In a move than could very well be interpreted as exchanging one problem for another, Advanced Micro Devices has decided to stop focusing so much on the PC business and get its act closer together on the mobile front.

The Bulldozer disaster, as it is known in some circles, must have persuaded AMD's leadership that the PC side of their business wasn't flying very well and far anymore.


Though everyone was expecting much from 8-core processors, the performance was, in the end, well lower than some of AMD's own previous-generation chips.

Whether because of this or something else, it was reported that Advanced Micro Devices has chosen to distance itself from its competition with Intel.

That is to say, it will focus less on processors for PCs and pay more attention to the mobile market.

As such, it will probably start to customize its Fusion platform in such a way as to create tablet and smartphone chips.

"We're at an inflection point," said AMD spokesman Mike Silverman, according to a Mercury News report. "We will all need to let go of the old 'AMD versus Intel' mindset, because it won't be about that anymore."

If anything, 2011, with more than half a year of lacking an actual CEO, was a clear symptom that Advanced Micro Devices had to do something, and soon.

The company has a new leader now and, sure enough, the man took some fairly drastic measures, and that includes more than this latest change in direction, as well as a branded RAM project.

The workforce also suffered, especially the PR and marketing departments AMD axed large portions of each as part of its plan to cut total worldwide employee count by 10%).

The complicated thing about the focus on mobile is that ARM already has that well enough in hand, and NVIDIA just launched the Kal-El too. AMD may just be exchanging one headache for another with this.

This can not be good for consumers. If this is true, my crystal ball tells me we will soon see Intel chips with stellar performance and stellar price, and mainstream chips with stellar prices as well. :(

See, just a couple of days ago, I said the same thing(AMD is not in direct competition with Intel). Not for the same reasons, but because in my perspective, AMD buys their market share from Intel, anyway, due to how x86 liscencing works.

Now, of course, AMD sold off Qualcomm in 2009, so I really gotta question the mobile directive, but at the same time, I think bulldozer cores can be tweaked into low-power land quite easily, provided silicon is up to snuff.

Fine by me, my FX 6100 plays every game without issues. My rig just needs a 6990. Someone buy me one.

EDIT: But I think it makes kinda sense. If by mobile they mean the CPU+GPU stuff they have.

You guys think so black and white, there is no way AMD is going to stop production on Server and Mainstream chips. The article said they just arent going to compete with intel anymore. They are going to focus in a more lucrative market for them since they have fusion, Its a very smart move. If they do decide to make an ARM processor (which i dont think they will) they could do it before intel and beat them if ARM takes over x86.
For AMD diversification is the key. They cant beat any of their competitors out right so they need to hit all competors at all sides to make money. More products, more potential buyers, more potential money.

I'd prefer more reliable sources then just Softpedia, but if true it wouldn't be surprising that they're switching focus especially with the unfortunate Bulldozer numbers. Granted i think a few are overreacting with this notion that AMD is completely pulling it's hand out of the desktop and server market but of course that would be ridicules, they'd be missing out big time.

This is dumb . They are going to compete with Intel all the time if they go after the mobile market that is competing ! AMD has good CPU'S so what if Bulldozer isn't just as good as Intel's Sandy bridge they are close and that is enough really . What a load of BS . IMHO . What is to say the next gen CPU AMD puts out wont be like the Athlons were to the P4 ? It is a joke and more of a publicity stunt that any thing else .
 
Maybe Bulldozer was their final shot at competing with Intel to see if they can finally say they need to look at AMD being a corporation which caters for various components at reasonable performance rather than trying to be top dog.

I am not sure about this " News " . AMD has been a very strong and viable chip maker and even now I am looking at the bulldozer as a NEW build . No reason to go with Intel hell they are way out of my price range any way . So as long as AMD puts out great products I will keep my options open and look at Both chip makers for value and performance . AMD will keep up have kept up and I see no evidence to give any credence to the contrary .

Intel is the size of about 30 AMD's. Competition is what Intel dictates competition is.
