Just posted by LTT. Check it out.

The real reason is to prevent sales of used cards and therefore make NVIDIA a bigger profit.

As I posted in the news? thread about this...

• Gamers are complaining about not being able to get a graphics card, often blaming miners
• Nvidia ships cards en masse directly to miners
• 3060 has similar mining performance to the 3060ti and even the 3070 (or it would if not artificially gimped)

What to do? Some genius came up with the idea to castrate the 3060's mining performance. They get to make it look like they care about gamers by limiting the mining performance midrange card, which should perform about the same as more expensive models. The result? Miners are forced to buy more expensive hardware (or come up with a way to bypass the limit somehow) while most gamers will happily accept the table scraps. It's a win-win for Nvidia.

I don't see this affecting used sales too much. For example, a gamer typically keeps his graphics card for at least a few years. Let's use the GTX1080 as an example. For a gamer upgrading from a GTX1080, they might sell it off and upgrade to something better. A gamer with even older hardware looking for a cheap deal might buy that used GTX1080. A miner isn't going to care about that GTX1080 if they can help it. It's too old, too slow, and performance per watt is too low to be attractive, unless they're just looking to fill slots and it's all they can get. Similarly, if profitability goes to shit and availability is still bad, or hell, even if it's not bad, a miner can easily sell his RTX3080s. Gamers will buy them, and other miners might even buy them. The only thing this does is discourage miners from buying up RTX3060s, and miners gonna mine so they'll have to pay for the more expensive model that isn't gimped. Or they'll buy the 3060s anyway and bypass the limit. Nvidia won't care much either way, they still made their sales, whether they to go miners or gamers.

Even the news that Nvidia is handicapping the mining performance of the 3060 is enough slow down miners from gobbling up all the stocks, which would help more gamers get their 3060, so it's a win win situation.
Also if miners can sell their used GPU easily, which will only aid their mining profitability, they will just keep on buying new GPU and therefore PC gaming is fucked forever.

This is true but Linus doesn't go around jerking himself off about how he's for gamers like Nvidia does.

Nvidia tells you what to think whereas Linus is laying out an argument. Whatever your opinion on Linus, you cannot deny he's made an solid argument here.

Why would one miner sell a card to another miner during a mining craze? I guess its possible but very unlikely.

When you get gamers crying that they should also be allowed to do some mining on the side, you realise Nvidia are damned if they do, and damned if they don't.

They aren't a charity, go buy a cheap and widely available AMD card instead...

Thats not true. Linus is the type of guy that knows where he comes from. Hes worked his ass off to build what he has built. If it wasnt for his viewers, he wouldnt be where he is at now. Sure, he'll use bait worthy titles to generate traffic, but who wouldnt? Who doesnt? That's the business model these days and you would do it too if you knew damn well it would benefit you in the same position.

And to quote Linus "If you imagine it any other way, then congratulations, you played yourself."

About as solid as diarrhea I guess.
1. More gamers can get their hands on the new RTX 3060, even if half the available silicons were dedicated to CMP line because let's face it miners will buy up all the available stocks if nothing was done (dirty retailers already sold all their stocks to miners).
2. Mining operations will produce more e-waste, cards that can last 5+ years gaming maybe live less than 3 years mining.
So overall Nvidia is only helping their own cause, but gamers can benefit too.

I sure wouldn't... But when the current bubble bursts, if it does, I might grab some of those cheap used cards everyone says the market will be flooded with. If I knew when/if BTC was going to tank, I'd sell it all off, and get better stuff while it's available for a sane price, then mine and HODL again.

PC gaming is fucked forever.
High end it might be. But lower end aka GT 1030 for MOBA, CSGO, Overwatch etc. and with rich people buying GTX 1050 Ti. 1080p will became the new 4K and 720p then new 1080p. Oh and GPU will be passed from father to son or mother to daughter and even written in ones will along with the house, money and the car :)

It all sounds apocalyptic and all, but here's my five cents.
Nvidia has recently restarted GP107 production for 1050Ti's, so who's to say that this is the only old Pascal-based GPU in production.
I'm pretty sure Samsung's 14nm volume has decreased a bit over the years, and Nvidia's claimed hashrates for most of these cards(except 90HX, which clearly is a 3090) are in-line with some older mining SKUs, like P106/104/102.
I'm not 100% sure, but if that's the case - team green makes more money on outdated arch, while 30-series gets gimped to make it less mining-viable.

im not keen on Linus "im sure hes a wonderful guy" mainly because of the way he treats kit ie most kit he touches he kills but his points are sound in this case.

Alright, so you must be commenting without having watched the video. Both your points are discussed in the video and LInus's argument is a hell of a lot better than yours.

No, what creates more eWaste is making GPUs that can only be used for mining so that when the boom goes bust again not a single gamer can use any of them. The additional benefit to Nvidia is that none of those cards will be useful to gamers, in effect greatly reducing the number of cheap used GPUs that would otherwise have hit the market. This isn't going to help gamers, it's going to hurt them. The complete antithesis of your point.

Also, no. The idea that mining GPUs don't last long is an assumption. I've purchased multiple RX 480s, 580s, and 7970s dirt cheap that have been mined on as gifts. The worst problem has been one needing a fan replacement. The 7970s I've bought as gifts have been in operation for over 6 years now. The video goes more in depth on the topic but your argument has been debunked on tech forms time and time again. There's jack diddly evidence to support it. FYI it doesn't matter regardless as miners are going to mine and buy cards no matter what. Just because it's an Nvidia mining GPU doesn't mean it doesn't count as eWaste. Nvidia isn't reducing the amount of GPUs being allocated to mining, it's simply allocating a minimum amount that miners will get regardless. You are gravely mistaken if you think that allocating a guaranteed minimum to mining will reduce eWaste or that anything Nvida has done here will stop people from buying cards during a boom.

LTT doesn't care about you either. It only cares about views, subscribers and sales.
Isn't that a little bit of a contradiction if you're a subscriber and watch LTT? He does actually care about you if that means you clicking "unsubscribe" or not viewing his videos.

In all seriousness though, he makes some really good points.

LTT often use bait-worthy titles to create traffic. LTT doesn't care about you either. It only cares about views, subscribers and sales.

Bingo.
YT is like TV. Entertainment with zero substance... and here we are reposting it like sheep

No, We keep reposting it because there is no other platform like it that is so easily shared. If it bothers you that much, dont watch, or suggest another platformsoapbox to distribute your opinion. We can say the same thing about forums, we use forums like sheep.
