Hello everyone. It has been a while since I posted here. I feel it is the time to upgrade my 6 years old 1080, but I do not want to upgrade the whole system. So as the title says, how well do the new 4xxx nvidia GPUs perform in an old system like mine? My system lacks resizable bar and other bells and whistles of the new CPUs.

You will be performance limited in all semi CPU-intensive games. The likes of RTX 3070 and up already max out this CPU at pretty much anything, so going for a 4080/4090 would be overkill. You could actually buy a whole new platform, get a slower GPU (3080, 6800 XT) for the same price of a 4080. Let alone the 4090, which is currently extra expensive.

My advice would be to wait a little longer and then go for a new platform altogether. You're using DDR4, so you already have the memory. Your cheapest option is to get a good X570 board and a 5600X, which is already 30-40%-ish procent faster and the combination can be had for less than 350€. If you really want it to last you a long time, be on the lookout for discounts on the 5800X3D. You won't of course be able to upgrade anymore, but the setup will last you just as long as your 5820K did ;) You can then continue to spend the rest of the money on a good GPU. Not a 4080 but a 3080 or 6800 XT. That would be a huge upgrade (double the frames) :)

Depends on your use case and your screen size and hz. If you use 4k or higher with max details and RT on, CPU won't matter much.

Ditto casual gaming at 4k 60+, you probably don't even need 4x series for that unless you want RT.

If you're at lower res and want max FPS, 144 to 240 FPS for competitive gaming, you'll want a CPU upgrade.

Haswell-e has good cache clocking ability so it games pretty well and with quad channel memory to so a 4080 would do just fine if it were around 8-900.us it would be a decent combo
12 threads is no slouch just needs a little bump in core & cache clocks.
Just xmp 2666 is fine to although I have 3200c14 on my 5930k system.

If all you plan to upgrade is your video card, then don't bother with a 40 series card on that aging platform. You won't be getting anywhere near the performance you will be paying for as you will be heavily CPU limited even at 4K resolution with all settings maxed. You would just be spending money for no reason.

CPU is very important for RT games.

You'd think the whole point of RTX was to do all ray tracing on GPU.

Any RT CPU/ GPU scaling articles around? Genuinely interested since personally never really bothered with it. Quick google reveals it seems to heavily depend on the game.

You will get the best performance in 4k. But even at 4k the GPU sometimes gets stuck at the CPU limit. At 1080p and 1440p you will definitely be stuck at the CPU limit. Anyway, these cards are mostly for 144 Hz 1440p monitors or 4k 60-120 Hz monitors.

Hi,
Most would just disable the crapware
But in nvidia control panel switching off recommended for PhysX and pegging it on gpu would help a lot here because gpu would do better.

The way the global economy is lately, especially with health problems lingering, I'm not sure anyone has a crystal ball on what is a good investment for the next 3 or so years. Case in point, I thought I was wise waiting for the GTX 1080 price to drop, but then mining took hold hard, there were card shortages, and price gouging. When mining finally died down, I settled for a price of $600 on an EVGA GTX 1080 SC. That's just $50 below launch price.

Whether we like it or not, the world economy has changed drastically, and it may never go back to being as stable as it was. What really upsets me is the FTX crash changed a lot of people's opinions about crypto, but now these other problems are causing pricing problems too. It seems if it's not one thing, it's another. You're lucky to even nab the GPU you want in time when new high end ones come out, and there's no telling how long it will take to get them back in stock, or if they will sell out just as quick when they are.

Bottom line, it's very hard to be a frugal enthusiast gamer anymore. As far as 3090 Ti prices dropping, I don't know where you're seeing them, because a lot of the better brands are gone, and the prices still look pretty high to me, like $1100 for a Nvidia FE at Best Buy. I know that's cheaper than they launched, but you have to compare them to the ones launching now performance and price wise, and it just doesn't seem worth it.

As the owner of three fully functional X99 systems the only thing I'd replace is the CPU. A 16 core Xeon E5 2683 V4 can be bought for a little over $60 USD on Ebay (I have one in an Asus X99 Deluxe). It will give you the best bang for the buck and you won't have to change any other hardware in your system. Save your $$$ for building a new rig that'll enable you to get the most performance out of a pricey new GPU.

I've been through several CPU's since I built my first X99 system in mid-2015. 5930K, 5960X, 6950X, E5 2678 V3, E5 2683 V4 and E5 2699 V4. The 2683 V4 ended up being the one I liked best. It's a giant upgrade over a 5930K running at any clock speed and runs far cooler.

Additional cores will do next to nothing for gaming performance and may actually decrease it. The issue is slow, old cores. His current setup is overclocked fairly hard, and higher core count won't guarantee as fast clockspeeds.

I love Xeons but man this ain't the situation for more cores. OP needs raw speeds.

For X99 the fastest CPU is a 5960X. 4.7GHz overclocks are common on decently binned ones. They do get hot under loads though. I have another 6950X I was recently given to play with but haven't completed the build yet. The best I've gotten out of one is 4.4GHz and it ran a lot warmer than any of my 5960X's. I didn't have all of the Arctic Liquid Freezer II's I now have back then though so maybe a 360 with better fans in push/pull will help with cooling it at sane levels.

Waste of money. I've tried my 3090 on my X99 system, some games perform well, others are an unmitigated disaster, it's just too dated.

Your 5820K will get a good old spanking from a Ryzen 5 1600, you just don't want to run such a high spec card on an almost 9 year old CPU. Even if you upgrade to Broadwell that brings you at best to parity with the mid range Zen+ chips eg. R5 2600.

You'd think the whole point of RTX was to do all ray tracing on GPU.

Any RT CPU/ GPU scaling articles around? Genuinely interested since personally never really bothered with it. Quick google reveals it seems to heavily depend on the game.
Talking about RT acceleration on the GPU is a pointless endeavor when the bones said GPU are plugged into are nearly a decade old.

You wouldnt put a 4000 series of any large capacity on a haswell machine, even the baseline ryzens would whip it in a benchmark. x99 is slower in gaming then haswell was. At that point you're putting lipstick on an old hog.

That will bottleneck the cpu by upgrading to the 4080 or 4090. Save up and get an i9-13900K, plus a new motherboard with lga 1700 and z790, get at least 3200Mhz ddr4 as well. In fact, just save up and upgrade the entire pc and make a new rig. Don't waste money on a gpu that will bottleneck like crazy.

Don't expect 500 fps at 720p. but at 3x1080p144 or 4K it could be ok. Will take many dips to 60 Fps but so what. If you are a fan of high FPs don't even ask.

I'm under the impression that my 3.2Ghz 10/10 Xeon can handle even a 4080 just fine. Not the 4090.

Yeah, no, it wouldn't.
