CompUSA is set to close its remaining 103 shops after it was sold to private equity firm Special Equity on Friday. This should mean some great bargains for consumers buying PC equipment, as CompUSA will need to sell all of its remaining stock before it closes its stores after the holiday period. There were signs that CompUSA was in trouble earlier this year when it closed half its stores in March, and now it looks as though increasing pressure from firms such as Best Buy and Circuit City has driven it out of business.

Damn. That was the only store around here that had all those things not worth paying shipping on. This sucks.

yea this realty sucks as best buy has nothing compared to comp usa.
comp usa i could actually go in and buy a nice motherboard at a decent price and find and they carried alot of enthusiast pc stuff that wasn't generic crap like best buy

My $0.02 is that the growing online marketplace killed them. Most folks w/ little computer knowledge will generally go to bestbuy, circuitcity, etc., and....most folks w/ some computer knowledge learn pretty quickly its generally much easier and chearper to get it online. There are times when you want to physically examine what you're getting (flat panel monitors), or, as Wile E said, when you need to pick up something small that isn't worth paying shipping on (or you need it NOW) but that's not enough business to keep a chain open.

....I say no great loss, b/c the one closest to me (that's already closed) was always too high on everything, anyway. I suspect I'm not the only one w/ that experience.

I'm going to miss the ability to pick up a CPU/LCS/Case whenever I feel like it.

Of course, I never really did take advantage of the opportunity, because they cost like 2-3x as much as Newegg . Seriously though, I loved getting a high-quality case in there without paying $20 shipping.

Oh man i will miss m CompUSA here in Huntsville Alabama:( It was always a good store. I was always surprised though that it never went out of business. Because you see in one of the main parts of huntsville we have a road called University Drive quite a long stretch of road where we have all kinds of restraunts and shops on both sides. Well you would always have to pass Best Buy first before reaching CompUSA. Ill miss them dearly. They are the ones that I bought my lappy from ($400 off I might add:D) and the ones who gave out free software on their 23rd birthday that I bought up. I hope to go there soon and get some great deals and tell the employees that I was just starting to get to know that I will miss them dearly.

Also heres to hoping that the employees that worked for CompUSA will be found better jobs at other electronics chains.:rockout:

We all respected you CompUSA and we always will :respect::respect:

R.I.P:rockout::rockout:

Sorry for that long statement but I felt it was needed to give CompUSA its respect that it so deserved.

P.S. CompUSA's website wasnt that bad to shop at guys

Im with you there effmaster, but you might wanna put in how CompUSA is located in the Target Babys R US super center and halfway hidden. Its a gem of a place but they were generally a bit high on their stuff. However, they had everything you could possibly want from them. Im sure gonna go and rack up on some great things. I can see me getting that Kosmos (199.99 or 149.99 after rebate now) for alot less. While Im sad to see them go ((got me a router for 14 bucks with shipping last year) Im glad for the business to go ona major selling spree. I think Effmaster and I will be making out like bandits. HUNTSVILLE, AL FTW!!!!!

Wow I never expected you to know so much about Huntsville Alabama. Are you really living in Gurley right now:roll::roll:?
And dont forget it was stationed right next to Petsmart, lol and that Wal Mart was just before you hit CompUSA as well. Im shocked they lasted as long as they did though.

On a side not WarEagle is right now is the time to get my christmas shopping done there. This was already going to be a small christmas for me this year since I will be having less money to spend, than I originally planned to:banghead:

What really screwed over CompUSA in the end I think was the mail in rebates. Best Buy nailed the coffin pretty good with that tactic. though most rebates from CompUSA did have instant savings involved with them as well sometimes., Just like the Logitech VX Revolution mouse that I bought from them a few months ago, same with my Logitech X-540 speakers.

God damn it.....my fav store in town....Best Buy sucks, and I don't have a Frys..

i loved this place ever since they changed to a no restocking fee return policy. Yet another choice taken away...

