yes i do, and i didnt even think to try it. I dont have a working mouse now to try it with till Luke eventually turns up.

im baffled now.

Luke came with a usb mouse so we connected it using the ps/2 usb to ps/2 adapter.....still no mouse, not even a pointer on the screen. Plugged it into my pc and the mouse works fine so at least the ps/2 connection hasnt frazzled it.

Definitely. I recommend you swap out that PSU with a known good one ASAP before risking an overvoltage situation destroying the RAM, CPU, or some other sensitive component until you can pinpoint the source of the problem.

Swapping PSUs will eliminate yours as the problem but it should be noted it could be a faulty voltage regulator circuit on the motherboard too, and not the PSU. Let's hope it is the PSU.

BTW, those USB voltage testers are nice, but they don't test the PSU's output. A PSU Tester is nice for that. While not conclusive (does not test for excessive ripple and does not place a full range of expected loads on the supply - neither do most multimeters), they are better than nothing.

The mysterious Jumper I mentioned earlier, looks like it is only for Stand By, but if not supported by your PSU and the Jumper is in the wrong position, can affect the mouse's operation.

If the 5V line is damaged it will switch to another 5Vsb rail, as I said it may explain some things.

Switch to another power outlet even, if it kills another toss the board.

i tested the PSU as soon as i bought it, it came with 2 sets of modular cables, one of of which didnt work. i suspected faulty PSU but tested all the rails fine once i discounted the dodgy cables.

I have researched the jumper as well, it is a sleep function.

How? I note to test a PSU properly, it takes an o'scope with the supply under a variety of expected loads, or a dedicated power supply analyzer that puts and tests the supply under a variety of expected loads. These are sophisticated and expensive pieces of test equipment typically found only in electronics repair facilities and used by qualified electronics technicians.

And of course, power supplies can test fine one day, then fail the next. So I agree with Sasqui, don't rule it out until you swap in a known good spare.

Is there more voltage regulation in USB peripherals than others? But that still doesnt explain why the ps/2 connector doesnt work with a known good mouse.

Check to see if there is an enable/disable function, find your board manual or download it.

Yes it has current meters and and enable/protection switches. Special charger ports have their own step down parts. Also... aren't there any tools that screw around with USB polling rate?

No. In fact it is probably less because the PSU already outputs 5VDC. The most regulation occurs for the much more sensitive "high density" devices (memory, processors, and other ICs etc.) that require divided voltages (1.5V for example).

I think only in windows there is that function, hardware properties i believe.

The issue may be the mAmps not the Volts, although I'm unsure why some components work and others don't.
