NVIDIA Planning More from the G92

After the success of the new GeForce 8800 GT, it looks like NVIDIA could have another card based on the same G92 core planned for later this year. Dubbed the new 8800 GTS (yes, I know it's confusing - hopefully that will change) the new G92 card will feature 128 shader units instead of the 112 on the 8800 GT, which would suggest they could well exist on current 8800 GT cards and have been disabled for marketing or yield purposes. As it features a 256-bit memory interface it will go back to the more common 512MB and 1024MB memory blocks, and given how impressively the 8800 GT performs it's expected it may be able to surpass NVIDIA's 8800 GTX and possibly even the Ultra - NVIDIA's two best cards. The card is expected to launch just after AMD's Radeon HD 3800, and could well spoil the show for AMD if it performs as well as the speculation suggests.

newconroerIndeed, and because things are so...questionable at the moment, I couldn't bring myself to plonk down for a GT. They seem to have a nice price tag in comparison...but in comparison to what exactly? :)

If they had just sight 'alright, we've got a new architecture "G92" and we're going to use that to rerelease the GTS and GTX as well as a new upper end card the "GT."' Then that seems entirely logical. Basically saying, we want to keep customers, and keep them happy, as well as keep them at the top of their game while holding off ATi until we release the 9800s.

I'm hoping this G80 revised GTS never makes it to the table, and they just make the G92 GTS and GTX and leave it at that.
yep totally agree , and the reason i said COnfusing ....... but at thsi point i did not wanna hold on to my dear hd 2900 xt because sooner and very soon it will loose its value and for me a gettin a GT was economically smarty move and gettign my money i spent on the hd 2900 xt when it came out =)

Yes, it is economically more beneficial, but if a new GTS emerges this month or next... I pity some people ;/

niko084I just hope they really are getting good at knocking the power requirements down...
Everyone needs to make more power efficient hardware. At this rate, we are going to need PSU's that require more power than teh American power standard. (1800 watts) And here we have 1200 and 1300 watt power supplies quickly becoming the norm for high end computers.

Just because of my 850 watt PSU for my rig, the electric bill has increased greatly over the past 3 months. Its just insane and more power efficient hardware needs to be put into production quickly.

FreedomEclipseim already confused & i am yet again....

after releasing a 8800 GT a few weeks ago, now they are releasing another 8800GTS which i now dub thee 'Big Daddy Edition' of all 8800GTS's?!?!?!
they have got to cut down with the names & new models which have very little difference from the old versions
they ought to call it the 3800gt to really make sure we are always confused. plus ati would chit lol.

well im still partial to the EVGA's - grab 2 of them then make use of EVGA's 'step up' program after 6months after theyve decided on how many new GTS's they want to bring into the world.

so its all good unless Nvidia release something completely new & improved for less or the same price as i refuse to go into the 'extreme' graphics room. so 2x mid range in SLI is as far as I will go

thats funny because more than half the people who dont know what kind and how many watts in a power supply they need...so they end up thinking they need a 1k psu for like 2x 8800 sli, a quad core, and a few hard drives....
and its hilarious to me because that setup that i just mentioned right there probably consumes a 400-500w MAX on full load (might even be lower)

It doesn't matter how much wattage PSU has got, it only uses what the computer uses. This is of course if we think all PSUs are just as efficient. If you buy a 600W PSU to a system that uses max 400-500W, use it a year or two and you'll start to get crashes. With 80% efficiency that is 480W of usable power and PSU wear down losing some of their power reserves in time.

On the other hand if you have reserves left in that PSU, like buy a 850W PSU for that system, not only will it run cooler and quieter, it will also work after 2 years with the same system.

I had a 460W very cheap PSU previously and it ran super hot on load (but quiet). It was 30A on 12V, so it worked nice. Now with my Zalman the sides of the PSU are almost cold to touch. Better efficiency does wonders and I'm set for any future upgrades. Yes 500W version would have been sufficient, but 10€/15$ save didn't seem worth it and I'm glad I got the beefier version.

SK-1Are you talking trading your current card for the 8800GT or the yet to be released "Big Daddy-8800GTS?
yeah for the GTS which "should outperform the 8800GTX and possibly Ultra"
