AMD and American India Foundation Collaborate to Connect Children to the Internet

AMD and the American India Foundation (AIF), today announced the launch of a new 50x15 Learning Lab at the Government High School, Doddanakundi in Bangalore. The new Learning Lab is equipped with AMD Athlon Dual-Core processor-based Microsoft IQ PCs and will provide affordable Internet access to more than 200 school children.

The Learning Lab is part of the 50x15 Initiative, a global initiative founded by AMD to connect 50 percent of the world's population to the Internet by 2015. Built on the premise that no single entity can accomplish this ambitious goal alone, the initiative unites private, public and government partners. In addition to providing affordable Internet access and computing capability directly to the local students, the experiences gained from all 50x15 Learning Lab deployments around the world are presented in printable capsules at www.50x15.com. This will help others to leverage the experience and replicate similar successful business models that help foster digital inclusion. "It is incumbent upon IT leaders of the world to help effect positive change in our global community," said Susan Moore, director, Government Affairs, AMD. "The fundamental goal of the 50x15 initiative is to make Internet access -- and the opportunities that access creates -- available to a much broader segment of our world's population. With Internet penetration still not at the desired levels in India, this Learning Lab will open the doors to the digital world for students at these schools and will provide real-world examples for other programs to replicate." "Creating the right conditions as part of an integrated ecosystem is the key to creating educational, social, and economic opportunities for students," said Alok Ohrie, managing director, AMD India. "Our local AMD India employees are truly excited about creating these local conditions and an ecosystem for students in Bangalore as part of the global 50x15 Initiative." "AIF's Digital Equalizer program is focused on preparing under privileged students to participate in and benefit from the digital economy. We are very proud to partner with AMD's 50x15 Initiative and further our collective goals - empowering children through an enriched education, access to technology, and career possibilities," said AIF President Ms. Lata Krishnan. The new Learning Lab joins more than 25 50x15 Learning Labs that have been created worldwide and they extend AMD's global commitment to expanding education opportunities in the communities in which it operates. AMD began operation in India in April 2001 with the launch of AMD Far East Ltd and currently employs approximately 700 people across several facilities in Bangalore and Hyderabad. About AMD Advanced Micro Devices is a leading global provider of innovative processing solutions in the computing, graphics and consumer electronics markets. AMD is dedicated to driving open innovation, choice and industry growth by delivering superior customer-centric solutions that empower consumers and businesses worldwide.
