounds cool, but sounds retarded to me; like how it locks in some positions, unlocks in others etc... not everybody talks standing up. lots of people talk lying down. then again, who actually talks on a cellphone any more these days? i'm just a crazy old loon to do that.

i thought it had a proximity sensor, so that when you do talk, the screen dims anyway....why would it matter what position the screen was in if you're talking anyway?

While not a terribly extensive stress test, its not a fragile device.

So.. your phone can...

Cut, copy and paste text?
Support Exchange?
EDIT word, excel and PDF files? Let alone, OPEN?
Email contact groups? Notice this is GROUPS, not CONTACTS. if you don't know the difference, GTFO.

Interesting. What cheap ass phone can do all of this while remaining as featureful as an iPhone? My Razr can't do any of that, and it wasn't cheap.

I really don't understand how they managed to get so many bullets out of what really are, 4 basic downfalls. And they really aren't even all that bad. Edit PDF's? How often do you do that? Not much. If you are, do you really need to be doing it on your phone?

I'm impressed though, an apple thread and theres nothing but shitting down apples neck for releasing a new product.
Someone posts a microsoft thread, everyone does the same.

What do people really want around here?
