X79 and/or rampage IV OC'ing thread for those of us still left....

Anyone able to get Doom Dark Ages running on their X79 system? I don't buy/play lots of new games every year, but I can play Helldivers 2 just fine with my 4930k, with an RTX 3070. Doom Dark Ages is the first game where it seems like maybe my old CPU/mobo is finally just 'too old'. On the other hand, it looks like a lot of people are having crash issues with it, and there are a lot of variables at play, so MAYBE it's not the CPU? it could be any number of things, I suppose.

However, I did notice that they state NVMe as a minimum requirement, and my SSDs are all SATA. However again, I've seen people claiming to run it just fine on SATA SSDs. I think it's cool that my computer (besides the 3070) is really old, and can still do everything I want to do with it, just fine, including any games I threw at it, up until now. I'd like to be able to squeeze another couple of years out of this thing, honestly. I'm not sure I'll be interested in too many more triple A games like Doom, in the near future. So if I could just get this game working I'd be all set.

Anyone get it running on an x79?
Kinda related to your question but my 3960x feels slower than my 2697v2 playing nfs unbound With 3060ti.

that's interesting. a couple of years ago i tried to upgrade to a 1680 v2 in my ASRock X79 Extreme4-M but apparently it's incompatible with the bios or motherboard itself.

on some level i think they are using Doom to try to push new hardware, in a kind of forced way. the raytracing being always on just seems unnecessary to me, as well as the NVMe requirement.

No chance … CPU is missing Instruction features. There are many not supported Games meanwhile. And I guess there will be more in the future.

is there a list somewhere? which instructions? i can play helldivers 2, which came out last year. i won't doubt that there may be other games i couldn't play, which are out now, but which ones? doom dark ages is the first i've personally seen. are you just assuming or do you actually know?

do you think i could play CyberPunk 2077?

He is talking nonsense X79 supports AVX so it's should not be any problems for games 'tho it does not support AVX2 but that's not necessary anyway you probably have some other issue and most likely GPU drivers or maybe your System is missing something if you didn't update system for a long time...I know that some games do not want to start if you don't have certain windows version remember that recently could not start War Thunder just because I did not update windows for a while so there is that......

You can‘t start StarWarsOutlaws for example … or Uncharted … or Indiana Jones … verified with 1680v2 and a 6750xt on up to date Win11. I guess its the same with Doom. Just search if the Game Engine uses AVX2 and you will know.

Ok then I apologize as I didn't use X79 for more than a year now and before that I never heard for game that requires AVX2 support as mandatory.....anyway that seems a bit odd and lazy on a Dev side to required AVX2 because I believe that could be easily patched and fixed to work also on CPU's that support AVX only most likely it will affect the game performance but I am pretty sure it could work.........

I swapped out my Rampage IV extreme & 1680v2 last december Mainly because of the AVX2 ONLY games coming out lately. Sometimes it gets patched. Most times it gets ignored. I knew it was going to be annoying in the future so now i'm running Z790, DDR5 with an i5 13600KF. Very happy with it.

Been using the Rampage IV since 2012. Started with a 3820, then 3930k and since 2021 1680v2. Its been a great reliable platform for me and lots of overclocking fun.
Even though the onboard audio stopped working years ago. I always used an usb audio interface anyway.

well, i really liked the idea of keeping this PC for another few years, but it's starting to look like just because of AVX2 which came out i guess a year after X79 or something like that, i'm going to have to spend a few thousand dollars to get a new PC. at least i had a good run! 3820, to 4930k. it still performs nicely for web browsing and MOST games up till now, so i might find some other use for it. maybe a media center or something. or maybe i'll just part it out and sell it off towards a new system. no idea what i'll get except i may actually go for that current AMD processor i've been seeing people say is the best for gaming right now. can't remember which one but i'll figure something out! i had one of those Q6600's before this, and before that I had some amd in the early/mid 2000s but i'd never be able to remember which one. so i might hop over to amd again.
