nicehash has power modes so you can set to low power mode (~100W) and mine away at half performance without the heat and degradation. Seems like a good compromise.
(I undervolt my cards anyway, so i havent bothered with that much)

yeah that's right i could have with claymores but i was Greedy , lol

to be honest i couldn't care less about the ad or ads , i didn't notice until i saw this thread , still interesting reading all the comments it brings in but

i was mining about 4 years ago with 1 R9 290x living at work in a portable room so i didn't have to pay for power but it slowly dissolved the card running at 100% 24/7. Point is , e waste with a whole farm must be huge
I was mining years ago with many cards, I always cut the power using MSI afterburner.

Great thoughts here, thanks everyone. I have to say I agree with everything you wrote, as impossible as that may sound, and thanks for the civilized discussion.

We will definitely limit colors for the wallpaper in the future, for all advertisers, as that's what the overwhelming majority has an issue with. Also I'll be stricter with the design language. Our wallpapers usually look great, because I keep nagging advertisers to fix even small things. This time I was slacking and thought "it's fine".

I've always hated "in your face ads", that's why we don't have any popups, autoplay videos or similar shit. I'm also working hard with advertisers to mostly show static ads, or with only minimal animation. We have respect for your privacy, there's no tracking cookies, no external networks, we don't share any data (that's why no cookie notice either). We sell all our ads directly, which gives us more control, cuts out the middle-man and makes content more relevant to you. During COVID this has been making a huge difference for us. While ads on YT, FB, Google were just stopped with one click, we actually have good relations with advertisers, who kept their campaigns going, also because we are looking for long-term relationships, not just the quick buck. Business is better than ever, traffic and income almost doubled in one year.

Still, operating a site as big as TPU costs serious money, and people have to eat, too. (out of all the gazillion websites on the planet, only ~5000 are bigger than TPU https://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/techpowerup.com)

On the topic of mining, yes I know it's controversial, you can see that even here in this thread. I believe that Nicehash is mining for the small guys, who already have gaming hardware and are just trying to make a buck, without messing around too much. I also had the thought that it could help some people make money to pay for their next GPU. Sure, there's big miners on Nicehash, too, I still don't think these guys are who steal the cards from us. Actually (at least for 2020, and I have no data on that), I don't think mining has been the big problem for these new launches. Supply was simply too low, and demand too high. Graphics cards (and GPU chips) are produced in batches, it's not constant production with daily output like in a car factory. So once your production run has ended, and you've sold the chips you have, it will take a long long time before you can get more from the foundry.

@Vya Domus made a great point that Nicehash could be the gateway drug into mining because it lowers the barrier of entry, I didn't think of that, possibly true.

@Vayra86 Patreon is absolutely not required, it's something purely optional for you to express support for TPU and get something in return. The income from Patreon is not even 1% of our total, financially it's a waste of time, yet I keep it going, because I feel like the benefits are interesting for the hardcore TPUers, and the coding is already part of the site engine anyway (coding time I invested is still bigger than the combined income of all Patreon so far). Just one wallpaper will bring in more in one 48h run than all Patreon for multiple years.

Personally I don't mine, my electricity costs 30 eurocents per kWh. Like many I think it's a waste of energy, but it's not my place to tell you what to do with your hardware or money. I also don't invest in Bitcoin or similar, it's more of a gamble than proper investing (imo) @ZenZimZaliben

@Dragokar once again, I'm sorry for the warning that you got for posting in the technical issues thread. technically the mods were correct for enforcing "on topic", that's why I moved all the discussion to this thread and removed your warnings

@ThrashZone dont bother "clicking the ad just to support us", nearly all of our advertising is CPM, so paid by the impression/view, not by the click or signup action. Of course, if something interests you, click it, we do measure banner performance, and it's useful feedback to our advertisers too (all data is anonymized)

@yotano211 Our wallpapers run for 48 hours, efficiency goes down anyway after a while

@W1zzard , if you weren't a dirty euro*, I would vote for you for POTUS.

*I don't really think all Euros are dirty, but I am pretty sure a few of you play in the mud. :)

There it is folks, someone who put honest thought in and it didn't work out.

Hi,
Clearly if they want to throw down a number like 8.usd a day they need an real image of a 3090 beit off the web or something because it shows on their calculator as 8.96 usd a day
3080 is 7.33 usd
,
,
,
Modern sure isn't very specific but 8.usd a day sure is so yes accuracy would be nice :)

Running this website is gamble.

Hi,
Seeing even nicehash calculator say 3080 is 7.33 usd a day I call someone is lying lol

dunno dude i am just saying what i am seeing.. just bear in mind nicehash is for reasons unknown to me running neoscrypt on my 3080.. i think this is showing better returns..

my 2080ti would be showing maybe 5 dollars per day mining etherium so i recom a 3080 would be maybe 80% better.. this would be around 8 dollars a day..

i dont take offense easily but just mind who you are accusing of lying please..

I am getting about $12 CAD a day with two RTX 3070's. I dunno about that amount on 3080. But hey, if you are, awesome! I may buy a 3080 from a guy over in Taiwan.

Hi,
I said someone is lying beit you or nicehash calculator Harsh but something is way off
They do say more or less on the number but you're saying their calculator is about 50% off so that is hard to believe that nicehash would be that far off.

Edit that is more than a 3090 makes lol

the nicehash calculator isnt measuring the returns mining neoscypt.. its measuring the current returns mining etherium which is the common one... also etherium returns have dropped quite a bit (50% or so) since the price went down.. a couple of weeks back they were much higher..

if the etherium price goes back up the returns will get higher.. they vary so will the nicehash calculator results. it isnt lying you just dont know how it works..

as to why nicehash is running neoscript on my 3080 i havnt a clue.. i had never heard of it until i installed my 3080 a couple of days back.. but being as 11 dollars a day seems pretty good i aint gonna worry too much.. i was expecting 8 maybe 9 dollars at current price levels.. i was also expecting nicehash to mine etherium why the f-ck it isnt i havnt a clue..

the hash rate of a 3080 can be anywhere between 84 and 99 m/hs.. depending how the card is tuned.. i would also guess the nicehash calculator is basing its returns on a 3080 at stock settings..

and just to educate you a bit more.. a properly tuned 3080 will give better returns than a stock 3090.. :)

I am getting about $12 CAD a day with two RTX 3070's. I dunno about that amount on 3080. But hey, if you are, awesome! I may buy a 3080 from a guy over in Taiwan.
Death and taxes. Its inevitable.

Hi,
You're correct I do not know, I was seriously looking at doing it on two machines but at barely 5.usd a day for both wasn't near worth it.
I did assume the calculator did go by current market price though

Lots of ways to run nicehash for sure, usb stick/ windows 10/ linux
Windows seems the easiest to oc the gpu for sure think others were saying earlier they didn't max the oc to not eat up electric
Nicehash does have a gaming mode that I did too figure it was at least in the calculator estimate too.

Maybe report their estimator is way off seeing it's a new add just seems unlikely to myself anyway their loosing miners with low balls.
