So we hand a rocket pack to everyone in a wheelchair and now they can set land speed records?

Yes.

Nobody could care less about the "skill" required to overclock except for a very tiny crowd of OC enthusiasts. If a new CPU is easy to overclock and gives excellent performance (both stock and OC'ed) then it is by definition better than the previous one.

After all, i7s are tons easier to OC than Pentium IIIs (which are easier to OC than 486s), and I don't see anyone complaining about the utter lack of skill involved in overclocking i7s.

Tiny doesn't even come close. Negligible is a bit closer to the truth. It might sound harsh, but it is the truth. It is great to have a CPU which can be overclocked to set world records, but in the end what makes Intel their money are large OEMs, not overclockers and not even gamers.

You completely missed the point. My response was intended towards DOM's post. It is clear you have no clue what we were talking about.

Will be waiting for a couple of more years before ditching my 775 + Q9650. Wouldnt improve my games that much from its already good state.

Even whatever AMD shows up with Bulldozer I'll probably still sit on my 1366. i7 970s are new on Ebay hovering around the 500 mark for buy it now. If I need more I can always move to that and was really one of the reasons I jump on the 1366 instead of hold out for the 1156.

For me I noticed going from 775 quad to my i7 even with my C2Q overclocked to 3.4 and the 920 stock clock down to the reference dimm and uncore speeds. GTA IV was the game that made it really obvious. Given how cpu intense the game is I literally doubled my consistent fps from 25-30 to 55. Even in all other games though there was a noticeable increase in average frame rate. Felt like I went from being just quick enough fps wise to keep the games from "feeling laggy" to push me up over that well enough to smooth things out.

I'm gonna skip Sandy Bridge and just try to improve my Core i7 920. At the moment it's as good as stock 2600k and if i bring it to 4GHz it will be even better. So no need for an upgrade. I'll instead invest in graphic card upgrade because those are much more needed than CPU upgrades...

Not for me. I'm happy enough with my set up that my peripherals are now looking like my next upgrade steps, or replace my Noctua P12's with Akasa Apaches...

Keeping my 1366 setup for another year or two I think. I built my current system to last me a long while and I think it will succeed in doing so.

Operate faster clock for clock 95% of the time. That's pretty much the difference between all modern procs. If that's your criteria you might as well go back to a P4. Oh, and also there's the whole higher overclock thing.

That's just it Tatty - They can't really tell you that because there is no evidence that in everyday use you will see a remarkable difference. I see a lot of opinions here from those that don't even have one in hand. ;)

ye ye i know that one of the new chips can do it faster, but i kind of like what i've got at the mo, so i might upgrade the processor and that should do me for a long time ;)

I just don't see a point to upgrade (if you consider it an upgrade) to P67 if you have X58. It's plenty fast enough.

Now when LGA 2011 comes along, I think It will be worth it.

Just my 2 cents. Lol.

i wont be getting 1155. hell im considering going to 1366 and getting a 6core cpu, they are still making x58 boards after all this time, and no longer make P55 boards. to me that says they havent found something to replace 1366 yet, and socket 2011 may not even be the x58 replacement it may just be a server setup. companies wouldnt revamp their X58 lineup if the new replacement was about to launch

The main problem with Sandy Bridge is the lack of compatibility with LGA1156. That one pin complicates the whole thing. If it was LGA1156 compatible, many ppl would switch. But how many will replace almost entire system just because of new CPU?
