i have owned my 360 since may 2006 and have only had problems with nba 2k6 which i dont play anymore it would randomly lockup when playing a game,as for playing dvds i have my tv set to 1080p and all the normal dvds look great, so i wonder if maybe the 360 upscales the video to 1080p? i dont know but it looks pretty good,but i am looking to get the hd dvd add on for christmas along with gears of war

I was going to get the HD DVD player for it as well when I get it, but, since it only outputs video from a Component Video cable, it's only analog, and most TV's only accept 1080P from an HDMI connection (like my 50" Samsung 1080P), so I'm going to get the Xbox 360, and wait until Microsoft has a solution until I get the HD DVD Player add-on.

EDIT:

-I just found out that when playing games on an Xbox 360 with the Component Video HD Cable, the video is 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, and 1080p.
-When playing movies on an Xbox 360 with the Component Video HD cable, it's only 480p.f
-And when playing with Component Video and the HD DVD Add-On, it's capable up to 1080p.

I just read some stuff on IGN that Microsoft might plan to solve the problem, so I'll wait on it.

The 360 plays games in either 1080i or 1080p I can't remember which, and yes it can pay DVDs without the HD-DVD player.

Actually, the 360 only plays in 1080p after you get the massive update that came in late October. Also, though it displays at 1080p, its usually only running 720p textures upscaled to the new resolution, not true 1080p textures (only one 360 game came with 1080p textures, which I believe were just textures used in the PS3 build as well). Of course, the games still look fabulous, especially Gears.

EDIT: The HD-DVD drive does support native 1080p though, just to clarify.

To the original poster, the console you want really rests with what kind of gamer you are. If you enjoy adventure games and older games (nostalgia!) buy the Wii. Its a lot of fun, and I'm having a blast with it. If you're big into online and action, go the 360 route. Both are good consoles, hell, all three are great. I'm really enjoying the PS3, but its hard to recommend for its price tag, but you do get a lot for your dollar, including the ability to download PS1 games to you PSP, which just launched today. It's pretty neat, I've been playing Syphon Filter all evening.

wii = kiddy games...

x360 = mature games...

Just because its a Nintendo console doesn't mean all the games are for kids (like Resident Evil 4 on the Gamecube). Also, Zelda, though its not really violent, is incredibly fun; it is a great game.

The Wii isn't about graphics, its about fun. The controller works fine too, make sure your friend calibrated the sensor bar (its default is set to 'Below T.V.' I believe, and some games, such as Zelda, have a calibrate option). The speed comment about the controller is wrong too. Perhaps your friend has a busted Wii-mote?

Call of Duty 3 isn't a "kiddy" game. And a Radeon Xpress 200m doesn't have the graphics power of a Wii. Don't be ridiculous.

This comment purely shows the lack of maturity to enjoy nonviolent videogames.

Just because you arent blowing someones head off doesn't mean its a kiddy game :rolleyes:

and remember kiddies. Graphics are the only thing that matter in a game, if it doesn't have the bestest graphics ever it ain't worth playing. You should all buy PS3s because, after all, every other system has significantly lower specs so their graphics won't be the bestest. Oh yes, and don't forget the wii and the xbox360 are for the poor kids. You don't want the other children laughing at you because your poor do you? Just charge you parents credit card (Free Money) and get a PS3 because it has the bestest graphics and thus the bestest games.

I'm going to get in trouble for that post... but it's worth it.

Oh no... I made a mistake - I chose a Wii because I wanted fun gameplay at a decent price. I'm such a fool, why didn't you warn me earlier Polaris! :laugh: :laugh:

Yeah, because it is one of the most intense and visceral games released in years. Plus it was an excellent game. How about Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes, Eternal Darkness, Prince of Persia: Two Thrones, and the Metroid Prime (it doesn't have to have blood and be rated M) games?

Oh and Killer 7. That game was seriously messed up.

I think that's because people get way into the games. It just takes flicks of the wrist, people. You don't have to throw like a major league pitcher to play a baseball game.

I also think some of the reports are a tad bit exaggerated.

Theres 3 parts needed to make a successful console.

Good hardware. Xbox360? check. PS3? maybe. Wii? check.

Easy development. Xbox360? check. PS3? not quite. Wii? check.

Good content. Up to the devs.

If the game is too hard to port, there will be much much less reason to port it.

Microsoft has had long time experience with helping developers along the way... *cough* xen *cough*

Ps3 gets linux. w00t! :roll:

You could have the fastest super computer in the world, but without software... ;)
