Enter to try out a CR-48 Chrome OS notebook

Yes, but with the cloud if you have a fire or flood or tornado or whatever you data is still safe and can be instantly accessed.
It can also be accessed by anyone at Google with credentials and anyone that hacks into your user account. That's why I avoid cloud computing and instead, have my own redundant means to back up data.

Google is the most powerful company in the world today because of the sheer amount of information they have managed to collect. IBM and Amazon are getting up there too.

please stay on topic and limit the cloud/anti-cloud discussion.

WTF... you can choose a different country, but you still HAVE to choose a US state??
Quoting the policy:
I understand that Google will only ship the device to a US-based address and cannot send this device to a P.O. Box or address outside of the US.

Well to me that seems like a ton of money spent beta testing the OS. Why not just put a RC out like M$ did for Win7?
It is: http://getchrome.eu/download.php

I submitted an application. If they do pick me, I will definitely not do anything sensitive on it. Maybe it will be my "Visit TPU and GN" computer.

I wonder how long this pilot program lasts. I didn't see that mentioned anywhere.

That's weird, they shipped 3 to my tiny town. Why my town? And why not me? :shadedshu

Did you say "no" to the provide feedback question? I bet that's an instant reject.

No not at all .
All these things seem to be nothing more than a scam to me . Free Dell laptops ? are you kidding me ? I have signed up for about 50 for them NOT ONCE GETTING ONE !

it looks like they are still taking applications. if you check the main site the apply now link works. also note that unlike what another member in here said prior, it says they will contact you if you have been selected. so who knows, maybe they really don't contact people or they do now and changed their policy?

They shipped only 15,000 out of a theoretical 60,000 (how many Google supposedly ordered). They are down to the single digits of units shipped per day so I wonder what's going on. Maybe they spotted a serious problem and are having logistical issues in fixing it.

good question. i am pretty sure that cr-48 tracker thing is broken. it was never an official tracker and from what ive read it was actually some guy who got a hold of the shipping information illegally. not a good way for google to convince people that their information is secure in their cloud

I just submitted for one.

Still, you'd think they would have shut the application site down if they were no longer accepting any applicants. At the same time, the 7/day might simply be replacing defective/stolen/damaged units to people that previously got one. Maybe 15,000 was all that they accepted. And think about it: that is an adequately large sample size.

Anybody else get one of these? I couldn't resist how sexy they looked so I picked one up on ebay and bought a 40gb SSD so I can throw windows 7 on it. I know its meant to test chromeos out but hey if I get a free one ill use that one to test it out. (they are still supposedly shipping some out).

i heard they are pretty weak since they are designed to simply run a sophisticated web browser. you can install OSX on it...

It has the same specs as a standard netbook. Has an atom n455, 2gb ram, and the upgraded add should help. I wanna dual boot win 7 and OSX.
