PC keeps killing my mice

I have built a PC for my son

DFI Lanparty X58
Xeon W3520
HD7970
8gb ddr 1333

The PC works great.

Over the weekend it managed to kill every mouse in the house, 4 of them. I have tested the USB sockets with various things, he has a camera, a digital music keyboard and a xbox 360 controller attached all of which are working fine.

All the mice light up however there is no mouse visible in Device Manager.

The final straw was when i plugged my own mouse in and it broke that too. At the moment i am using a wifi mouse thingy on my phone which is rubbish as it wont control any apps on my desktop.

Please note, ALL the mice were working, and worked for a while when plugged into the new PC.

Help please.

Have you verified that the USB plug is not reversed on the motherboard?if its not keyed ofc

So the mice didn't work once plugged in to a different PC after they stopped working in themproblem pc?

Also verify there are no device charging functions built into bios

When I first read the title I thought you have a pest control problem at home.

All USB the ports on motherboard result in the same issues?

All the USB ports work. I have verifed this with a selection of things.

The mice dont work in other pcs once they have been in this build...............it breaks them.

The only pest infestation i have at home are in school at the moment.

If the mice are no longer working properly after being plugged into this problem PC, my guess would have to be that it's some kind of voltage problem. Which would be something I would assume is controlled by the motherboard. I wouldn't hesitate to remove all other peripherals from the USB ports because they may likely be fried.

If this happens on both front panel as well as the USB ports built into the motherboard it means that you may have a big issue with the board itself and need to retire it at least until the repair is rendered . Since there's always the possibility the front panel USB was plugged into a fan plug or something incorrectly but the rear plugs being part of the mobo remove rhat possibility

What a shitty issue to have. If this PC support PS/2 I would use that as a quick fix

What a shitty issue to have

i am assuming that something like a usb wifi dongle would fry too, but it hasnt.

My son isnt too bothered about it, he is fluent in keyboard controls so he can navigate OK. Its a 4 hour round trip for me to go and get another mouse but i would like some considered opinions before i make the journey .......otherwise it can wait till one of my scheduled trips to town.

try going PS/2?? or replace Mobo (as unpleasant as that is) , ive found this issue on other forums, and the prognosis isnt good. :shadedshu:

Weird.

Try having one of these. They sometimes do wonders with RF signal related parts. But this us only a full speed device. It should be OK for a mice.

Hmmm, could put putting out too much voltage. Maybe get something cheap like this just so you can check it.

Maybe get a pcie usb hub and run off that... sounds like voltage regulation is going on the usb ports...

That's an even better idea than what I thought of. The PCIE USB hub would be the best bet in my opinion as well. Assuming of course all USB ports are doing this. My fear is you may fry whatever components are still plugged into that PC. Best bet would be to remove them and put the PC on light duty until the issue was resolved

The only thing that could really kill are not the VCC but data line I/O levels.

Does that Motherboard have jumpers up near the top left corner for mouse/ keyboard use?
I vaguely remember an old board I had that changed throughput from ports so they would be compatible.

And it looks like earth dogs option is one of the few viable choices go with that PCI hub?

See if a known working PS2 mouse does the trick?

Or gambles a Wi-Fi dongle won't get fried with a wireless mouse option

Its not a huge problem, just an annoyance. @Luke Whitton is currently getting dressed and climbing in to his loft in search of a ps/2 mouse.

my son is really happy with the PC, it plays his games effortlessly and runs cool and quiet too even with a monster overclock.

incidentally i tried a different HDD ( thinking virus) and removed the o/c and neither made a difference.

I forgot i have a voltmeter in my drawer....Luke is my local electronics expert and he is going to take a look later too.

This definitely sounds like a voltage problem. Also, it's quite possible that other devices are more tolerant of high voltages.

First thing to do is to measure the voltage at the USB port with a multimeter or tester like infrared suggested. If it's high, then check the voltages off the PSU. If it's normal, then it's just weird.

Thats what i was thinking,and maybe getting a a old mouse cable ( we know you have some

) and checking the the output voltages, even better if you have a multi-meter that has high-average-low setting over time.

Might be just spiking or even dipping every so often, could be only when your gaming too when the systems power demand goes up\down.

Some BIOS have charge function enabled all thé time even when computer is closed. Turnn it off and plug in usb ports one by one à usb light or à usb fan. If not then turn back on the computer and plug thé fan in différent ports. If one of them make fan spin faster or light way brighter it mean thé port is over-current and kill whatever it gets inside.
