Razer Announces the Firefly V2 RGB Mouse Pad

Razer has introduced an updated version of their Firefly RGB mouse pad. First introduced in May 2015, the original Firefly carried 15 RGB lighting zones that could be customized via Razer's Chroma software. There are still 16.8 million colors available for user customization, but the number of lighting zones has been increased from 15 (in the May 2015 model) to 19 (in the November 2019 model). Coincidence? I think not.

The new Firefly V2 now also features brighter LEDs for a more dashing experience, and has been made thinner as well, coming in at just 3 mm (1 mm has been shaved compared to the original model). Like the original version, the Firefly V2 RGB features a micro-textured hard surface, optimized for precise tracking across all mouse sensors, playstyles and sensitivity settings. It also features a built-in cable catch for minimal mouse drag and an anti-slip rubber base to stay firmly in place. The Razer Firefly V2 RGB is now available at various retailers for £49.99 GBP / $49.99 USD / €59.99 MSRP.

Razer Announces Tartarus Pro Keypad with Analog Optical Switches

Razer, the leading global lifestyle brand for gamers, today announced the Razer Tartarus Pro. The newest member of Razer's renowned Tartarus keypad family is the first keypad fitted with analog optical switches designed to provide gamers with superior control in games. The Tartarus Pro is equipped with Razer Analog Optical Switches, enabling the keypad to measure how deep each key is pressed. This allows the Tartarus Pro to emulate analog input similar to controller thumbsticks. Additionally, gamers can adjust the actuation point between 1.5 mm for a faster keystroke, or up to 3.6 mm for a deeper, and more deliberate press.

At the heart of the Razer Analog Optical Switches, an infrared light beam passes through switch stem, while a sensor measures the depth of the switch based on how much light passes through. As such, the switches can register scaling levels of input in the same keystroke. This lets advanced users take advantage of dual-function keys to bind two functions to each key - one that triggers on a partial keystroke, and another on a full keystroke. With dual-function keys, the Razer Tartarus Pro can help ease complex key presses and level up the gaming experience by adapting to the user's playstyle and requirement.

Additionally, the panel sports the lowest available HDR certification in the form of HDR 400, with brightness levels of 420 nits.

Razer is quoting a 95% coverage of the DCI-P3 color gamut on the "edge-to-edge" monitor. The Raptor also features support for Razer's Chroma and a RGB LED on the base of the aluminium stand, which incorporates a built-in CNC cable management solution running through the back. Thermaltake Announce Level 20 RGB Battlestation Gaming Desk for an Extraordinary $1,199

Thermaltake have announced the Level 20 RGB Battlestation Gaming Desk, the ultimate gaming desk for gamers (certainly not) on a budget. The Level 20 includes an RGB lighting strip on the edges of the desk, for when you are feeling that particularly kaleidoscopic fondness, and want to cut on turning on your ceiling's lighting. The desk is electrically adjustable (a feature I've always found slightly underwhelming in the premium/usefulness department), with memory for a total of four different height adjustments - particularly useful if you had Tyrion pass by your house in the intervening time.

The RGB is software controllable (Alexa and Razer Chroma are supported), and the entire surface is adequate for (computer) mice to roll through. Its height can be adjusted between 70 - 110 cm, and the top is a 165 cm x 75 cm affair, which should be more than enough space for everything you're cramming on top of your desk right now. And if you want this piece of kit in your life, rest assured that it only costs $1,199. It's a matter of value, on your mind, as a customer. Just beware the shipping doesn't end up more expensive than the Battlestation itself: this thing weighs 75 Kg inside the packaging.

Microsoft and Razer Collaborating on New Gaming Keyboards and Mice for Xbox

Microsoft has been in and out of the PC gaming peripherals business with its Sidewinder family, and is heavily invested in gaming with the Xbox console and its ecosystem. The company is looking to expand the functionality of the console to bring more PC-like input to the console for certain game genres that cannot be played well with a gamepad or an Xbox controller. RTS games, for example, require rapid, high-precision pointing, and dozens of macros quickly accessible via a keyboard. Microsoft seems to have decided that it's time Xbox has proper keyboard+mouse input, and so it's collaborating with Razer to design new peripherals.

Microsoft already shared the implementation plans of bringing keyboard+mouse input to the Xbox platform, with game developers earlier this year, so they could either retrofit their released titles, or develop future titles with it (and work on ports of popular RTS games that are exclusive to the PC). This includes two new APIs for the console - "Windows.Input.Devices" and "Windows.UI.Core.CoreWindow," which brings a semblance of the UWP to the console. It also proposed new multi-player matchmaking rules to ensure players with keyboards+mice don't get into lobbies with players that have controllers, and end up with an advantage in genres such as FPS. Razer's Xbox peripherals could be both cost-effective keyboards and mice sold separately from each other; or contraptions such as the Razer Turret, which combine a keyboard, mouse, and mousepad into a single, living room-friendly, wireless device that you can put on your lap. Since UWP on the Xbox also paves the way for certain non-gaming apps, one can expect Razer to bring Synapse and Chroma to the platform.

Razer Chroma also enjoys integration with Philips Hue smart lights, giving gamers a full-blown in-room ambience that can be fine-tuned down to each individual light bulb, completely transforming the way they play. Until now, a common experience for many gamers today is that the lighting effects on third-party devices such as PC cases, motherboards, and cooling fans are not fully in sync, producing an experience that is not in line with Razer devices.
