Im going to purchase a new monitor, but first i need to upgrade my graphics card, what card would suit a 32" HD tv ?

4870 or 4890?

assuming both would have 1 gigabytes of VRAM.
I am also restricted by budget, but i can afford a 4890, but not sure if i should invest in one. Would a 4870 cover all my gaming needs on my new Tv? ;D

Thanks :)

4890 is obviously faster and I'd say get that if you can afford it.

Not fast enough to justify the price. A 4870 or 4850 is a far better deal. However I would wait man. 5000 series is right around the corner. Whatever you buy now you WILL regret it.

so your saying, wait and save my money because the 4800 series cards will go down in price because of the 5000 series cards are coming out?

It's a tough call.

Cheap high performance 4890 or a better (but not sure by how much) DX11 5xxx.

ive had both 4870 & 4890 and used to run them on my 24" screen at 1920X1200
The 4890 is much smoother and has consistently higher framerates allowing me to max out AA and AF in most games.
Id definately without a doubt go for the 4890 if i had to do it all over again for the resolution i play

I don't expect the HD5xxx series until late 09 (think: Dec) to early 2010. Any sooner, and we would've started hearing rumors from ATI about now (the tech slides, "leaked" info, tooting their own horn, etc.).

I very much doubt there will be any DX11 cards on the market for WIN7's release.

Anyhow - the 4890 does offer some performance gains over a 4870 . . . but, IMHO, not enough to justify the higher cost - especially considering how much the 4870s have come down in price. For $50 more than you'd spend on one 4890, you could have two 4870s in crossfire, and be running a lot stronger than you would with a single 4890.

I have a 1GB 4870 and a 32" HDTV - gaming on it is pretty fun, but as a monitor is too big for me. I can hit stock 4890 speeds on my card, however. If you can hold out for a little bit longer, you'll be able to pick one up cheap.

Oh yeah, my card has, DVI, VGA, HDMI and DisplayPort. Check my specs for the card.

It is my understanding that the 4870 and 4890 reduction in price (which was recent) is a direct result of the next gen release. If you are on a budget and understand that you are buying a video card now when next gen is a few months away get the 4890. I've seen several sales for the 4890 so if you see one jump on it.

of course the 4890 is better but, taking into account that the resolution of the display you're going to buy (1366 x 768), I think it's better for you to save your money and buy a 4870 now or wait for the 5000 series to come out and take advantege of the price drops on 4800 series and buy a 4890 at a much better price.
