How do you currently feel about your 5850? Are you lacking game performance? Are you currently playing a lot of intensive games? Do you yearn for the additional features of a newer card (if there are any)?

The way I see it, it's pretty much useless to buy a new video card these days, esp. if you already have a good one (like the 5850). Less and less quality PC games are coming out; a majority are shitty console ports.

Go for the SSD.

Just get a cheap SSD. I got a 70 quid 64GB Kingston SSDNow and it makes a world of difference.

Remember the good old days when people (myself included) bought SCSI boot drives for faster seek performance? The difference was like 4ms vs 12ms but people still paid their money for tiny capacities and expensive Adaptec controllers.

Now imagine 12ms vs 0.3ms and you can see why any SSD makes a big difference. Besides, your GPU is still good!

Yup.

Whenever I drop frames in games such as online BFBC2 it is due to CPU bottleneck. The GPU of my 5850 never goes much above 60% for any game whatsoever (I refuse to even sniff at Metro 2033 as shitty poorly optimised games give me upgrade bugs that I don't need). So to summarise, the 5850 is more than enough graphics horsepower for any game that is even halfway worth playing.

If u really must spend yet more money on your PC, then the SSD all the way. Aside from the much snappier desktop experience, you should notice a little increase in gaming performance as well. Or at least I did.

I'd avoid SSDs until they come in a size worth the price, and there's an os that doesn't need half a dozen tweaks to make proper use of them. With any luck windows 8 and decently sized SSDs will hit at the same time. You buy a SSD now it's value is going to sink faster than any other component. It just doesn't pay to be the first user of a baby tech.

How about massive amounts of RAM and RAMdisk

RAM is incredibly cheap atm... about 22.50$ per 2GB when you buy in high quantity... not bad, else about 30$ / 2gb, still 32GB of RAM , 28GB of RAMdisk

I do personally love SSDs, but if I were in your position, I would wait to see what the 68xx series brings, then make your decision. By then, you might even be able to buy a larger/faster SSD for $200.
