Hi,

Can anyone tell me which is more practical and which will perform best??

-4 x EVGA 8800GT Superclock in SLI or 1 x EVGA 280GTX

Additionally can anyone estimate frame rates for both in crysis. I live in the United Kingdom so computer parts are really expensive, the EVGA GTX280 is $850 atm, this is why I'm questions whether to go for the 8800GT's. Thanks pps....

you can't use 4 8800gt. you can only use 2. some cards allow 3 but that's only the uber high end.

How would you get 4 8800GT's running anyway?

Edit: lol, hat beat me too it.

There y'go, Hat answered it. CrossfireX gives you the option for 4 cards without having to buy 4 high-end cards.

You can run 2 9800GX2 cards. That's like having 4 8800GT cards installed.

I think you can only do the 3 way (according to EVGA's site) with the 8800 Ultra, you may be able to do it with the GTX. However, this is only 3, not the four like you said. As for Quad I think it means 2 x GX2.

Well I'm getting the system on finance anyway because this is easier for me (Just turned 18), so could go all out lol. So back to the original point, what estimated frame rates would be achievable in crysis on a 32" screen tv in 1920 x ..... resolution on two 8800gt sc'd. Thanks :)

Not great. If you want to play crysis with the settings turned up at that res, you are gonna need either GTX 280 SLi or 9800GX2 SLi. (someone will know which is better)

But obviously it depends on the settings you want to run at. You could get FPS in the 100's on the lowest setting probably.

Also if you have just turned 18, careful on how much you try to get on credit, there are credit checks and they may need proof of income ofr how you are going to pay for it.

Actually Gigabyte had a quad SLI board for a while. Not sure if that works with 8 and 9 series cards though.

yeah if you're buying on a credit card forget about it. you've already started the debt-snowball for something that will be obsolete in a few months anyway.

Considering that's UK you live in, I doubt. EVGA GTX 280 SSC has an atrocious price at OCUK. If other stores sell it at the same price, avoid it. Buy a regular GTX 280 made by XFX, ASUS, BFG Tech, Zotac, Palit.....etc and overclock it. This forum is a mine for overclockers/guides/Howto's etc. For 850, I'd suggest you buy two regular GTX 260 cards.

Well, I've thought about the finance and this is the only way I can get a good system.

I earn £800 or $1400 monthly

Insurance - £200 = $400
Rent - £100 = $200
Petrol - £160 = $320
Phone Contract - £35 = $70
**Finance** - £50 = $100

Equals = £545 or $1090

What does everyone think ???? Should I still get system on finance? Thanks, I appreciate the help and feedback here. Plus I already have a good credit history so far, I've been paying for my car insurance since 17 monthly through finance. Thanks again.

I only ever by computer stuff on a credit card or finance if I'm gonna pay it off within a month, otherwise you still are paying for something while it is out of date and superceeded.

That doesn't bother me though, I plan to keep the system for around 5 years. My first ever system I've just shut down for good and I've had that for almost 8 years. Thanks
