Run on Windows 7 Upgrade Deal in Europe

Today marked the first day of the Windows 7 upgrade deal for most european countries. Much like the US variant, customers in the EU were able to preorder Windows 7 Home Premium for 50 € or UK Pounds. According to the Hannoversche Allgemeine Newspaper the entire stock of the new operating system has been sold out within hours in the german speaking region. Large etailers like Amazon.de only had 1500 from the 10000 pieces of the german version - which sold out 7 minutes after the start at 9:00 AM - while others only managed to get 500 or less. Other german etailers like Alternate, OTTO, Neckermann managed to hold out a tad bit longer, but all of their servers - including the ones from Amazon Germany where brought to their knees so that many potential buyers missed out on the deal. Amazon UK on the other hand allowed pre-orders for about 6 hours until listing the item out of stock. Overall, most etailers all over Europe are sold out, while some traditional stores may have some left. It should be noted, that Microsoft actually planned to offer this deal from July 15th until August 9th.

I think the main reason for this, is the with Windows 7 E you actually get the full retail version, so its like a double discount.

I was up at midnight frantically refreshing, and got myself a copy pre-ordered from play, within seconds of it going up :D

i dunno why ppl rush to buy a new OS tbh ,just encourages MS to make new ones more often lol

not like a new OS is actually needed is it,just makes things hard work getting apps/games to run on all the different OS's.
They should try fixing the existing ones rather than getting yet another one out.

IF MS was smart (yeah I know) they would extend the offer in both regions (US, Europe, etc) so more people can obtain a copy of it. The idea is to gain better market penetration this time around. Specially when a lot of businesses are still treating Win7 like Vista (staying away from it).

:wtf:

People have rushed out for Win 7 E, due to the massive discount, its currently at a thrid of the full retail price which is said to take effect in January.

Could I just ask if you have tried windows 7 at all? Beta or RC?

This is how things evolve, there is only so much you can do to old software before its better to start again.

Its like saying you dont want the next game in the series. :ohwell:

iirc it uses a new kernel and its impossible to keep compatibility with updates when doing such major work "under the hood" the only way it can be done is with a new OS.

And I dont think £49.99 is greedy at all from MS, its £10 more than a new 360 game, but you get ALOT more :D

Is this an upgrade? or can you do a fresh install with this, without installing a legit copy of vista and then upgrading to Windows7.

And if this is the upgrade, is there any down points of upgrading as you are installing an operating system through an operating system...or is that wrong?

Europe version is full retail (without IE). You can't upgrade even if you wanted, fresh install needed (and a browser of some sort in memory stick).

Read Windows 7 sold more pre-ordes in 8 hours than Vista did in 17 weeks. Probably why Microsoft planned this being open so long.

It would be just silly of them not to add more copies available. People are buying legit versions of their OS, can't be bad for business.

Price was tempting, once I figured out you could get it delivered here too. Good that they ran out, I have no need for update and I'd rather have an upgrade :)

It's always better to do a clean install. IE fresh partition, formatted hard drive. You can do this with both a full version or upgrade version. With the upgrade version it should ask you to to insert Vista/XP during install process. You do as instructed and a second or 2 later it will ask for the install disc (Win7). I said "should" because it's not confirmed just yet. I am going by previous upgrade versions.

Ok thanks for clearing that up :)
As much as I want a new gfx card, I think it would make sense to buy W7 now, as it is a lot cheaper than later on when I know I wont be able to afford it.

Is this just to say sales were higher on release day ?.. Like when people got win95 it was a hit and the win98 came and was not so.

How i see it is so they can say we sold so many more millions than than we did vista and if it plays out right even win98 \ XP.

The bit what bothers me the most they say UPGRADE and over the years i learned to stay away from OS upgrades even more so of MS.

FYI, I've just ordered my copy from Currys.co.uk (of all places!), they won't take payment till its dispatched so that'll give you time to get the readies together...

P.S Amazon have put the price up to £75!!!

No it isn't, that's how it's spelt in German. Just not translated it properly. Unless you knew that and was pointing out that it indeed wasn't translated... ah I don't know.

Oh and Alex made a very good point, I mean it is very cheap for the initial launch. I would happily pay for Windows 7, and £49.99 is just a very acceptable deal.

To the person who said they should just fix Vista, is it even possible to strip the Kernal on Vista without effect any personal files?
