Microsoft claims I signed up for Windows 10...

You can't hide from Windows 10

2016-02-03-19-30-31.jpg

you should take this claim to a civil court and file a counterclaim against Microsoft for slander - Its not like you want to sully your hard drive with their spyware infested OS.

Sue for damages to your online reputation - you dont want to be seen as one of those who gave into the darkside and answered the call for the free upgrade

Steve Gibson made an excellent stoppage to the 10 crap.
After a lady friend of his got hit with the auto she was overwhelmed, so he fixed up this to just keep it away since the KB just keeps coming back.
It's a stand alone, run it and stop's it and fix's the policy key to read only so m$ cant re-enable it, and later it can be run gain to enable it.

Never 10

At work we have Win7 and the IT guys have figured out how to suppress the Win10 upgrade notifications. I'll have to ask how they did it.

Probably something like this:

Block Windows 10 upgrades.reg

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate]
"DisableOSUpgrade"=dword:00000001

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\GWX]
"DisableGWX"=dword:00000001

[HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\OSUpgrade]
"ReservationsAllowed"=dword:00000000

They likely pushed out these registry edits in a Group Policy update.

For home users, I think that GWX Control Panel is a more convenient way to reign in unwanted Windows 10 upgrades. This utility makes it easy to change your mind at a later time.

I actually consider the registry edits easier and less hassle than doing manual updates...

I like automatic updates, I don't like having to sift through updates every month needing to research what each one does. That sounds like more hassle to me.
Agreed :toast:

Meh, win10 isn't that bad. I still prefer 7 though, as an avid desktop user and a keen eye for aesthetics.
I do like the new start menu, an improvement over the old one, at least imo.

I still don't understand why ms dumbed down the looks of the desktop interface, nowadays hardware has no problems whatsoever with aero and all bells and whistles.

A keen eye for aesthetics? Aero is too much "bling bling". I prefer something more subtle and clean. Aero looks dated. But to each his own.

Just take the 10 pill like the rest of us sheeple.

Sacrilege! :p

I love Aero and do miss it in W10. On the other hand, I do prefer W10's square corners quite a bit more than those rounded ones (better for window screenshots, especially) and it does look smart, so living without Aero isn't as bad as I'd first thought.

People carry on don't they? Anyone using a modern smart phone, especially an Android based one are being monitored. APIs and OS telemetry systems collect a trove of user data. Heck, just browsing the web with cookies and persistent logins collects plenty of data. It seems people only care because it's a Microsoft product. Not saying it's right, but you might also want to point your fingers at others too.

One reason I don't have a smart phone, other reason I consider them a pain in the royal butt and annoying. I still have a stupid 5-6 year old slider it does it job as a phone very well, plus phone bill is cheap got love a 20 dollar phone bill. Plus, I tend to leave my phone behind on occasions (I mostly dislike cell phones in general).

But yeah, all those other buggers collect data too. Reason I keep my important data and stuff off electronics connected to the internet.

Do a rethink !
Smarthphones - large screen ; fast CPUs - video recording , games; some have flight mode - no radiation !

Some smart phones can disable Internet via cell phone net , only via Wi-Fi or USB

Like I said I dislike cell phones and smart phones in general.
I could care less about having one. Plus, no hell in way am I going to pay the data bill to have one.

Plus, if I want to block peeps access, I just get a jammier or make one. (both are not hard to get or do)

The only darn reason I even have a cell phone is because my job makes it a requirement. Otherwise, I would not even have that.

Tips : Speaker and some hands-free ease people, so they dont need to expose themselves to radiation , making calls .

At our home , all such phones are in flight mode . The only one in stand-by is the ordinary (wired) one

And note how all of them are recommended and optional. I've never, ever bothered with those.

On 8.1, "Recommended" is the mandatory ones that they automatically check. That's why it suck for people who have auto updates on. A lot of those upgrade authorization are just waiting and already checked.

It not the radiation. I just straight up don't like phones. It like the one electronic I just don't like. Just don't ask me why, I just don't like them.

A radio on the other hand I like messing with those. I'm odd when it comes to cell phones or any phone in general. I just don't like them. Use to get in trouble for not answering phones. I hear one ringing I just rather not mess with it or walk out of the room.

While I partially understand the need for Microsoft to have verbose telemetry at hand (so they can solve bunch of problems experienced with systems directly, where they had to solely rely on people contacting them through support in the past), it should still be a thing that is easy to opt out and respects your decision. Instead they've gone with the worst method, throwing clauses into EULA (that we know no one reads because it's just a wall of text not even lawyers can properly understand) and turn it all on by default without any easy way to turn it off if you feel so.

Today, I got this after weeks of killing Win10 upgrade notifications:

win-10-liars.png

I do see an opt out button below the time and date but I simply don't trust them. Advice?
I just got a similar notification on a Windows 7 laptop this afternoon, only difference is it doesn't give me the option to cancel like yours, I can only reschedule or confirm the date they gave me. Sneaky dogs! Not happy, now I have to go through all installed updates and remove those relating to GWX. Hopefully that will stop it.

Just curious
if you have paid software that is licenced to one machine under win 7 and microsuck upgrades you to w10 without explicit permission ( as they apparently are ) if said Software still works under W10 but is licenced to a win 7 machine
IS MICROSUCK MAKING YOU A SOFTWARE PIRATE

Depends on how the terms are written most are licensed to one machine. OS makes no difference, they are written so you can reinstall the software if there is a hardware failure or upgrade.

The program I posted does this conveniently for you....:).

Click

The slickest little program I've run across in years. Runs in a DOS box as well. It will immediately put a stop to any Windows 10 GWX, telemetry, CEIP nonsense. I've tested this for myself on several Windows 7 x64 installs and I've had ZERO issues using it, although....I have waited until all updates have installed....and then I run the program.

Best,

Liquid Cool