CompUSA is having a 4GB of DDR2 SDRAM for only $99:D

Also a 8400GS for only $60
Wow a DX10 video card for so little money im excited, I wouldnt be too concerned that it cant be overclocked much though, this is still a decent video card with pretty decent performance

Edit: And I just found an HD DVD laptop from Toshiba for under $1000. And this is $450 instant savings not Mail in rebates either.

NOOOOO!!! :banghead: :banghead:

 That was the only store I shopped at locally, because I absolutely refuse to support the Best Buy and Circuit City megalopomonopolises - because those two chains have forced the closure of every single independent PC shop in this region, which has made top notch and higher end hardware a nightmare to find . . .

. . . and now that CompUSA is closing?!! :banghead:

Screw BB and CC. I guess I'll just have to keep a credit card on hand for on-line purchases now.

They closed EVERY store in Northern Virginia around the Capital Beltway in the first wave a year ago, yet they had two or three stores still open that were in weird locations.

They should go straight to online retail rather than close up shop. Most the expenses for employees and rent would make up a good chunk of their losses.

I agree with that. They have too devout a following to give up their online retail.

Down here in Hampton Roads, we've only had two - one on the southside and one on the peninsula. It was a drive to either one, but I was much more willing to go there than to CC or BB.

I can only think of one that used to be around the east Detroit area, and to get to it I'd have to drive past two best buys and a circuit city, but I did anyway. Got my dreamcast and x-box there, half a dozen etc. computer parts and case accessories. Unfortunately, they closed out a little over a year ago.

I think the last thing I bought from best buy was GTA:VC with a gift card I had, and my Logitech Thumball mouse, which is soooo badly worn I'm surprised it still works...

I'll miss compUSA. Instead we have all these crappy Computer Builder Warehouse places. Horrible prices, but excellent service from what I've heard.

RIP CompUSA

The one on Jefferson Ave. was the last one I went to. I'll be down in the NN area next week so I might stop by to see what's left. Maybe they will have a monitor for dirt cheap.

does anybody know which stores are being closed? theres one where i live, but i havnt seen or heard of any "blow out" type sales,

I think that they are all officially closing down now right after the holidays mate sorry:(

I dont have ANY computer stores in my area so I am forced to buy everything online.

They used to have great manager specials from time to time. I got my Stacker 830 for $180 on sale there, back when the cheapest you could find it online was $250.

That sucks, they always had really good deals. I will be watching for the going out of business sales. Also, if you have one that has a dumpster, check away, that baby will be chock FULL of thrown away goodies.

Last thing that I bought from em was my Geforce FX 5900 lol.

The closest CompUsa to me is about 25min away, but I go there as opposed to the nearby shops whenever I need anything. I got a laptop for my wife there not too long ago, and when the lcd started to fritz out they fixed it for free.

Oh yeah dude, I totally live in Gurley. Which is why all my shopping and stuff is done in huntsville. Not to mention, I like work right down the road from that place on Technology drive ::FTW!!!:: I dont celebrate Christmas or anything, but I do like to get me some goodies when they have sales going on. I look forward to this one. Not to mention, thanks JC316 for letting us know about the Dumpster, if Im not mistaken, they have one around back, though its hard as hell to get to. THE MIR didnt really hurt them, they had most of their stuff as Instant AND THEN MIR. Some stuff was a bit high for the pc enthusiast. With Giga parts down the way at Backyard Burgers shopping center heading to Madison, they had some of the same stuff there for a lot less, or they could get it for cheaper. CUSA had all kinds of laptops and computers, but they also had a kick ass selection of cheap ass TVs and Home Entertainment centers. Not to mention all kinds of accessories for hooking things up, cheap routers (Dlink, Linksys, Netgear even the Wireless N standards) and every accessory I think is out for the game systems. Im gonna miss them, but I look to make out good. Seems like a paycheck or two might go to that.
