Newmember: "wassup with youre awsome atitude?"

Oldmember reports need to implement grammarnazi and spellnazi 2.0

I would buy oldmember a beer for this.

Hell, I'll even donate to the implementaion of both programs. It would keep my blood pressure down and maybe teach you young whippersnappers a thing or two about how to spell and write.

Now if you need me, I'll be on my porch shaking my cane at the kids and telling them to get off my lawn.

I tend to derail news threads a lot. I think as long as the news/review threads are the ONLY ones being censored I personally wouldn't have a problem with it.

Our front page is a representative of our community. Joking about "Green eggs and RAM" is one thing. Saying "I love me some muthaf@#King RAM" is another.

Oh an Bta you do a great job. I dont mean to derail your threads. It just happens sometimes.

I agree with mailman, don't censor the whole forum, its not like were all 10 year olds here

I dont swear much on the forums and i dont see many others doing it but if you want to implement that feature then go ahead because i dont see a problem with wanting to keep the forums clean.

Its the derailing i find terrible, people derail threads with nonesense or someones talking about something and some person decided to have a conversation with someone thats nothing to do with the thread, sure im all for having friends but come on do i need to read your conversation.

For example: There is a thread about a cpu that just came out and someone will notice in someone else specs "oh i see you have a such and such why not oc it". POINTLESS, cant you just ask them in a PM or on their profile?

Yeah censorship is a bit kindergarten to begin with. Plus it adds extra work to fix something that isnt a real problem...

If something fucking sucks balls, and takes names along with it too prove it. I think that it should be said without being censored.

My son is around at times when I'm in video chat, and words are said that he does hear. Is that bad for him too hear them? I say no, that is just how people really act.

The fact of the matter that he is only 7 means that he is not supposed to say curse words. Yet, there is a time, and place for them when he can say them.

And censoring the whole forum isn't the plan, either.

I'll go ahead and chime in with my usual read too far into it philosophical view most could do without, and that is that the very existence of profanity is perplexing in it's nature to me, and I can't help thinking assigning restrictions on when words should be used is utterly unnecessary. If I am referring to someone's derriere, there are a variety of words I can use, and though true some may be more eloquent than others, that somehow society has determined ass is inappropriate is simply beyond me. It should be just as valid a way to describe it as any, anytime anything censors words in any media I simply chuckle to myself at the inappropriateness of determining the appropriation of appropriate or inappropriate words.

Anyway, I can see why you would and honestly don't think it will effect the overall discussion on the forums either way, but I can't support any further efforts to restrict linguistics.

But is swearing really a noticeable problem as of right now?

It's not, I wouldn't want to be one, either. Hence the move to contain censorship only to the content forums. This is not a "anti-freedom-of-speech" or "anti-community" thing, it's merely keeping two areas of the board which has our content clean as far as the comments go.

Bta wants to KEEP our FACE clean. Professional. They don't care about our ass being clean (main forum). Just stay respectful. I cuss sometimes but most of the time I just use #$% and such. This is just a preventive measure.

What they are trying to avoid is the reviews and main page turning into 4chan. Do you cuss in a job interview? No and you shouldn't feel the need to cuss at a review.

I'm so glad you posted here, it gave me an idea. Why not just censor TheMailMan for now?! He's the local TPU whipping boy/lab rat afterall, let's put a gag in his mouth!! :rockout:

Only if you promise me a reach around.

A job interview and a hardware review are very different environments and I don't think turning TPU frontpage into a JOB INTERVIEW environment is a good thing at all.

The comments section is just for that and is not even a part of the original review. There really isnt a huge need for that section to be squeaky clean.

In any case, if someone wanted to post a picture of a huge penis below a motherboard review no autocensor will stop them.

We have awesome mods... we have a report offensive post button... and we have no problem with obscenity. Why even go through the trouble of the autocensor - it has its downsides (like sending the wrong message to over 50% of the community) when we really don't have to?

Which leads into, if we aren't going to have and autocensor option, do moderators need to be more strict in enforcing proper language? Perhaps we need more moderators to control the news and reviews sections?

No. Why? Because forum members should be mature enough to show restraint when showing emotion - in fact, add the censorship, then those that decide to swear anyway get some kind of infraction for being childish and using inappropriate words / phrases. Jobs a pidgeon.

I don't think so (unless you guys are overworked)... i read just about every piece of news that bta posts, and i cant remember last time i read something on TPU that was offensive. I honestly think this is one of the cleanest sites i frequent... gmail included.

Maybe we can make the report offensive post button bigger.

i'm wondering .. is the occasional swearing in news post comments giving tpu an unprofessional look? we're not a bible discussion forum after all

Do you understand how TPU survives? Its on ad support and W1zz good grace. Do you think any major company will want to advertise on a forum that has reviews like.....

OCZ Thermal Paste: Silcker than owl shit!
Intel's i7: Hotter than a two dollar whore on nickel night!
AMD Phenom: Slower than a retard in a drive through.

No of course not. The reviews are in fact job interviews for TPU. Without them TPU will cease to exist.

mailman we're not talking about the language in our staff-created content but the user-submitted comments

Not really, in my opinion. Of course there are the occasional sailor mouthed members that just got off the ship. If it's excessive language, the moderator(s) that moderates that section can deal with it by editing/deleting and warning/infraction for multiple occurrences. I think having every moderator at TPU having moderator access to the News and Reviews forums would be beneficial.

Uhmmm... 1. We are not even discussing that... we are discussing the COMMENTS section and the front page not the review itself or the reviews that forum members post in the forum. Front page reviews are done by W1zz and the senior members, and they can use w/e language they want.

and 2. Those titles are awesome. And it depends on the advertiser and the target audience of the site. Worked for Howard Stern just fine, as well as many other websites that revolve around foul language and openly embrace it. Many of them have advertisers too - how do you think these sites survive?

I understand that. But the comments reflect the community. But hey if you think its fine then so do I. Its just not something I would want on my front page.

Why not just censer it for any Non-Member?

Guests will not incur foul language and members can tolerate it until they choose to report it.

Win Win?
