Windows 11 Retires Blue in Favor of the Black Screen of Death

will tweak my Windows install to spite MS even more. Taking control of my OS from their grubby hands one step at a time.

The biggest tweak everyone should be doing is disabling telemetry & Windows Defender. Installing patches manually should be the only way forward as letting WU do its thing breaks stuff.

correction; not Defender, it's Windows Update. I will never disable Defender as it's the only known good free anti-virus that actually works.

Moose Miffins. Just no. There plenty of quality security suites, a few that are arguably better than microsoft defender crap.

Comodo being one of them and my personal fav. However, after recent testing I have give the nod to McAffee and Norton. As downright wrong and icky as it feels to say that, both have really kicked up the quality.

Avast's always been among the best "free" AV's out there, for me ESET's the best overall since 2008/09 or so!
You're not wrong, they still are;

They are all basically the same for most practical applications, as confirmed by the tests, with a very rare exception (what the fuck is a G data). You can use whatever the hell you want, essentially, but Defender is absolutely fine for 99.9% of users and it’s already there. PAYING for AV as a singular non-enterprise consumer in 2025 though is probably the most silly waste of money one can imagine.

Except that defender is more intrusive than some people want. Many of the options on offer in that list are less intrusive and still very effective. I have tested this personally to see what the differences are. Defender is good, but it's a pain if you don't want it doing things behind your back and not complaining about it.

Some - yes. Most won’t ever see anything from Defender except for the “weekly background scan ran” notification and, maybe, the “yo you sure you wanna run this unsigned .exe?” prompt. Which are both perfectly acceptable levels of “intrusion” in my books. But sure, some people are extra-paranoid and are free to run any alternative AV, why not. But in terms of actual security effectiveness it’s probably on the placebo side of things.

Not true. Avira, Comodo and Norton offer levels of control and system management that defender does not provide and microsoft would never provide the user in a simple UI.

Placebo they are not. Much better than defender they are.
(Yes, channeling Yoda...)

However, I just noticed what thread we're in and we're meandering from topic, so I'll digress from here..
