LGA 1155 (Sandy Bridge) is the newest socket that came out in January, and it is the "AMD Llano" of Intel (mainstream platform with IGP capabilities, but it actually kicks ass). The Enthusiast "e.g. AMD FX" (Sandy Bridge - E, LGA 2011) will be out by the end of the year or early next year.

As far as chipsets go:
H61/H67: Basic IGP chipset, overclocking restricted. Avoid.
P67: Performance non-IGP chipset, multiplier overclocking allowed on K models beyond Turbo speeds.
Z68: The best of both worlds, and then some. IGP, multiplier OC on K models, Smart Response capable (currently Gigabyte supplies the SSDs on some of their Z68 boards.

Another thing to look out for is PCIe Gen3 support (the switches on the board need to be PCIe3 capable), so you can drop in Ivy Bridge and get full PCIe3 support across all the slots. I plan on going Z68 with the ASRock Z68 Extreme3 Gen3, which appears to be a great value board.

Z68: multiplier OC on K models,

Just wanted to throw this out there cause sometimes it gets lost. The functionality is there to do a +4 multiplier overclock on any non-K chip that has Turbo (i5 & i7 s1155 lineup) on P67 & Z68. For example, i5 2400 has a 3.4Ghz Turbo clock, add 4 multipliers and you can obtain 3.8, now add a small bclk overclock to 103-105, you are a little under 4Ghz.

many thanks for that :toast:

so the Sandy Bridge E LGA 2011 will be coming out soon, will it be compatible with ivy bridge? will the P67 chipset be compatible with both sandy bridge E and ivybridge?

another thing that is worrying me is the soon to be released socket 2011, initial impressions suggest that a 6 core chip will not be coming on the socket 1155 platform but on the socket 2011 platform, is it worth waiting for that socket?

Well...like any question of this nature the answer depends on what you will be using the computer for. 6 true cores is great but what kind of software are you running and such? Of course there may be other advantages to 2011 than just more cores for you but again depends on your specific needs.

By the way, please edit your last post if you have something more to add instead of double-posting. Thanks.

the first 6 core sandy bridge-e processors are gonna be released for socket 1155 IIRC. Socket 2011 is still some time away. To far away to wait for IMHO. Build yourself a p67 chipset system with either a 2500k I5 or 2600k I7 CPU, you won't regret it.
