Black Mesa: Source Official Trailer Released

On the 17th of November, Valve Software celebrated the 10th anniversary of the game that pretty-much made the company what it is, Half Life. Valve used the simple 3D first-person shooter genre, focused heavily on the gameplay elements to churn out an awesome game of its time. With the introduction of the Source game engine, Valve made additions to the franchise with Half Life 2 (HL2), HL2: Episode 1 and HL2: Episode 2.

While the company itself could be working on another addition, an independent community-driven group sought to commemorate the 10th anniversary, by remaking the original Half Life using the Source engine. This is not to be confused with the simple Source-engine port Valve created in the form of Half Life: Source. The game is to be called Black Mesa: Source, which is comes in the form of a Half Life 2 modification. The levels, characters, graphics and physics get a refresh to the latest Source has to offer. The game is set for release in 2009. The Black Mesa: Source team has released its official trailer that has been posted on YouTube here. To know more about Black Mesa: Source, visit its home page.

Just goes to show what can happen when you're actually cool to your community like Valve/Steam is.

This is something I'd pay for -- I loved playing the original Half-life back in the day.

I played HL2 before I tried HL1 and couldn't get myself to play through the first. This changes everything. The game looks absolutely stunning.

Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes!!!!!! I don't know how many times I've played through Half-life but it doesn't matter. I've been wating for Black Mesa Source for quite a while and to finally see a release date (month, year, whatever) makes me insanely happy. Half-life and Starcraft are the games I've spent the most time since I started gaming. I'm so excited to see this amount of effort put into one of the greatest games I've ever played. Can't wait!!!!

@erocker: you're missing out buddy. No matter how dated the original's graphics may be, the environments are just as claustrophobic and the enemies just as startling as in the sequel. However, I won't deny that experiencing Half-Life in high-def is an experience I'm eagerly awaiting. :D

Fro those who are getting impatient waiting for Black Mesa, I recommend you try the MINERVA: Metastasis mod, if you haven't already. It feels like a part of the Half-Life universe, and that's probably why Valve hired the lead developer.

Awesome eh? I've been following this "mod" almost since the beginning and it rocks. I knew it was awesome, screenshots were cool and all, but the trailer blew my mind. The professionalism of the devs is incredible, and so is the organization. How have they been able to make such an ambitious project, without a producer and etc is out of my understanding. It does tell a lot about what can be done with some will and dedication and the game screams to have a Soul, something most recent games lack badly.

IMO part of the success is in the BM comunnity, a good community there, I encourage you guys to make a trip there. It's really interesting, with a lot of interaction with the devs and there are many fun community projects to help a bit in the development (kinda). I even took part in one (Props that will spawn out of crates) and I was 3rd, so you will see some props made by me in the game.

I'm preparing my entry for another one ("human and alien gibs") and my brother who is an actor (not famous. yet?) will probably make some people/aliens dying sounds.

As I said take a look at the community, it's really worth it, very kind and cool peope like in TPU. I sincerely don't know why I never tried to interest some people to go there before and viceversa.

FREE completely FREE. Only requirement is a Source game, so that you can have Source Base SDK, I think. And the Source Base SDK of course. :)

man Half life 1 is like the grand daddy of the FPS genre, no I haven't forgotton about doom, wolfenstein, and quake. But seriously this game did a lot of awesome things and also a bunch of mods came from it, lets not forget all the expansions like opposing force. I wish they would bring back adrian shepard.

I am definately looking forward to this mod, I got a feeling the dev team may get hired onto valve.

This is such great news! I had a feeling that this mod had died. Been following it since the early days and really hoped it would come through. Looks like it is. Loved Half-Life 1 probably gonna love this too! 2009 should be a good year for Half-Life fans with this and HL2 episode 3.

Finally! This trailer is awesome, about time HL1 gets refaced. Best thing though is that it is most likely free since its a game mod, excluding Garry's Mod.
