Microsoft to Standardize RGB Control within Windows 11 Settings

Hi,
Doubtful
MS can't even set a uniform desktop theme/ banner color past blue

I think you have to run as admin and then save to device.

Yessir that's what I do, otherwise it won't even find the DIMMs when not run as admin

Save to Device still doesn't persist after reboot, and even though OpenRGB service starts automatically at boot it doesn't set the indicated profile, I have to manually open it up. Feels no different than older buggy versions that would forget to set one of them.

Hi,
Might help before extracting all to right click and go to properties and use the unblock box and save.

I set it to off on a admin account and use mostly a standard account and it works fine.
I update on the admin account and it still works fine.

Well, at the very least this should be entertaining.
I salute your efforts MS now if you could also have Excel open identical data sets the same way each time, and for document editing to not suck ass in a "WWHHYyyyyu, I didn't need that or ask for it" kinda way then great.

I got harmony from icue and aura but roccat KB and mouse be like nah ima do what I want fool.

Remember when I thought I fried the RGB module in my Royals last year? I had saved off to one and spectrum to the other with OpenRGB.. was working through reboots and everything lol. The G.Skill software was useless.. couldn’t see the stick. I lived with it for a few weeks before I played with that program again lol. And when I did voila it was working again

Heh, looks like y'all hopped on the bandwagon at just the right time. v0.8 seems to be now capable of turning off the LEDs then writing them to G.skill DIMMs so they never turn LEDs on again. Never had this option before in older builds. No one-and-done for color control, though, only LEDs Off.

Nope. Just like I remember, everything reverts after a cold boot. At which point there's no practical difference to just running G.skill control on boot and closing it manually.

There's still room for MS to make a difference here.

Thats what I think too. OpenRGB was never really an option for me, because half the problem is that I dont want all these apps to begin with. I got so frustrated with apps fighting each other over RGB registers or settings not sticking, I just change the color in BIOS for what I can and just moved my case to the other side of the desk so the crazy colors dont bother me lol.

I am sure like most that it wont be great when MS releases it, but it will be nice if they keep at it and improve support over time. It will be nice to link the settings to my account and just have it do it, instead of playing with like 9 pieces of trash software.

It doesn't look like you can set the video card RGB config via the UEFI-BIOS, though.

Would be interesting if MS comes up with a solution that doesn't involve Winring0. Something about vulnerabilities with all these different programs that rely on it. I think @unclewebb got rid of it in Throttlestop a while back due to those concerns and anticheats blocking Winring0

The less extra software the better.

I disable fast startup on my Windows installations (don't like hibernate and fake shutdown), so I'm guessing Save to Device just doesn't work at all from a true cold boot. Restart doesn't actually power cycle.

I'm stuck staring at the right side of my S3 for now so I'm back to G.skill software. If I was on the other side I wouldn't even run any software, just let it rainbow all day. At least it's gotten slimmer and never misses a beat on boot, I guess.

Hi,
Yep rgb off in bios should disable the crap on pci-e and dimm slots at the least.

Lol, people are satisfied about RGB. Just wow. I guess many players are watching on colors rather than what monitor is showing :D.

Yeah we get it. Pretty lights and aesthetic considerations are beneath you. I, for one...being back into this stuff since before ARGB was a thing...think the customization is pretty cool and its fun to have something totally new to geek out with (you know, besides curve optimizer and such). But it didnt take me long to figure out that most people are far from "satisfied" with it, notably the software control, which is why this is such potentially big news.

Lol relevant fun fact...when I first started looking at Newegg again in December after my buddy gave me his CH7 for $50 I was like "Huh what is with this rainbow theme on everything"...no fool those are lights. And then I proceed to buy some relatively crappy Trident Z but its cool Ive since acquired 96GB of B-Die and some DJR too (having a blast man)

If it works...great.

Fascinating to glance over this thread. I never knew RGB was a big thing outside teenager bedrooms. Personally, I find it all rather kitsch. I prefer minimal and invisible. But I appreciate there are others that like Christmas trees, Piccadilly Circus, or Times Square all year round... Actually, why not mount your PC inside a Coca-Cola fridge and KVM to it.

Actually, that would make a nice case.

No way its red...see I have choices now...and the bedroom deck-out thing is bit much even for teenagers IMO but the point is whatever floats your aesthetic boat should be fine and I dont see why this kind of news always brings out the "minimalists" to comment too. We already know you hate it.

Somehow i get the feeling you lack the knowledge on how to set RGB lighting to anything but default rainbow mode and this software will be perfect for someone like you

So you dont want software to let you turn OFF the rgb?

I'll never understand why people decide to hate on something without any knowledge on the subject at all.

My keyboard looks like this: It's not a case of "off" or "rainbow"

I use software to disable the lighting in my PC and set the keyboard to look like that, unless i'm showing it off and taking photos of the build

OMG - your keyboard looks like that when you turn it on! And your PC? My eyes are hurting already.

Hate on something? This fantasia of a computer light show:

In some countries, I'm sure that is illegal.

Awesome. Can I set it all to black?

It's pretty meh, i can think of dozens of other shit they could which would be better, but i guess it's some thing positive.

One for sure it aint tempting me to buy it or even upgrade for free.

Microsoft cant even get HDR screen capture right. What makes them think they can do this?

Awesome. Can I set it all to black?
Yes. It's called RGB off...

OMG you mean I can uninstall iCUE and Razer Ornata from my PC's. iCUE bloat is horrendous.
Beacuse on a gaming pc in 2023 when ppl have 32-64GB of ram, high end computer with fast SSD's, that matters.

openrgb exists. and even that isnt perfect.

you're mad to expect this to be like, more than a tenth as functional as openrgb will ever be.
Having the third party software straight the manufacturer is going to be the best option since for example iCue is built to work around their products and it having all its features. No way Microsofts version is going to come anywhere close.

Ive never understood it either. It's not like all PC's with RGB is just constantly doing all colors of the rainbow. Mine are set to static colors with maybe a fancy lighting display. People shit on RGB for no reason other than to have something to complain about and it boggles my mind as to why. RGB has really opened up how we use themes with our computers. Before, it was all a static color and if you wanted a new color for your system (ie going from blue to green), you actually had to swap the fans out for another static color fan. Now, if you get bored with a color, you can change it completely on the fly. Hell, we have color options for fans and other things that werent even possible before. Couldnt really find orange or yellow fans 20 years ago. Now, that option is possible.

But lets bitch about how RGB is so bad.

Must. Crap. On. RGB.

The urge.

I do love lighting for eyes though! Makes a world of a difference.

Hi,
Unless you install the software yes the rgb device stays on rainbow puke
But either way I'm sure ms will screw it up even worse

OpenRGB is pretty light weight already so I don't see the point of finding another setting in 11 that will likely reset after every large update

Keyboards wise people will still need the software to do other things to the keyboard functions besides rgb crap.

Hell I got rid of a G910 because of the nasty rgb puke default and bought more G710+ that are just white light
My mouse to needs the software anyway to control it's 12 side buttons so I'm sure ms will screw that all up.

Oh no you're one of those weirdos with a light in front of the monitor!?

Glasses No GIF by nounish ⌐◨-◨

ps: just kidding, have at it lol
I have my lights. Lightbar, lamp behind my chair, and the screen. Maximum eye protection.

Yay!

I just want a way to turn stupid RGBLED off without installing five different pieces of shit software.

This feature doesn't sound that great, since there still needs to be an app from the manufacturer for all the special lighting features of individual products, eg two different brand RAM sticks having different lighting features. Otherwise, it's a bit like having a generic video driver giving only a basic display and no 3D adjustments.
