Hello i have a problem with my machine i cant make heads or tails of and i have tried a lot of things and the info i have found and been told seem to contradict each other
Its a longer story but i will try and keep it as short as i can
At the start of this year i had a sudden out of the blue shut down no BSOD or warning just dead like the power cord was taken out of the PSU and the system came back a few seconds later
It damaged my 16 TB Ironwolf Pro HDD but since it was new i got a replacement from the shop and got it upgraded to an 18 TB
A few weeks later i had one of my other hard drive start screaming like a banshee out of the blue at random so i thought it was the drive or power cable
Tested all the drives with every test and program i could throw at it and nothing came up no problems with the drives so i threw the SATA power cable out (it was a stock Seasonic cable that came with the PSU) and it stopped the screaming problem so i thought that fixed the problem
Some months went by and i changed or did nothing in the machine and it started to BSOD and crash left right and center at random so i at once i thought RAM and tested it and sure enough they were FUBAR
Sent the G SKill TridentZ Neo 32 GB 3600 MHz CL kit in for RMA and bought a G SKill TridentZ AMD Edition 16 GB 3600 MHz CL 18 kit while the Neo kit was at RMA
So i replaced the RAM but that brought up yet another problem the SSD was full of corrupt files that screwed the OS up so i did a quick format and a re-installed the OS but some of the corrupt files still seem to be there despite the quick format
I need to do a low level format to nuke those corrupt files and i cant do that when i am using the drive
To add further insult the screaming hard drive and random shut off problem came back
At that point i got fed up so i cut the power to all the drives ordered a brand new Seasonic Prime Ultra TX 750 watt a Seagate Firecuda 520 2 TB SSD and an 18 TB Seagate Exos in case one of the hard drives is the cause of the problem
Cutting the power to all 6 hard drives has solved the random shut off problem it has not done it since
So there are 3 things it could be the PSU the SSD or one of the 6 hard drives and i have no clue which one it could be which is why i bought a new PSU SSD and another HDD
My system is a Ryzen 7 3700x with a Noctua NH-D15S 16 GB of 3600 MHz CL 18 RAM a Corsair MP510 1,92 TB NVME SSD an Asus X570 Strix-E and a new Asus Radeon RX 6800 TUF
The PSU is Seasonic Prime TX 750 watt and the 6 hard drives are Seagate Ironwolf Pro drives 1x 12 TB, 1x 14 TB, 1x 16 TB and 3x 18 TB Ironwolf Pro models and all of them pass every test i can throw at them with no errors and problems
I dont recall when i bought each drive but i think the 12 TB is from around mid 2018 the 14 and 16 TB are from July 2019 and two of the 18 TB are from last year from what i recall with the newest one being the one i got as a replacement for the damaged 16 TB and that was in jan of 2022
Seagate offer a 5 year warranty and all of the drives are within the warranty i even talked with both Seagate and Seasonic and Seagate said that they have never heard about a HDD shutting down the system and they said it sounded like the PSU and Seasonic said i should RMA it as it sounds like a PSU problem
Its not temps those are all fine so its not that and the new RAM comes back with zero errors
The SATA power cables i am using right now are CableMod SATA power cables since i threw out the stock Seasonic SATA power cables as i thought they were the problem but the CableMod cables has the same problem and they do it on every single port on the PSU
To me it seems like it could be a problem with the PSU but i still have my fan hub hooked to said SATA power cables and it has not shut down even with that hooked up but on the other hand it uses 12v power only from what i understand?
I think it might be either the 5v rail on the PSU thats FUBAR or maybe its one of the hard drives but i have never in my life heard about a HDD shutting a whole system down but hey there is a first time for everything
Does anyone have any imput on this bizare problem? i dont have a clue on what is going exactly and its getting extremely frustrating
I have spent so many hours on this and i am fed up with spending time on it and just want the damm thing to work again
